Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster GraphicsRaster graphics are made up of bitmaps graphics which are made up of pixels. Each pixel records a specific colour of an image which is often used in Photoshop.
Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector GraphicsVector graphics are made up of vectors (also known as paths or strokes). Vector graphics are defined by a start to finish point, with curves, points and angles between them. This graphics can be used to make anything, and will not become distorted when resized.
Raster Graphics
JPEGStands For Joint Photographics Experts Group
Used For/Example This is mainly used as the name for images found over the internet, or found on social media sites
Advantage The advantages of a JPEG is that they are often small and don’t require a lot of memory to be saved and uploaded
Disadvantage Resizing a JPEG makes it pixelated and therefor much harder to see, and the image will lose quality over time if it’s recompressed
TIFFStands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example This is mainly used for creating magazine covers, which need more than one image at a time
Advantage TIFF formats don’t lose and data when being compressed, so the quality of the image stays the same way, no matter the size
Disadvantage TIFFs aren’t used that much, which makes finding them very difficult, they also are quite large and will require a lot of memory to be saved
GIFStands For Graphic Interchange Format
Used For/Example This is mainly used for creating moving images by using a series of images, moving in a loop
Advantage A GIF is a great way to show more than one image at once. They can also be used to show a short frame.
Disadvantage They may be blocked or pixelated due to the limited colours and they are also very difficult to make minor adjustments to the animation when it’s already been saved
BMPStands For Bitmap image file
Used For/Example Pictures that are similar to jpegs or tiffs and can be saved as pixel-based images
Advantage It can capture 14 megapixels at a time and doesn’t lose quality when saved from being compressed
Disadvantage It has a large size, which can make exporting it difficult as well as resizing and will take a lot of memory to save
Vector Graphics
PSDStands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Can be used to merge different images together to make 1 image which can be converted into a JPEG.
Advantage PSD’s can be saved without needing a background, they are also quite easy to go back to and edit later on.
Disadvantage They can take up a lot of memory to be saved and can only be opened up in certain programmes.
AIStands For Adobe Illustrator Art
Used For/Example This is most used for creating graphics, such as company logos.
Advantage The advantages of using Illustrator is that when scaling an image, it doesn’t lose any quality, and also prints at higher quality too.
Disadvantage It has limits to what programmes it can be viewed in.
FLAStands For Flash File
Used For/Example Most used for creating animations and games.
Advantage The files are saved at high qualities and have small file sizes, which makes them good for uploading online and don’t take a long time to load.
Disadvantage Not all computers have the latest flash which means they might not be able to watch it in high quality,
WMFStands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example These are mainly uses for logos as they lose no definition when being scaled
Advantage WMFs can be great for creating company logos because they don’t lose any of their definition when being scaled up or down. They also can be arranged fairly easily which makes them easy to create
Disadvantage Can be tricky to execute or will lose resolution when resized
File Format Capture and Optimising
CompressionDefinition Lossy compression is the way in which files sizes
are reduced by reducing the amount of information that is saved. Images become more pixelated as they are compressed as they save smaller amounts of coloured squares each time
Advantage Uses less disk space to save the work, and can be written and read faster
Disadvantage Less pixels are saved each time.
Image CaptureMethod Scanner
How is it used for image capture of graphics
You can digitalise physical objects into images, like sketches or physical photos
Method CameraHow is it used for image capture of
graphicsThe camera takes a picture of whatever the user wants
Method Graphics TabletHow is it used for image capture of
graphicsA graphic tablet allows the user to draw a picture on the computer itself
OptimisingWhy would you optimise? So that if an image is placed on the
internet, it can easily be viewed
How can you optimise? You can optimise an image by placing it in Photoshop and changing the “image size”
Advantage to optimising Can be seen at the best possible quality
Disadvantage to optimising Can effect the quality of the image
Storage
File SizeWhat could affect a Working Scale (Photoshop) document file size?
The amount of content in the document
How could you reduce the file size of a Working Scale document without
affecting quality?
Merge different layers together
What is an advantage of scaling up images before exporting?
Can see it at a higher quality
What is a disadvantage of scaling up images before exporting?
Will take longer to open and save
File Naming ConventionsWhat naming conventions could you use when creating your video game assets?
Put them into a category, then give them a specific name
Why is it a good idea to accurately name your assets?
So that you can keep track of every asset you have and can find the one that you’re looking for
Asset ManagementWhy would you use folders when storing
your assets? So that you can easily find the asset that you’re looking for
What folders would you create and what would you save within them
