President’s Corner
get involved and enjoy the events and the camaraderie of your club and many like-minded people! I would also invite you to attend a board meeting. We meet the first Thursday of the month at a restaurant or a member’s house. Any member is welcome to attend our board meetings and share your ideas. It is your club and your board would love to have your input. Even if you do not attend a meeting please don’t hesitate to communicate your ideas to a member of our board. Do you enjoy reading the Kassette? How would you like to contribute? Got a camera? Got a computer? We would love to have you contribute to the Kassette, photos and articles from our members. Roger Fabel and our regular contributing writers do a great job with providing interesting material for our newsletter. That being said it would be great to get different perspectives from members who attend our event. As for some of our upcoming events, registration is open for the Drivers Ed at Sebring for February 23-24. This event is very popular and will probably fill up. It’s our first full Driver’s Ed of the year, so don’t delay, go to clubregistration.net, and register today. Also, keep in mind our Zonefest, May 24- 27, this event is geared for the whole family! It will be at Sebring and the Chateau Elan. The weekend will include something for every Porsche enthusiast. Concours, Rally, tech quiz, autocross, socials, and even a Driver’s Ed. There will be activities for adults, kids and even the adult kids like me. All kidding aside the event will really be for the whole family. We will be talking more about this weekend in the near future. If you haven’t registered, and made your room reservation there’s time, but don’t wait too long; the Chateau Elan already has over 25 reservations for that event! There will be sufficient fun, food, and activities to keep everyone happy and content for the weekend! I can’t wait! If you would like to volunteer, Zonefest would be a great event to join in the fun, we need you! If you have already volunteered, thanks and let’s keep the momentum going!I look forward to meeting you and seeing you and your Porsche at an event in the near future.
Happy New Year Gold Coast Region,As promised, 2013 did start with a bang for our Gold Coast Region. We started off with a trip to the Keys and the Key Largo Brunch. We also shared hosting the Porsche corral at Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, Good Times! Ahhhh the
smell of 110 octane fuel! Thank goodness the racing season has begun for 2013. By the time you read this many of us will have just returned home from the 48 hours at Sebring Club Race weekend. This year was the 20th anniversary for the Gold Coast Region, Suncoast Region and PCA Club Racing’s, first event of the year and usually the largest event of the year. Always amazing, always Porsche and always fun. Gold Coast Region partners with Suncoast Region and PCA Club Racing to bring together Porsche enthusiasts from around the world to experience an all-Porsche event. Each year we have over three hundred Porsches and drivers. The weekend offers wheel-to-wheel racing, advanced solo driver’s ed, and autocross. And did I mention it’s all Porsches? Not to mention 4 days and evening of socializing with Porsche Club friends from all over US, Canada, South America and Europe. It is the Porsche Club of America and PCA Club Racing at its best. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the enthusiastic volunteers that help make this event run so smoothly. Without their hard work and effort, 48 Hours at Sebring would only be a footnote in history. But, due to their continued dedication, as well as, early mornings and long hours every one of our volunteers has willingly given, 48 Hours is not only possible, but hugely successful. Thanks again volunteers! That being said, there are many other events coming up during this year that you may find of interest. I would suggest that you consider volunteering for those events that are of interest to you. Whether you choose to volunteer for social, charity, track, or competitive events, you will surely find yourself among friends and always make new friends! If it’s your first event you will surely meet and make new friends, Volunteering is not just about the work, it’s also a way to involve yourself in events and the activities of your interest with a great bunch of people. So, come out, volunteer,

