Peopleʼs Choice Awards 2012ChallengeEvery year, the Peopleʼs Choice Awards opens up voting to the public on the most prolific acts of the year, but this year was different. For 2012, the goal was to go bigger and more social than ever. The objectives were to, beat the previous year's vote numbers, get celebrities engaged and involved in the promotion process, make consumers feel like they are a part of the show, and connect the on-stage experience with the social experience on Facebook.
SolutionThe experience was designed to intertwine identity, conversation, and community. Fansʼ interests surfaced immediately for voting, e.g. if they like Rihanna on Facebook, they would be presented with all of the categories that she was nominated for and could vote for her in every category with a single click, creating a contextual and frictionless voting experience. Voting also took place across Twitter through the application, pushing out fans' choices with nominee and category hashtags, all of which were tracked and counted toward the final vote tally.
With each vote, fans gained a ballot into the grand prize sweepstakes: a VIP pack of tickets to the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles! To drive business value and traffic to the program across Facebook, a customize mirrored experience was deployed onto P&G partnersʼ brand Pages, including CoverGirl, Pantene and Clairol.
In the end, we brought it all together, by both releasing the first ever Fan Award on the red carpet and by projecting the Facebook votersʼ faces live in-show and through an interactive mosaic reveal on Facebook.
ResultsIn total, the social experience garnered over 55 million votes, and surpassed 2011 by over 3,600%. Between the application itself, and posts from the partner pages and the nominees themselves, roughly 1 billion social impressions were created during the single month of voting.

When design is good, you notice the good design. When design is great, it seamlessly integrates with the fabric of the campaign.

Words of Wisdom from Digital Design Professionals
Without Design, there is no digital marketing. Without Design, there would be no digital. Design is not only the vehicle that delivers your message, it's often the message itself. Creating successful Design is not just about color and font - those are merely elements to be manipulated. Think of Design as every single aspect of your audience's experience: the method used to reach them, the context in which they are engaged, the format and styling of what they see and hear. Design is symbiotic to digital marketing. It's how you connect, evoke, and drive people to act or think a certain way.

To succeed in design today, you must do these three things...

Words of Wisdom from Digital Design Professionals
1. Have an understanding of design principles and fundamentals.
2. Have a strong skill-set with design and development tools and technology.
3. Continue to learn new processes and technologies. Never stop learning!

Words of Wisdom from Digital Design Professionals
1. Be versatile. Not only being able to design and know the programs (everyone knows how to use Photoshop), but knowing what's technically possible in the development of the application or site and how to push the envelope with those limitations.
2. Understanding who your audience is and how they interpret the world.
3. Being able to explain your designs, as well as speaking to the narrative of the design.

Words of Wisdom from Digital Design Professionals
1. Be able to communicate. With human beings. You have to be able to ask hard questions and answer hard questions. You have to be able to defend a decision you feel is right by communicating the reasoning, research, and/or your understanding of the problem your design solves. A huge part of design is what you do away from your computer.
2. Understand that design is not always about your style, tastes, preferences, and biases. Success depends on your ability to wrap your head around another person's or organizations's needs, to understand their audiences, to have a grasp on the constraints of your projects, and a command of the tools required to execute. In many ways, design is all about everyone but you.
3. And you must accept that the only reason you've fallen in love with one of your designs is because you haven't yet created superior one. Keep pushing yourself.

Words of Wisdom from Digital Design Professionals
1. Be a passionate learner, then be a disciplined doer. In that order.
1.5. Listen intently. To your clients. To your mentors. To the world. Keep up on current events, fashion trends, and technology. Good Designers don't just make pretty things, they have insights that power Design solutions.
2. Be bold. Take risks constantly but learn from failure. Get behind your decisions but allow yourself to be wrong (because you usually are).
2.5. Prototype everything and take critique gracefully. There's no time to do it all yourself and perfection is a myth.
3. Design with your mind, not with a cursor. The tools are there to make concepts become reality. Don't become dependent upon your tools - they'll change and evolve on you. This said, know all the tools. Tricky, right?

Words of Wisdom from Digital Design Professionals
First, be undeniably yourself. That what people are buying. Be wide in knowledge, but laser-focused on what you want to do. Second, master the english language. Know how to write and what people need to hear. Third, build-up your EQ. It's what will allow you to make a career of this.

A Necessary Mad Men Analogy...
Most good Designers I know are 1/3 Peggy (work ethic), 1/3 Harry (trend and tech), and 1/3 Sal (style and flair). If you're really good, you can keep the footing of Mr. Cooper (humanity and humility) and dazzle like Don (evocative experience creation through truly knowing your audience).
