PaLibraries LibGuides Project

• Every trainer and participant who attends a workshop will have ADMIN status.

• Access to LibGuides is free to trained participants until September 1, 2012.

• All LibGuides can be backed up so that the content can be saved.

• All URLs will begin with http://palibraries.libguides.com/.

• Within LibGuides, you have the ability to share each other’s LibGuides content with permission of the author.

Creating Accounts/My Profile

STEP 1: Login to http://palibraries.libguides.com/admin.php use the password “palibraries.”

Go to “Edit My Account” and change your password to something you will remember. Don’t forget it.

STEP 2: Click on “Customize Profile Box”

Fill in info and upload a photo from your computer if you have one.

Say Cheese!

Creating a New LibGuide

• Click on GUIDES then select CREATE NEW GUIDE.

• Add guide title and description, then CREATE.

• This initial page is called HOME as indicated by the tab. Each new page you create within this guide will have a tab title that you give it.

• Default is three columns, but this can be changed now or later

• Status is “unpublished” until “published” or made “private”(Guide Settings-Change guide info)

From the orange Command Bar, select GUIDE LOOK &

FEEL. Click on CHANGE LAYOUT/COLORS..

Box Types

1. Within the LibGuide you just created, you will be creating boxes of content.

2. Click on ADD NEW BOX and look at the type of boxes available.

3. Use the BOX TYPES EXPLORER to view the types.For example, content boxes are available for

text, web links with descriptions, audio or video content, widgets, simple polls, RSS feeds, etc.

4. Notice that you can reuse an existing box that you may have created on another page, like a search of your online catalog.

From ADD NEW BOX, click on BOX TYPES EXPLORER

Notice that by selecting any box type, you will get a description of that type of box. By clicking More info... at the bottom of the explanation, you get step-by-step instructions from the Help Guide.

Step-by-Step: Creating Various Types of Content Boxes

The Basic Steps (don’ t do this yet):

1. Click on ADD NEW BOX.

2. Select the type of box

3. Give the box a title and CREATE BOX.

4. Go into the box just created and add text or other content.

5. At any time, PREVIEW from the Command Bar shows what your students or patrons see. A place to park your “stuff.”

Within the LibGuide you just created, click on ADD NEW

BOX, select RICH TEXT/DYNAMIC CONTENT/SCRIPTS.

• Give the box a short title like “About this Topic”

• Leave position as is (you can move boxes around later)

• Click on CREATE BOX

In the Box you just created, click on ADD TEXT and type something to describe the “contents” of this LibGuide.

Within the LibGuide you just created, click on another ADD NEW BOX, select LINKS BOXES, then LINKS & LISTS . This choice allows space for text to describe each URL.

• Give the box a short title like “Suggested Links.”

• Leave position as is (you can move boxes around later).

• Click on CREATE BOX.

In the box you just created, click on ADD TEXT and type something about the links you select to put in this box, if needed.

Then open another Internet browser page and search for a site you want to add.

Clicking on ADD NEW LINK, type in a title, paste in the URL and give the site a short description and save.

Icon of tools allows you to edit the link and its description, or delete it. Icon of a bar graph shows Quick Statistics for the current month and total since creation.

Unless you disable comments, users can add comments about these links.

Box 3: Multimedia - Books from a Catalog

Give the box a name like “Recommended Book” and CREATE BOX.

Open another Internet browser page and search your online catalog for a title and its info.

Back in LibGuides, click on ADD NEW BOOK and fill out the dialog box with info from the book located in your online catalog.

Click on the blue “S” to retrieve free cover art (ISBN required). Need more help?

Give the box a name like “Recommended YouTube” and CREATE BOX.

Now open another Internet browser page and search YouTube for a video to add.

Click on the SHARE, then EMBED. Copy the html code (not the URL).

Go back to LibGuides and paste in the code and save.

Moving Boxes on the Page

When a column is not wide enough to fit a box (like a video):

From the orange command bar ADD/EDIT PAGES – Dropdown REORDER BOXES

Drag box title to new column and drop when it turns green.

UPDATE BOX ORDER at the bottom.

Column widths can also be changed for the page.

ADD/EDIT PAGES – RESIZE COLUMNS.

Box 5: Multimedia – RSS Feeds

Give the box a name like “Latest news on…” and CREATE BOX.