Concours Corner: Microfiber Towels
If there is one thing I hate in paint (besides the usual grime, dirt, dings, scratches and neglect), it’s the swirl marks, or “spider webs”, as we often call them. These are the tiny, microscopic, and
even sometimes obvious, circular scratches visible in your paint surface under certain lighting. We all probably have them, since our vehicles have been used, washed and cleaned many times. What is amazing to me, however, is that they are observable in so many new-car showrooms across the country. I marvel that at even many high-end car dealerships, swirl marks actually appear on what was once a magnificently new and brilliant surface. I can assure you that the manufacturer didn’t put them on their finished product. The fact is that most cars have them. But how did they get there?
The obvious way would be due to car cleaning and a lack of education. Without going into much detail about painted surfaces, the car paint is the skin or the shell of the body. And even though the paint is strong and durable, it is still extremely sensitive and subject to scratches. Unlike our skin, which constantly regenerates itself by producing new cells, once the paint is scratched it becomes difficult to heal. It can be done, but often takes professional care to remove the swirl marks. The best way to deal with the problem is to avoid the problem altogether.
This article presents some ideas and observations, but by no means offers the only ways to escape the affliction. Hopefully you will find it useful, recognizing that the way you treat your 36-month lease or servant car (the one that takes you to and from work and on errands) may be totally different from the way you treat your garage queen or Concours investment.
As we already discussed, avoidance is the best strategy in escaping scratchy swirl marks. The first and best thing we can do is to keep other people from washing our car! By other people, I’m talking about neighborhood-school-charity car washes (the only thing I would let them clean are my tires - on the top side), and most all “professional” car washers. These are the ones that hang out in downtown office garages, have a workstation tent at a gas station, or come to your house. Many of these experts usually fall into only a slightly higher category than the high schoolers. Because “professional” usually means that they make a living doing this, not that they necessarily know what they are doing. There are exceptions, of course, but most of them are not experts. Avoid taking your baby through automated garages, even brushless ones. And last, another sure way to guarantee spider webs and ruin your surface is to have your kids wash your car! Swirl marks are caused by abrasive action on your paint, which occurs using the wrong materials when cleaning your car.
One of the best inventions for cleaning and taking care of sensitive surfaces has been the invention of the “Microfiber Towel”. You see them everywhere, particularly at detail shops and car shows, where most everyone uses them. They have become the weapon of choice by most true experts. Microfibers have a lot of advantages in paint care over the traditional cotton rag, lambs wool, chamois, natural sponges, or anything else. These towels are soft on your paint surface, and practically 100% scratch proof if used properly. They are extremely durable and can be used multiple times when given proper care. They are also fairly inexpensive. It’s hard to find anything that produces the same exceptional results for washing, cleaning and polishing car surfaces. For drying, these towels are extremely absorbent, capable of holding many times their weight, which makes them an exceptional tool for moist surfaces.
Microfiber towels are fully synthetic, or man-made. They are made up of a combination of polyester and polyamide, with different weave patterns for different uses. I know what polyester is because I had a suit made of that material at one time. But polyamide, just know it has something to do with absorption capabilities. (Google can help with this, if you like.) Microfiber has many uses today and is used to make mats, knits, weaves for apparel, upholstery, industrial filters and, of course, cleaning towels. Many athletic-wear manufactures are now using microfiber materials because of their softness, coolness and absorption qualities. The shape, size and combination of synthetic fibers are selected for specific and certain characteristics such as softness, toughness, absorption or repellency of water, electrodynamics, and filtering capabilities.
For our purposes, the towels we want are generally a 70-30 mix of polyester and polyamides, although an 80-20 mix may be slightly better for polishing. It has less absorption qualities but more polishing attributes. The weave can also vary greatly. Typically a thinner weave is more abrasive than a heavier one, and often good for window, interior and wheel use. The heavier weaves or fluffier ones are excellent for cleaner and wax removal, providing plenty of space to trap the material. The waffle or wide weave is for drying and has superior absorption capabilities. A good size to get for your general towels is the 16x16 inch. They fold into quarters and make eight “pies”. Smaller dimensions can be better for the interior, wheels and windows.
As far as colors, there are some differences. The dye used in the darker color towels is heavier and makes towels feel less soft. So a black, dark red or dark green towel will be a bit rougher than a light blue, yellow or white towel. In addition, darker colors may bleed in the wash but lighter colors can show dirt, which may be good or bad.

Fred
The main reason for so many colors is so you can distinguish which color to use for what purpose. For example, pick a color for wax removal and another color for polishing, another color for the interior, and another for the windows. Depending on how technical you want to be, or how crazy you already are, you can use six different weaves and distinct colored towels (not counting the microfiber application pad). There is a towel designed for drying, one for polish removal, one for wax removal, one for surface polishing, another one for the interior, one for the windows; and, lastly, the wheels. You can decide, but it is not a good idea to use the same towel for multiple activities. You can use one type of weave and color if you want, but change to a fresh towel.
In recent years the use and demand for microfiber products has exploded, and like any other boom, new producers have been popping up everywhere, particularly in Asia. Many, not all, are manufacturing low quality products to compete only on price. There is obviously some disparity on the quality of towels one can purchase. A dead giveaway of poor quality can be seen on the edge of the towel. Volume producers heat-cut the material, and with a little heat comes melting, which can produce a hard rough edge and damage your paint. Take a look at how the edge of the towel is finished.
Another giveaway is towel density or weave. As in fine Persian rugs, you want a higher density. The range for quality
weaves is in the 90,000 to 225,000 fibers per square inch. Microfiber fibers are typically 1/100th the thinness of a human hair, so unless you have the time to count them the label is a good place to start. Cheap towels are thinner and have short naps, have less weave per square inch, and weigh less. They are good for cleaning certain things, but not for polishing.
As in everything else, more expensive towels cost more for a reason. High craftsmanship is expensive, and you know the rest of the story. It’s hard to beat good quality microfiber towels when it comes to softness, gentleness, polishing, drying, and cleaning capabilities on the paint surface.
Now you can say goodbye to the spiders …

It does not seem possible that 2012 flew by so quickly and we are into a new year full of great Porsche events, but we are back in the fun zone of our race season. I hope many of you were able to enjoy the 24 Hours Rolex race at Daytona and spend time with other members at the PCA hospitality tent and Porsche paddock. This nice addition to the race was developed by one of our Goldcoast
members, Rubin Ladesma many years ago and has been a great hit with everyone providing shelter, refreshments, and big screen TV.
The second event of the year was the Drive and Dine to Key Largo to enjoy brunch we fellow PCA members at the Big Chill. Look for coverage in the next issue of the Kassette. Our Drive and Dine events have become very popular during the past few years and our Social Team has continued to re-book your favorites and plan new venues. The Key Largo event was the 3rd Annual, in March we will be continuing our Annual Swap Meet at a new venue. In March we will be driving to Everglades City in search of stone crabs, this will be new event but I am sure it will be a repeat event in future years.

