>>> TODAY’S STORYLINES >>>

• LAST TIME OUT FOR CUW: The Falcons offense struggled past the opening quarter during a 48-21 defeat at the hands of Lakeland, who retained the Cheese Bowl trophy for the second-straight year. CUW apeared to be off to the races with an 87-yard rushing touchdown followed by a 76-yard kickoff return to the end zone within the first 11 minutes of play. The Falcons amassed 303 total offensive yards, but gave up 606 total offensive yards to the Muskies. CUW also struggled on third-down, converting just 4-of-14 attempts. Quarterback Aaron Nixon threw for 187 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions and was sacked four times. Running back Andrew Gatz had his second-consecutive 100-yard rushing performance with 118 rushing yards and a touchdown. Punter Jacob Mason kicked five times and aver-aged 43.0 yard per punt, with one placed inside the 20-yard line. Defensively, cornerback Aaron Krapfl had 13 total tackles (nine solo) and cornerback Albert Goerlitz broke up three passes.• LAST TIME OUT FOR OLIVET: The Comets lost for the first time this season, with a 49-21 setback to Albion, who also entered the game with an undefeated record. Albion’s offense accumulated 629 total offensive yards, including 256 on the ground and had scoring drive of five plays or fewer three times. Oliv-et found itself down 42-13 at one point in the fourth quarter and struggled on third-down, converting just 5-of-16 attemtps. Quarterback Braden Black passed for 145 yards and a touchdown, while running back Damorria Lilly had 130 rushing yards on 23 carries (5.7 average) and a score. Wide receiver Kornelius Saxton hauled in six passes for 71 yards. Defensively, six players had six total tackles and Olivet didn’t record a sack.• KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR CUW: Kicker/Punter Jacob Mason has elevated his performances the past three games. The rookie has punted 19 times for 857 yards (45.1 average). He has pinned the oppo-sition inside the 20-yard line three times and boomed punts over 50 yards four times. As well, Mason has kicked off 13 times in the past three outings for 730 yards (56.1 average) and a touchback. He ranks 15th nationally in punting average, as well as leading the NACC in punting average and longest punt. Mason’s kicking abilities have changed the field position for opponents dramatically at times this season. • KEY PLAYER TO WATCH FOR OLIVET: The running back corps for the Comets, as they have five players with over 300 rushing yards this season. The group has accounted for 376 of the team’s 414 carries and 26 touchdowns on the ground. This season Olivet has rushed for over 200 yards in six games, including over 300 yards in two games.• MATCHUP TO WATCH: Olivet’s rushing attack versus CUW’s run defense. The Comets have the 20th best rushing offense in the country (252.9 yards per game), while the Falcons rank 169th nationally giving up 185.0 rushing yards per game. CUW has allowed just one opponent under 100 rushing yards this season.• WHAT IS AT STAKE: CUW can earn its only non-conference win of the season and gain momentum heading into the season finale. Olivet is playing for its eighth win of the season, which would tie its pro-gram record for victories accomplished last in 2004.

KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER• This is the first meeting between CUW and Olivet dating back to 1884. While these two teams haven’t played each other, their respective leagues (NACC, MIAA) have competed in a Challenge Series for the past four years.• The Falcons are in the middle of a three-game homestand to close the regular season. It is the second season in a row they will have three home games in a row. CUW has compiled a 21-17 record at home during head coach Greg Etter’s seven-plus seasons.

NUMBERS TO KNOW• 87: Andrew Gatz’s 87-yard touchdown run on the opening possession of last Saturday’s game broke the team’s record for longest run. He ended with 118 rushing yards for his second-straight 100-yard rushing game of the season.• 20: Youth has served the Falcons this season, with 20 underclassmen playing in at least six games. Of those players, six have started at least six games. Moreso, three of the starting five offensive lineman and the starting quarterback are of sophomore status.• 16-39: CUW has scored 16 touchdowns in the red zone, while Olivet has tallied 39 touchdowns in the red zone this season.

