BUILDING PROPOSAL
2 0 1 9 - 2 0 2 3
WELCOMEIt’s a pleasure to submit to you this booklet outlining future building plans.
We are excited about what God is currently doing in the life of our church, and what He will do in the future. Our ministry to the Tauranga community is one that God continues to trust us with. Growth is a reward for trust. Trust that God has placed in us as a community of people who take Jesus and His mission seriously.
We are moving into a multi-stage building project and it will take prayer and sacrifice. God loves it when His people seek Him about all things. So, as the leadership, we submit these plans to God and to each of you to partner with what we believe will be a very exciting time ahead.
Yours in Christ,
Craig VernallSenior Pastor
We are excited to present this report explaining the alterations that we envision for our church facility.
In 2010, we did a fairly major renovation which created our West Wing and present Auditorium. At that time, we added some needed improvements and upgraded some infrastructure, but stopped short of improving all the amenities that would enhance our facility.
We now feel it necessary and timely to move forward on our prior plans. These plans will be carried out in four stages:
• Stage 1 will expand the Café and expand/upgrade the Office work space.
• Stage 2 will expand our Kid’s Ministry area with a family café, create a new Nurture Room and better space for Kid’s check-in, and expand the Kitchen.
• Stage 3 will include the construction of a new Chapel at the south entrance to our building – a space for prayer, weddings and funerals.
• Stage 4 will include an extension to our current Auditorium.
We will initiate these Stages in order as sufficient funding becomes available for each. Stage 3 and 4 may be reversed in order if needs have changed at that time.
Funding will consist of a combination of: money already in a holding account for future construction, grants from outside entities, and future giving/pledges from our congregation. Our team’s desire is that we will initiate Stage 1 in 2019 or early 2020, and conclude all four Stages within a three to four-year timeframe.
Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel and your commitment to Bethlehem Baptist Church,
Kyle FleischmannExecutive Pastor
BUILDING TEAM REPORT
briefBethlehem Baptist Church intends to undertake
alterations of their current building at 90 Bethlehem Road in the following four stages.
stage onecafé space
Each Sunday we have great fellowship in our Café. The Café is also used throughout the week by both in-house ministries (Encore, Serious Coffee, Alpha, etc.) as well as outside groups that hire the space. We have now reached a point at which the Café is often overcrowded – there are not quite enough chairs and tables, and queues for coffee and food fill up quickly. We feel now is a good time to expand the Café space and add a third servery.
We will increase the Café space by utilising the original southern foyer, removing the dividing wall, and replacing the eastern wall with a collapsible wall. We will add another servery station (to increase to 3) to spread out pedestrian flow and line queues. The internal environment aims to be comforting and social, with a variety of contemporary materials, table settings and couches. There will be larger entry/exit points between the foyer and Café to allow for better pedestrian flow between the two spaces.
The new servery station will be like a pod, situated between the Café space and the upgraded Office space. It will have the ability to be entirely shut-down or opened to either side, so that it can serve both situations either simultaneously or one at a time. The servery will contain a coffee machine, sinks, dishwasher, refrigeration equipment, etc.

PROPOSED GROUND FLOOR PLANPHASES
office space
We have a lot of staff that do a lot of great work. Twenty-six of our 36 staff use our ground floor Office space on a weekly basis. For quite a while now, this space has been inadequate – it’s cramped, it is affected greatly by the extremes of summer and winter, and there is no room for growth. We need a functional office space that allows for efficiency and collaboration so that our staff can serve our community in a greater capacity.
We will increase the Office space by increasing overall square meters and removing internal walls to create more of an open plan working environment. The space will cater for a variety of working situations from singular workstations to large meetings. The working space will be functional and built to today’s standards, making use of passive ventilation open space heating and air conditioning as well as smart eco lighting systems. Variable acoustic environments which allow for versatile meeting spaces, one-on-one catchup’s and single working pods will be key to creating a working space that everyone can use. Individual workstations will be hi/lo desks so that staff can sit or stand while working.
The space will include an enclosed conference room, two private meeting rooms for pastoral care, and several enclosed offices for our pastors and full-time staff. The working space will have direct access to the new servery for self-catering so that disruption of large gatherings in the main Café are avoided. This area will be adaptable so that it can function as part of the office Monday through Friday and additional Café overflow on Sundays. The furniture in this shared Café/Office space will be a combination of soft chairs, couches, and low tables to provide a welcoming social environment.
The reception desk will move near the main entrance and convert to a ‘welcome desk’ on Sundays. Roll up doors will give us the ability to separate the Café and foyer if needed during the week.

stage twokid’s space
Our Kid’s Ministry is thriving, and this Stage will utilise the current courtyard to add a lot of space. The new space will create a robust family-friendly social environment. It will have an atrium, open feel with sections being double-floor height, taking advantage of the northern light through large glazed windows. The theme will be fresh and lively, creating a place where children and parents are free to relax.
It will have its own coffee servery and be furnished with robust outdoor style hard furniture, kid and family friendly. We will create a new area for Kid’s Check-in that is bigger and more efficient, reducing the bottleneck when people enter and exit between services.
This space will have a new Nurture Room for mums, adjoining the main auditorium so they can connect visually with the service and also be close to the family café. This will allow us to re-purpose the current nurture room for additional Kid’s breakout space.
kitchen space
Our current Kitchen is adequate and is utilised heavily, however, with the plans for this Stage we will enlarge the Kitchen a bit and unite it with the main servery in the Café. This will allow for a more efficient flow from preparation in the Kitchen to serving people in the Café. The additional space will also allow more room for food preparation and storage.
As part of this alteration, the men’s and women’s toilets near the Kitchen will be restructured and upgraded as well.

The Chapel will be connected to the Café on the south side, and be utilised for prayer, weddings, funerals and small events. It will have its own small internal foyer and will seat approximately 90 people. The new structure will utilise the current entry portico for its roof and ceiling – walls will be added and we will keep the trusses and supporting beams of the portico exposed.
It will be contemporary in material selections, however, treating it conservatively with a strong link to traditional chapel interior spaces. Windows shall provide a visual link to the outside landscaping and allow natural light admittance throughout the day. It will be reflective of the Bethlehem community and wider Tauranga/Bay of Plenty region so that it can be a real community asset.
stage fourauditorium
We have prior consent to extend the current Auditorium towards the north property line. With a growing congregation, this will allow enough space to grow into for years to come, not only for our Sunday services but for events that occur throughout the year. Our own ministries in addition to dozens of outside organizations use this space.
This extension will push the stage and side-stage areas back several meters allowing for 6-8 more rows of chairs to be added. It will also increase the side-stage areas for more storage and additional space for people to wait off stage.

how you can partnerFirst and foremost, be in prayer over this entire project – for the planning, the communication, the finances, the build time, and for the final product.
You can partner through giving – either a one-time financial gift, or by completing a pledge card to make payments over the next 12, 24, 36, or 48 months.
The total amount may seem overwhelming, but if we break up this amount to a weekly amount for each of us it totals just over one large coffee or hot chocolate per week – right around $30 per month. This becomes very achievable if we each sacrifice just a bit.
Another consideration is the benefit from filing your charitable donations and re-donating those amounts. The government gives us 33% back on all donations, so it is the gift that keeps giving. An exercise on a donation of $1000 per year plus the charitable payback equates to $5240 over 4 years – $1240 more than the $4000 out of pocket.
Pledge cards are included with this booklet for you to complete.
