Dear EMTA meeting participant,

It is my great honor and privilege to warmly welcome you to the EMTA General Meeting in Helsinki on 31 May – 2 June 2017!

Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) is a joint local authority whose member municipalities are Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi and Sipoo. Nearly 360 million journeys are made on HSL’s transport services annually; this accounts for 63% of all public transport journeys in Finland. Our annual operating income is about 674 million euros, of which ticket revenue accounts for some 344 million euros, and we have about 360 employees.

HSL plans and organizes public transport in the region and works to improve its operating conditions. In addition, we procure bus, tram, Metro, ferry and commuter train services, are responsible for the preparation of the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan, approve the public transport fare and ticketing system and ticket prices, organize ticket sales, and are responsible for ticket inspections as well as public transport marketing and passenger informa-tion.

HSL is an innovative and forward-looking organization with a highly motivated staff. With our customer-focused activities and new organization, we aim to deliver a good passenger experience.

HSL is a pioneer in digitalization and plays a leading role in several major deve-lopment projects. Our new Ticketing and Information System will improve public transport services in the coming years, a new Journey Planner designed using open data and open source code allows anyone to utilize public transport data freely, while the Digital Dialogue project provides a new digital channel (instant feedback system) between passengers, operators and HSL, allowing us to coop-erate to improve the quality of public transport services.

HSL and the City of Helsinki participate in a global initiative for intelligent trans-port, launched by Bloomberg Philantrophies, in which ten major global cities prepare for the emergence of autonomous vehicles. The aim is to use intelligent transport to solve social challenges and improve the lives of urban dwellers. How will self-driving buses be integrated into the public transport system? This question is interesting to all of us.

We promise that in addition to a highly interesting program, the Helsinki EMTA meeting will include dialogue, as well as enabling you to experience our gorgeous seaside capital.

The museum depicts Marshal Mannerheim's home as it was in the early 1940s, with the rooms furnished in the original way with the exception of three exhibition rooms on the first floor. Guided tours are available in six languages (Finnish, Swedish, English, Russian, French and German), providing a great deal of information on Manner-heim's life and the history of Finland in general.

Katajanokan KasinoThis traditional restaurant was opened in 1913 and entirely renovated in 1996. Traditions are also upheld by the restaurant's high quality kitchen. The seaside location and pacious terrace make Katajanokan Kasino a real jewel of summer Helsinki!

Hotel ScandicGrand MarinaThis comfortable and refurbished hotel is located by the sea in the idyllic Katajanokka district, right next to the Market Square and Helsinki city centre.

Suomenlinna Sea FortressIn 1991, the Suomenlinna fortress was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique monument of military architecture. Another special feature of the fortress is that in the course of its history it has served in the defence of three realms: Sweden, Russia and Finland.

Hotel KatajanokkaThe oldest part of Hotel Katajanokka dates back to 1837 and the main part to 1888. The building originally served as a county prison and pre-trial detention centre. The prison was closed in 2002. Following extensive restoration work, a high-quality modern hotel opened its doors in May 2007.

City HallThe Helsinki City Hall was designed by C.L. Engel as a hotel in 1833 and the building has been the City Hall since the 1930s. The Helsinki coat-of-arms can be seen on the tympanum. With the exception of the facade, the building was completely rebuilt in 1967-1970 designed by the architect Aarno Ruusuvuori. In the lobby you'll find “Virka-info” which is the Helsinki City information center for residents and immigrants as well as a gallery, Virka-gallery open to public.

What does HSL do?

It is also the finance and business center of the country. Toget-her with its neighboring cities, Helsinki forms the metropolitan area with more than one million inhabitants.

Helsinki’s identity has been formed by cultural influences from both the East and West. Over 450 years of his-tory, several architectural layers and the impact of different periods can clearly be seen in the city. The beauty of the surrounding nature blends seamlessly together with high-tech achievements and design, while old traditions mix with the latest contem-porary trends.

Airport

Helsinki Airport (IATA code: HEL), also known as Helsinki - Vantaa Airport, is located in the city of Vantaa, 17 km north of Helsinki. It is the main airport in Finland.How to get between the airport and the city center:

By train

Commuter trains I and P operate between Helsinki Airport and the city center on the Ring Rail Line. The journey time between the airport and Helsinki city center (Central Railway Station) is approximately 30 minutes. A regional ticket costs €5.50 and can be purchased from Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) ticket machines and onboard trains from a ticket sales car-riage until 19th June.

By bus

Bus 615 (“Lentoasema-Rautatientori”) runs between the airport and Helsinki city center. A regional ticket costs €5.50 and can be purchased from HSL ticket machines or from the driver with cash. At night, you can also take the 415N night bus. By taxi

You can also travel conveniently between the airport and the city center by taxi, which will cost around 45 euros.

Public transport

Helsinki has a well working, safe public transport system managed by Helsinki Region Transport HSL and consisting of bus, tram, metro, commuter train and ferry services.

Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square

Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings de-signed by Carl Ludwig Engel: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland.

Market Square

Helsinki’s iconic harbourfront market sells traditional and seasonal foods, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs.

Uspenski Cathedral

Completed in 1868 in the Katajanokka district of Helsinki, Uspenski is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe. The redbrick edifice combines Eastern and Western influences: the facade represents classic Slavic tradi-tions, while the interior reflects both Byzantine traditions and the influence of Italian art.

Temppeliaukio Church

Quarried out of the natural bedrock it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Helsinki, as well as a popular venue for concerts.

Ateneum Art Museum

Ateneum is the most popular museum in Finland. The collections include Finnish art from the 1750s to the 1960s and western art from the latter half of 1800s to the 1950s, including many national treasures.

Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma

Opened in 1998, Kiasma presents three major new exhibitions a year alongside numerous smaller projects. The intriguing building was designed by Steven Holl and uses natural light that filters in through the glass sur-face.

Kamppi Chapel

A fine example of Finnish wooden architecture, this futuristic chapel is a place for quiet meditation amidst the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

National Museum of Finland

The museum’s main exhibitions pre-sent Finnish life from prehistoric times to the present.

Archipelago

Helsinki is a city by the sea with a long shoreline and 315 islands. From the Market Square you can catch a ferry to Suomenlinna or one of the many nearby islands that are open to the public for recreational use. On several of the islands there are beauti-ful restaurants.

Suomenlinna

Suomenlinna is a sea fortress that was built of the coast of Helsinki in 1748. Suomenlinna was shaped by the distinct historic eras when helped defend first Sweden, then Russia and ultimately Finland. In 1991, Suomen-linna was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to be preserved for future generations as an example of the European military architecture of its time.

HSL provides a day ticket valid from 29 May June 4 to EMTA participants.

The ticket is easy to use: when boarding a vehicle or before entering the Metro or Suomenlinna ferry platform area, you only need to show the card to the card reader without pressing any of the card reader buttons.New Old

This spring, HSL piloted a new instant feedback system on ten buses in coop-eration with two bus operators, Åbergin linja OY and Tammelundin Liikenne OY. During the pilot, passengers were able to give real-time feedback with their smartphones with the help of stickers (NFC, QR code and Url) on buses.

The pilot proved a success. Passengers were eager to use the new system and the technology chosen proved workable.

Over 60% of all feedback given was positive, while only about 5% of feedback given via HSL’s old feedback system is positive.

Next the new instant feedback system will be tested on trams and the Metro in good cooperation with Helsinki City Transport HKL.

The instant feedback system is an operations management system that carries passengers’ voice across the organization. It is a tool for managing major changes.