West Bend -- Rick Riehl lives mostly in the past now, and that’s a blessing because it means he is fo-cused on the things that have been such an import-ant part of his life. Once a coach, always a coach. And so, in conversation that starts and stops and trails off, he talks about games won and lost, confus-ing facts and dates and sports but still in touch with the joy and occasional heartache they produced. “I was the first one to die when we lost and I knew our players were better,” he says. “But also I was the first one to tear-pop when we were better than we should have been, when we won more than we should have.” His smile lights up the room. “His mind is in a happy place,” says his wife, Donna. “You can tell. And I’m thankful for that.” Riehl, a retired teacher and former coach at West Bend East High School and a pillar of the community, has been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, an extremely rare, degenerative and invariably fatal brain disorder. There are about 300 cases annually in the United States. CJD is especially cruel because of the speed with which it incapacitates. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the disease typically appears later in life and runs a rapid course. There is no cure, and about 90% of those af-flicted die within a year. Riehl, 66, is sitting at the kitchen table, the day’s mail in front of him — another dozen cards from former students and players to add to an ever-grow-ing stack. Friends and neighbors stop in regularly, or drop off meals. More than 370 people have com-mented on an Oct. 26 Facebook post, an outpouring of love for Riehl and his family that touches the heart. “Holy cow,” Riehl says. “I don’t remember being that nice a guy.” A lot of people would beg to differ. Riehl taught English for 32 years, all at East. He coached a variety of sports but was known mainly for his outstanding record in girls basketball. His teams won almost exactly twice as many games as they lost (334-169). Along the way, East won five conference ti-tles, 10 regional titles and the 1984 WIAA state cham-pionship. He also ran summer basketball camps for more than three decades. Quick with a smile, a word of encouragement or a pat on the back, Riehl touched countless lives. From a Facebook post: “If you didn’t work with him, or weren’t actually a student in his classes or on a team he coached, you wished you were! His bright smile is still infectious! Many prayers from a legion of people who care for this man and his family.” “The feeling I got was that if you went to East or played sports, at some point he entered your life,”

says Nicholas Dettmann, sports editor of the West Bend Daily News. “There’s not a whole lot of people who can say they had an impact on an entire city like he has.” In his second career, Riehl was Concordia Uni-versity Wisconsin’s Sports Information Director for 12 years and then worked in administration for two more. On Saturday, CUW will dedicate the football press box at Tomasini Field in his name. Riehl is asked about the honor, but the question doesn’t register. In his mind, he is on the basketball court, a whistle in his mouth, coaxing and pushing his girls. “We’re going to do what we’re going to do and be successful at all levels,” he says. “His whole mentality now is coaching sports,” says Donna, Rick’s college sweetheart at UW-Green Bay. “That’s where he’s at. Even in the middle of the night he’s talking about coaching situations. And that’s what he was all about, so I guess that’s OK.” The symptoms first surfaced in the summer. The Riehls were in a bocce league and Donna noticed that her husband seemed a bit uncoordinated. Then he started having problems with his balance and his memory. “We were on vacation the first week of October and the symptoms came on very rapidly,” she said. “After we came home he had the MRI done and then things went rapidly downhill.” The Riehls’ adult children — Tyler, Tara and Troy — will be at Concordia on Saturday, wearing beanies embroidered with the words “Make it Riehl.” “They have stepped up to the plate to help out where they can, using each of their talents,” Donna says. “We’re thankful each day for what we have. Ob-viously, they’re devastated, but we’re making life as beautiful as we can.” Creutzfeldt-Jakob is relentless. As the disease pro-gresses, mental impairment becomes severe. Riehl does not have much time left, but he and Donna and the people who love them are making the most of it. “Rick is positive,” she says, smiling through her tears. “He knows that no matter what the outcome is, it’s going to be good for all of us. We’re all going to be in a good place.”
