LAN: Network HUB
• Hub is a device for connecting multiple twisted pair or fiber optic Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single segment.
• Hubs do not manage any of the traffic that comes through them.
• Hubs work at the physical layer (layer 1) of the OSI model
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 64
LAN: Network Switch
• Nearly identical to network hubs.• A switch generally contains more
"intelligence" than a network hub.• Network switches are capable of
– inspecting data packets as they are received, – determining the source and destination device
of that packet, – and forwarding it appropriately
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 65
Ethernet LAN
• Frame-based computer networking technologies that operates at many speeds for local area networks (LANs)
• Based on computers communicating over a shared coaxial cable
• Acting as a broadcast transmission medium. • The methods used show some similarities to
radio systems, although there are major differences, such as the fact that it is much easier to detect collisions in a cable broadcast.
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 66
Ethernet LAN• How to deal with multiple users??• Carrier sense multiple access with collision detection
(CSMA/CD)• Main procedure
– Frame ready for transmission?– Is medium idle? If not, wait until it becomes ready– Start transmitting – Does a collision occur? If so, go to collision detected procedure. – End successful transmission
• Collision detected procedure– Continue transmission– Is maximum number of transmission attempts reached? If so, abort
transmission– Calculate and wait random back-off period – Re-enter main procedure at stage 1

Identity Theft
• What is Identity Theft?– Identity theft occurs when someone uses your
personal information without your permission – To take over your existing accounts or to
open new accounts. – Identity theft can result in damage to your
credit rating and denials of credit.
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 93
Identity Theft• Identity theft commonly begins with the
loss or theft of a wallet or purse. • But there are many other ways that
criminals can obtain and use your personal information– "dumpster-diving" (stealing records from your
trash)– “phishing” (sending fraudulent e-mails
requesting your personal information)
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 94
Identity Theft• To minimize the risk and help protect your
privacy and identity, you should:– Shred documents containing your personal information before
discarding them.– Secure your personal information at home and at work. – Before disclosing any personal information, make sure you know
why it is required and how it will be used.– Obtain your credit report to see your credit history.– Use caution when responding to e-mails requesting personal
information. – When in doubt, contact the sender of the request through a
known, secure channel (phone number on back of credit card or a known website address).

DICOM - History• Developed by the National Electrical Manufacturers
Association (NEMA) in conjunction with the American College of Radiology (ACR).
• Its goal in developing a standard was– To enable users to retrieve images and associated information
from digital imaging equipment in a standard format using point-to-point connection.
– To hide differences same across multiple image equipment manufacturers.
• To handle developing network and image standards, a new standard, DICOM, was proposed in 1981.
• The first version was ACR-NEMA, released in 1985.
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 98
What is DICOM?
• Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine
• A standard in the field of medical informatics
• Used for exchanging digital information between medical imaging equipment (such as radiological imaging) and other systems
• Ensuring interoperability
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 99
DICOM Standard• The standard specifies:
– a set of protocols for devices communicating over a network. DICOM uses TCP/IP as transport protocol
– the syntax and semantics of commands and associated information that can be exchanged using these protocols
– a set of media storage services and devices claiming conformance to the standard
– a file format and a medical directory structure to facilitate access to the images and related information stored on media that share information

Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 105
Issues in DICOM Use• Network issues:
– There must be a functioning network between your two systems, and any security firewalls between them must be configured to allow passage of information between these sites.
• Communication issues: – The first step in sending a DICOM image is for the software to
establish a connection between the two machines, where they negotiate the details of the image transmission (e.g., byte modevs word mode, little-endian vs. big endian, etc).
• Component issues: – DICOM is specified in terms of many individual components (SOP
Classes). – If you happen to have two systems that only
know how to send DICOM images, but neither knows how to receive and store DICOM images, then these devices will have trouble working together.
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 106
DICOM services• DICOM services include:• Verification: Check to see if another system is on-line and
available • Storage: Ability to accept images for storage.• Query/retrieve: Ability to inquire as to existence of a study (or
types of studies based on transmitted specifications), and retrieve those studies from the remote system. – This might be used for moving data from a remote system to a local
one, or to pull data from an archiving node.• Print management: Ability to print an image, including
maintaining a print queue.• Modality Worklist: Ability to query the local radiology information
system (RIS) for a list of patients to be done that day, and use that information to automatically fill in fields in the image study header on the acquisition system. – This will make sure that names, birth-dates,
and other patient identifiers are consistent throughout the system (especially needed if images are to be forwarded to a PACS archive).

Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 147
RAID• RAID combines
– multiple physical hard disks into a single logical unit either
– using special hardware or software• There are 3 key concepts in RAID:
– Mirroring: the copying of data to more than one disk– Striping: the splitting of data across more than one
disk– Error correction: where redundant data is stored to
allow problems to be detected and possibly fixed (known as Fault tolerance)
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 148
RAID levels
• There is 5 levels of RAID– RAID 0: Striped– RAID 1: Mirrored – RAID 3 and RAID 4: Striped Set (3 disk
minimum) with Dedicated Parity– RAID 5: Striped Set (3 disk minimum) with
Distributed Parity– RAID 0+1 Striped with Mirror
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 149
RAID 0
RAID Level 0 requires a minimum of 2 drives to implement
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 150
RAID 0• Advantages
– RAID 0 implements a striped disk array, the data is broken down into blocks and each block is written to a separate disk drive
– I/O performance is greatly improved by spreading the I/O load across many channels and drives
– Best performance is achieved when data is striped across multiple controllers with only one drive per controller
– No parity calculation overhead is involved– Very simple design– Easy to implement
26
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 151
RAID 0• Disadvantages
– Not a "True" RAID because it is NOT fault-tolerant– The failure of just one drive will result in all data in an
array being lost– Should never be used in mission critical environments
• Recommend Use– Video Production and Editing– Image Editing– Pre-Press Applications– Any application requiring high bandwidth
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 152
RAID 1
RAID Level 1 requires a minimum of 2 drives to implement
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 153
RAID 1
• Advantages– 100% redundancy of data means no rebuild is
necessary in case of a disk failure, just a copy to the replacement disk
– Transfer rate per block is equal to that of a single disk
– Under certain circumstances, RAID 1 can sustain multiple simultaneous drive failures
– Simplest RAID storage subsystem design
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 154
RAID 1• Disadvantages
– Highest disk overhead of all RAID types (100%) –inefficient
– Typically the RAID function is done by system software, loading the CPU/Server and possibly degrading throughput at high activity levels.
– Hardware implementation is strongly recommended• Recommend Use
– Accounting– Payroll– Financial– Any application requiring very high availability
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 155
RAID 3 & 4
•The data block is subdivided ("striped") and written on the data disks. Stripe parity is generated on Writes, recorded on the parity disk and checked on Reads.
•RAID Level 3 requires a minimum of 3 drives to implement
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 156
RAID 3 & 4
•Each entire block is written onto a data disk. Parity for same rank blocks is generated on Writes, recorded on the parity disk and checked on Reads.
•RAID Level 4 requires a minimum of 3 drives to implement
27
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 157
RAID 3 & 4
• Advantages– Very high Read data transfer rate– Very high Write data transfer rate– Disk failure has an insignificant impact on
throughput– Low ratio of ECC (Parity) disks to data disks
means high efficiency
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 158
RAID 3 & 4• Disadvantages
– Transaction rate equal to that of a single disk drive at best (if spindles are synchronized)
– Controller design is complex– Very difficult and resource intensive to do as a
"software" RAID• Recommend Use
– Video Production and live streaming– Image Editing– Video Editing– Prepress Applications– Any application requiring high throughput
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 159
RAID 5
•Each entire data block is written on a data disk; parity for blocks in the same rank is generated on Writes, recorded in a distributed location and checked on Reads.
•RAID Level 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives to implement
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 160
RAID 5
• Advantages– Highest Read data transaction rate– Medium Write data transaction rate– Low ratio of ECC (Parity) disks to data disks
means high efficiency– Good aggregate transfer rate
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 161
RAID 5• Disadvantages
– Disk failure has a medium impact on throughput– Most complex controller design– Difficult to rebuild in the event of a disk failure (as
compared to RAID level 1)– Individual block data transfer rate same as single disk
• Recommend Use– File and Application servers– Database servers– Web, E-mail, and News servers– Intranet servers– Most versatile RAID level
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 162
RAID 0 +1
RAID Level 0+1 requires a minimum of 4 drives to implement
28
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 163
RAID 0 +1
• Advantages– RAID 0+1 is implemented as a mirrored array
whose segments are RAID 0 arrays– RAID 0+1 has the same fault tolerance as
RAID level 5– High I/O rates are achieved (multiple stripe
segments)– Excellent solution for sites that need high
performance but are not concerned with achieving maximum reliability
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 164
RAID 0 +1
• Disadvantages– A single drive failure will cause the whole array to
become, in essence, a RAID Level 0 array– Very expensive / High overhead– All drives must move in parallel to proper track
lowering sustained performance– Very limited scalability at a very high inherent cost
• Recommend Use– Imaging applications– General fileserver
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 165
Storage media
• The data has to be stored on some data storage medium somewhere.– Magnetic tape – Hard disk– Optical disc– Floppy disk– Solid state storage– Remote backup service
Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backup
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 166
Magnetic tape• Magnetic tape has long been the most commonly used
medium for bulk data storage, backup, archiving, and interchange in certain markets like mainframes .
• Tape has better capacity/price ratio when compared to hard disk, but recently the ratios for tape and hard disk have become a lot closer.
• Tape is a sequential access medium, so even though access times may be poor, the rate of continuously writing or reading data can actually be very fast.
• Some new tape drives are even faster than modern hard disks.
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 167
Hard disk• The capacity/price ratio of hard disk has been
rapidly improving for many years. • This is making it more competitive with
magnetic tape as a bulk storage medium. • The main advantages of hard disk storage are
low access times, availability, capacity and ease of use.
• External disks can be connected via local interfaces like SCSI, USB or FireWire, or via longer distance technologies like Ethernet, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel.
Digital Image Distribution and Network Yudthaphon Vichianin Ph.D. 168
29

