Digimap download is a system that allows you to extract topographic data for a selected area and place it into specific graphics and mapping software. The data is downloaded in NTF, DXF or GML format, this is suitable for direct insertion into some software in this form. However other packages require the data to be passed through a translator before it can be used. This is a straight forward process and these translators can be obtained quite easily through the University or from the Digimap site.

A couple of examples of mapping software are MapInfo and Arcinfo, however there are many other types available.

These programmes enable you to create more complex images such as 3D digital terrain models .The software enables you to create layers so you can overlay different kinds of data one on top of another.

You may want to include information from other sources, which could be boundary, land use, or social deprivation data and incorporate this with Digimap download. There are many other different types of data which can be combined to provide a map to suit to your requirements.

Digimap Download:

1. Return to the home page.

2. Click on the “Data Download Services” icon on this page.

3. Click on the “Digimap Download” icon.

4. The “Digimap Data Download facility” page opens up.

5. Follow the stages through steps 1-5, from product/format to download on the section headings. Save the file you have created onto your computer, memory stick, disk etc.

When your download is complete and if no further action is required, you should log out of Digimap by using the button on the blue bar beneath the EDINA symbol.

The data is now ready for insertion into your chosen software either directly or via a translator.