Go to the box you just created, click on ADD TEXT and add a short description if needed.

In another browser, search or create a feed (i.e., Google News). Right click on the RSS icon and copy the URL.

Back in LibGuides, click on ADD RSS FEED and paste the URL, selecting between 3-5 items to display.

Create an Advanced News SearchGo to http://news.google.com/ and

set up your search. Click on the dropdown in the search box to open Advanced Search. Run the search to be sure it gets the results you are looking for.

Copy the long URL at the top of the Google News Search results page.

Go to ADD RSS FEED in the box on your LibGuide page, paste in the URL at FEED URL and limit the results to 3 to 5 items.

Box 6 – Creating a Link to Your Online CatalogSTEP 1- SET UP

Give the box a title something like “Search Our Library Catalog” and CREATE BOX.

Select your catalog vendor tab from Library Catalog Searches. Read the directions.

The PROCESS –

1. You will be copying some html code,

2. Editing the code to add your catalog location info., and

3. Pasting it into the LibGuides RICH TEXT edit box.

4. Really, you can do this!

Box 6 – Creating a Link to Your Online Catalog STEP 2- Editing the Code

Open a new browser and go to your online catalog to locate your domain and site or profile number.

Domain is after http:// For example: Destiny.easdpa.org

Site number appears at the bottom of the screen when you mouse-over the name of your school from the Destiny list of district schools (Directions may differ if you have other systems. Read your directions.)

For example, in Destiny the site number is likely a 3 digit number.

Box 6 – Creating a Link to Your Online Catalog STEP 2- Pasting in the Code

Copy the html code provided in the Library Catalog Searches file for your system.

Back in LibGuides, click on ADD TEXT in the box you just created. Click the PLAIN TEXT EDITOR tab. Paste in the code.

Replace the domain name and site or profile number wherever it appears (For Destiny- replace one site number and 6 domain names.)

Save and refresh the page.

Destiny should look like this:

Creating Search Boxes to your Online Databases

Go to Creating Search Boxes to create custom search boxes with their graphics for databases to which your library subscribes such as Gale, EBSCO, etc.

You can also make a direct link to a POWER Library database, but it will only work within your library.

From home, library users must be directed to the public library’s page where they type in their patron barcode number to use POWER Library databases.

Box 7 – Creating a Poll or Survey

• The “User Feedback” has predefined Q & A’s about the usefulness of the info. on the LibGuide. Results are emailed to the LibGuide owner.

• The “Interactive Poll” is best for a simple poll on a topic and allows you to create your own Q and A’s and view the results in Admin mode.

• Our license does not include the “Survey” choice.

This is automatically created. You do not need to type in Q’s and A’s. They are predefined. Feedback is emailed to the LIbGuides owner.

If you don’t want the email, create your own feedback poll with a “Interactive Poll” box. Results are viewed online in Admin.

Creating Sub Pages in a LibGuide

Within the LibGuide you created: • Click on ADD/EDIT PAGES (orange command

bar)• Select ADD/REUSE PAGES.• Enter a short title & description• Under POSITION, select the page to “Add

Adding Tags to a LibGuide

Within the LibGuide you created: • Click on GUIDE SETTINGS (orange command bar)

and select CHANGE GUIDE INFO

• Type your tags separating each with a comma, or click any existing tag to assign it to this guide.

• On the “home” LibGuides page, you can then search by tags.

Locating “Reusable Content”

• Go to HELP on the orange bar• Click on GUIDES BEST OF tab  http://bestof.libguides.com• In the “Browse by Subject” box, select “Resource Collections”• Select “How Stuff Works” the “How Stuff Works-Animal Guide”• Scroll to bottom and follow “How to Grab This Guide For

Your LibGuides System.”

LibGuides allows you to share the Guides you create and copy from others with permission!

You can also grab a box from a page and insert it in another guide.

“Publishing” your LibGuide

On the orange Command Bar, click on GUIDE SETTINGS.

Select CHANGE GUIDE INFORMATION.

Under “Guide Publication Status” select “Published” and save.

“Backing Up” your LibGuide

On the orange Command Bar, click on CREATE BACKUP.

This will save all pages associated with the LibGuide that is open. The file is one continuous file for all pages.
