Atkins digital surveys
A client proposition for digital surveys for reality
capture - reducing cost, health and safety risks and
enabling innovative ways of using data
9
Digital surveys in action: Thames Water
Showcasing our proficiency in UAV surveying by mapping
a quarry in Leighton Buzzard.
We employed UAVs to aerially survey ten water treatment
sites over ten days for our client, Thames Water.
The same surveys would have taken two months
using ground-based survey techniques.
ASSIST
ASSIST is an Atkins developed intelligent digital solution,
designed to increase the speed, quality and efficiency of site
inspections through the use of an automated mobile device,
delivering:
• Reduced cost and resource requirements
• An accelerated inspection process
• Faster revenue generation for developments
• Better governance and process.

ASSIST in action: United States State Departments of
Transportation (DoT)
We launched the Atkins ASSIST product on a construction
management project for a state DoT, delivering immediate efficiencies
in the field. The client is already recognising value added capabilities
of the data analytics and is interested in licensing the product from
Atkins to use across other projects with other consultants and
contractors.
Digital Engineering Vision
We’ve created a showcase of Atkins’
most innovative examples of digital
engineering and have been sharing
our vision of what engineering will be
like in 2020 with our clients.
11
We crowdsourced lots of opinions,
thoughts and surfaced examples
from across Atkins on how digital
technology is shaping the future of
engineering.

The market
Over $100 trillion investment needed to bring existing infrastructure
to a ‘state of good repair’ in developed world (OECD study)
McKinsey study identifies $3.2 trillion/year to sustain current service
levels and meet future demand (~ 3.5% of GDP); excluding recovery
of backlog
Estimated UK spend on economic infrastructure per annum is: £30bn
on new-build, £30bn renewal and £40bn maintenance
The market for in-service maintenance and facilities management in
the UK is estimated to be around £80 bn p.a.
There is a £4.5bn per annum global addressable
consulting/solutions/services market for asset management.
15
What is coming
• Remote surveying/condition monitoring – use of drones,
satellite, laser scanning and point cloud asset visualisation
• Automation of processes, optimisation of Field Management
Services (FMS) and building new digital capabilities –
operational efficiencies from automation of normal business
decision leading to smarter decisions.
• Remote sensors/self healing – Internet of Things (IoT), cloud,
big data lakes
• Big data and advanced predictive analytics – optimising
lifecycle cost, reducing risk, improving performance and predicting
failure / maintenance

Atkins is part of the VENTURER consortium, which is trialling
autonomous vehicles in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire
council areas to explore the feasibility of driverless cars in the UK.
• First CAV project to start in the UK
• Funded by Innovate UK
• £5 million research project
• Working in partnership with local universities
• Atkins leading consortium of 13 companies.

Connected Autonomous Vehicles will
transform the way we use our existing
networks allowing us to re-imagine
future infrastructure
• DfT commission to look at the impact of
CAVs on London’s roads
• We developed a new transport model with
control algorithms to represent
communication between driver controlled
and driverless cars
• Visualisation used extensively to allow
people to see what will happen
• Our work will be presented at the European
Transport Conference 2016
• Already looking at similar work in the US
and UAE.

mobility needs, improving
quality of life
Flourish objectives:
• Mobile roaming data now used to accurately monitor
journey times around the M25
• First use of data in this way in the UK
• £ms of savings in capex and opex spend as data
replaces the need for roadside infrastructure
• Programmes being developed to look at how real-time
data can be used to actively manage the network and
plan for future investment.

Intelligent Mobility in ActionSmart motorways to smarter motorways
• A smart motorway uses technology to actively manage the flow of traffic
• Smart motorways increase the capacity of the road, without the expense and hassle of
widening the road, by either temporarily or permanently opening the hard shoulder to
traffic
• Atkins are pioneers in this area:
• M62 – first smart motorway scheme to open
• M25 – first sections of permanent all lane running
• M4/M5 & M6 completed or in delivery phase
• Highways England partner on schemes throughout the programme
• £ms saved in terms of capital and operational expenditure
• Now building on this experience and credibility to look at the next evolution to the
Smarter Motorway.
RoadX is Colorado’s bold commitment to its customers
to be a national leader in using innovative technology to
improve its transportation system. Forecast to invest
$20m a year for the next three years.
• RoadX is a programme set-up Colorado DoT that seeks to transform its transportation system into
one of the safest and most reliable in the nation by harnessing emerging technology
• This will be created by establishing public and private sector partnerships
• Atkins has been appointed to the RoadX $5m framework and secured a role to project manage the
programme.