Optical disc• A recordable CD can be used as a backup device. • One advantage of CDs is that they can hold 650 MB of
data on a 12 cm (4.75") reflective optical disc. • Another common format is recordable DVD. Many optical
disk formats are WORM type (Write-One-Read-Many)• Other rewritable formats can also be utilized such as
CDRW or DVD-RAM. • The newer HD-DVD's and BluRay Disks dramatically
increase the amount of data possible on a single optical storage disk.

Holographic Memory
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/holographic-memory.htm
•Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc technology still in the research stage which would hold up to 3.9 terabytes (TB) of information. •It employs a technique known as collinear holography, whereby two lasers, one redand one blue-green, are collimated in a single beam to encode and retrieve information.

Floppy disk
• During the 1980s and early 1990s, many personal/home computer users associated backup mostly with copying floppy disks.
• The low data capacity of a floppy disk makes it an unpopular and obsolete choice today.

Solid state storage
• Also known as flash memory, thumb drives, USB flash drives, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Secure Digital cards, etc.
• These devices are relatively costly for their low capacity, but offer excellent portability and ease-of-use.

Remote backup service
• As broadband internet access becomes more widespread, remote backup services are gaining in popularity.
• Backing up via the internet to a remote location can protect against some worse case scenarios, such as fire, flood or earthquake, destroying any backups along with everything else.

Data repository models• Unstructured: may simply be a stack of floppy disks or CD-R media with
minimal information about what was backed up and when. – This is the easiest to implement, but probably the least likely to achieve a high
level of recoverability.• Full + Incremental: aims to make storing several copies of the
source data more feasible. – At first, a full backup (of all files) is taken. – After that an incremental backup (of only the files that have changed
since the previous full or incremental backup) can be taken. – Restoring whole systems to a certain point in time would
• require locating the full backup taken previous to that time • and all the incremental backups taken between that full backup and the
particular point in time to which the system is supposed to be restored. – This model offers a high level of security that something can be
restored and can be used with removable media such as tapes and optical disks.
– The downside is dealing with a long series of incrementals and the high storage requirements.

Data repository models
• Continuous data protection: This model takes it a step further – instead of scheduling periodic backups, the system
immediately logs every change on the host system. – This is generally done by saving byte or block-level
differences rather than file-level differences.– It differs from simple disk mirroring
in that it enables a roll-back of the log and thus restore of old image of data.

Managing the data repository• On-line backup storage
– Typically the most accessible type of data storage, which can begin restore in miliseconds time.
– A good example would be an internal hard disk or a disk array (RIAD)
– This type of storage is very convenient and fast, but is relatively expensive.

Managing the data repository• Near-line storage
– Typically less accessible and less expensive than on-line storage, but still useful for backup data storage.
– A good example would be a tape library with restore times ranging from seconds to a few minutes.
– A mechanical device involved in moving media units from storage into a drive where the data can be read or written.

Managing the data repository
• Off-line – Similar to near-line, except it requires human
interaction to make storage media available. – This can be as simple as storing backup tapes
in a file cabinet. Media access time is more than an hour.

Managing the data repository• Off-site vault
– To protect against a disaster or other site-specific problem, many people choose to send backup media to an off-site vault.
– The vault can be • as simple as the System Administrator’s home
office • or as sophisticated as a disaster hardened,
temperature controlled, high security bunker.

Managing the data repository• Backup site, Disaster Recovery Center (DR Center)
– In the event of a disaster, the data on backup media will not be sufficient to recover. Computer systems onto which the data can be restored and properly configured networks are necessary too.
– Some organizations have their own data recovery centers that are equipped for this scenario.
– Other organizations contract this out to a third-party recovery center.
– Note that because DR site is itself a huge investment, backup is very rarely considered preferred method of moving data to DR site.
– More typical way would be remote disk mirroring, which keeps the DR data as up-to-date as possible.
