Challenge:

Leverage technology to improve Chicago’s constituent services, efficiency, and government transparency.

Solutions:

Results:

•   Open-source applications increase knowledge and usage of city services, while providing solutions that can be used by other cities around the world.

•   Ability to analyze various data sets provides insights for improving operations.

•   Solutions improve transit management and customer service.

— John Flynn, chief information officer, Chicago Transit Authority

SmartData Advantage platform

WindyGrid Open-data portal Bus tracker

“If you’re standing at the bus stop, you can send a text message with the number of the bus stop, and it returns the next 3 buses that are coming. We get over 2 million hits a month on just that text-messaging function alone.”

City of Barcelona Smart City Parking, Lighting, and Water Initiatives

Challenge:

Improve citizens’ quality of life and stimulate a new Smart City economy.

Solutions:

Results:

•   US$58 million annual savings using smart water technology

•   US$50 million annual increase in parking fee revenues due to use of smart parking technology

•   47,000 new jobs created

“We are not really putting a focus on a concrete area, but are taking little steps forward and thinking about how technology can be used to transform the lives of our citizens. When I am referring to citizens, I am referring not only to those citizens like me, who live in the city, but also to companies who are part of the city.”

— Júlia López Ventura, coordinator of Smart City strategy,

City of Barcelona

City of Oslo Smart Street Lighting Project

Challenge:

Control lighting and electrical costs and become more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Solutions:

Results:

•   City had US$1.3 million in electricity savings annually, which is roughly 20 percent of the cost to light streets prior to the new capabilities being added.

•   City had reduced maintenance costs and improved lighting service.

•   New system will pay for itself in less than three years.

“We wanted to take more control of the lights. That is where we started this project: finding a system that enables us to dim our lights and also have control over how much electricity the lights are using.”

— Joakim Hjertum, head of section, Oslo Street Division

City of Stockholm IoE-Driven Congestion Charging System

Challenge:

Reduce traffic congestion and improve the environment in Stockholm.

Solutions:

Results:

•   20 percent reduction in traffic within the congestion-charged area

•   2–3 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emission

•   10–15 percent reduction in pM10-level particulates

“The media coverage in the days leading up to the congestion tax rollout was focused on the expected chaos. However, a successful rollout led to almost immediate positive media coverage focused on the system’s efficiency and positive impact.”

— Daniel Firth, chief strategy officer, City of Stockholm Traffic Administration

City of San Antonio IoE-Based Services

Challenge:

Use technology to deliver city services more efficiently.

Solutions:

Results:

•   Previously, about US$2 billion was lost due to longer commutes, higher fuel expenses, safety issues, etc.

•   Remote court system promotes more efficient delivery of judicial resources and city services, shortening wait times and stretching judicial resources.

•   The new technology dramatically reduced the administrative burden on police officers.

“We’re using technology more and more to enhance how we deliver services. That’s primarily the end goal: to deliver services in a much more efficient way than we have in the past.”

— Hugh Miller, chief technology officer, City of San Antonio

Ninth Circuit Court of Florida Remote Language Interpretation over Video

Challenge:

Provide quality interpretation for more than 22,000 hearings per year with just 8 staff interpreters and ensure quality interpretation in 67 courtrooms across 2 counties, serving 1.37 million citizens.

Solutions:

Results:

•   The system is able to support an increase in caseloads.

•   Interpreters can now communicate with their clients with the same or better quality than if they were “live.”

•   The circuit court saw savings in excess of 50 percent of their interpretation services budget.

“Using a remote, centralized interpreting system, the Ninth Circuit is now able to provide on-demand language interpretation services to courts, bringing in—via real-time video technology—certified interpreters for any language a litigant or litigator might need.”
