In the Mouth

• Digestion actually beginsin the mouth.

• The teeth break the foodinto smaller pieces, andthe tongue moves thepieces around so thatsaliva can be mixed withthem.

• This begins the digestion.

• Then swallow, and the journey begins!

Esophagus

• About 10” long

• Moves food from thethroat to the stomach.

– The muscle movement iscalled peristalsis.

• Heartburn is when acidfrom the stomach gets inhere.

Stomach

• Stores the food youeat, breaks it downinto tiny pieces.

• Mixes food withdigestive juices.

• Acid in the stomachkills bacteria.

• It can stretch andshrink.

Small Intestine

• Small intestines are roughly22 feet long. “Small” refers to

its diameter, not its length.

• Insides are coated with little

„fingers‟ called cilia toincrease surface area.

• Nutrients from the food passinto the bloodstream through

the small intestine walls.

• You can have pieces removedbut it is very hard for your

body to get the right nutrients.

Large Intestine

• About 5 feet long.

• Accepts what smallintestines don‟t

absorb.• Absorbs water and

minerals from thewaste matter.

• You can lose a largepart of this and stillsurvive.

Liver

• Directly affects digestion byproducing bile. – Bile helps digest fat.

• Processes nutrients in the

blood, filters out toxins andwaste.

• Is often called the body‟senergy factory.

• You cannot live without aliver, although you can livewith a part of one.

• Drinking alcohol damagesthe liver.

Gall Bladder

• Stores bile from theliver.

• Delivers bile when

food is digested.• Fatty diets can cause

gallstones.

• You can live without agallbladder.

Pancreas

• Produces compoundsto digest fats andproteins.

• Neutralizes acids thatenter small intestine.

• Regulates bloodsugar by producing

insulin.• If it doesn‟t work right

you get diabetes.