rock solid.
Mark your calendar for April 7th the date of our annual Spring Fling. We will be at a different location so look for the flyer next month and don’t miss one of our most popular events of the year. Later that month we will be driving our Porsches to the west coast to visit Muscle Car City. If you like muscle cars don’t miss this fantastic collection of history.
The Gold Coast and Suncoast team have been busy preparing for the 20th running of the biggest PCA Club Race in the world at Sebring the beginning of this month. I hope you were able to attend this event which follows the Rolex by one week. Many of the Rolex teams and drivers participate. Some of the 12 Hours of Sebring drivers will also be there. Volunteering for this event is one of the highlights of our PCA year. Look for many photos from this event in the next Kassette.
I hope you like the cover photo of the IROC Porsche. I watched this project as it went thru the Ortega’s shop for body work to Foreign Affairs where the Varela’s put in many hundreds of hours building the car to IROC specs.
See you at the next event, Roger

PORSCHES, PORSCHES & MORE PORSCHES!
The Seventh Annual People Choice Concours and Luncheon at Miami’s Mandarin Oriental was one beautiful, but very windy day! It was the first time that it was too windy for the tent. Members parked their Porsches on the lawn and were greeted by the staff with the Porsche Punch. The Mandarin prepared a delicious Argentinean style barbecue. Over 75 Porsches parked on the lawn and more than 100 attended. This was also a charity drive for Cleveland Clinic Florida Cancer Research Center. Too many of our members have been affected by cancer. Through continued research, therapy advancements help save lives. And it is not too late to make even a small $10 donation, because it all adds up! The People’s Choice Concours had six categories and the winners are: 356 category—1st place: Rodrigo Rego ’62 356 and 2nd place: Luciano Robert’s ’64 356C. 911 category—1st place Jose Abad’93 American Roadster, 2nd place: James Hondros ‘73 911S and 3rd place: Albert Mertz ’67 912. 944, 928 & Panamera Category: 1st place Steve Abreu ’13 Panamera and 2nd place Peter Olliviere ’93 968. 964 & 993 category: 1st place Juan Paul Forat ’96 993 and 2nd place Jose Abbad ’96 993 4S and 3rd place Michael Lanman ’96 993.

1974 911 IROC RSRby Roger Fabel
On our cover and featured on these pages is a special Porsche rebuilt by Foreign Affairs in Pompano Beach, Florida one of the country’s premiere full service European performance facilities and a great supporter to PCA. This father and sons collaboration has achieved many notable wins at world famous races such as the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Daytona, and Foreign Affairs keeps true to its racing heritage with continued support of club racing. Building and maintaining clients’ race cars has always been a passion for the Varelas. With nearly sixty years of combined experience, knowledge and passion for motorsports, they proudly feature their latest race car build: a 1974 Porsche 911 IROC RSR. This car has a special history, it belonged to their crew chief, Curt Omniston, which he drove in pro-solo SCCA time trials for over ten years. Curt was the third owner. Initially featuring dark blue paint, Curt later changed the color to Ferrari yellow. He also changed the original camino-colored interior with a brown exterior, obtained from a Seattle, Washington Porsche dealer. In mid June 2011, Richard Granofsky, a loyal Foreign Affairs client and avid racer for many years, asked Bob Varela if he would be interested in building a 911 IROC RSR race car. When asked what was wrong with his Riley MK22 he owned at the time, Richard responded, “I have always wanted to build my own race car for years and I’m bored with manufacture built race cars.
I’ve owned enough race cars to know exactly what I want built into this race car.” Granofsky also wanted to hand pick all the items and equipment to be used in the build. He left the specialty work -complete suspension, engine and transmission build specifications -to Foreign Affairs’ engineering specialists. The result: a custom built 400 plus horsepower 3.8 liter 993 style engine with modern electronics, suspension and brakes; exterior outfitted with a non-traditional meteor grey metallic color with 11 inch front fenders and 14 inch wide rear fenders, and an IROC whale tail with wicker bill, purchased from Joel at GT Racing. For wheels, they chose eleven inch fronts and fourteen inch rear custom Fuchs centered BBS three piece wheels. The car also includes a Tilton 900 series pedal cluster, LED lighting, Lifeline fire suppression system, JRZ suspension, Hargett billet shifter assembly, Cobra pro racing seat, Momo quick release steering wheel and custom roll cage. The body fitment and paint were performed by Autohaus South, another great supporter of PCA. The only pieces remaining from the original vehicle were the hood, outside door handles, headlight housings and the rear center Porsche reflector. Everything else on the chassis was replaced with the latest products. The RSR took 6 months to build with over 420 hours to complete and weighs in at 2160 LBS. with full tank of gas. Thanks to Bob and Bobby for their story and photographs about this fantastic project.

All we need is you!I can’t believe that January 31 2013-February 3 2013 will be our 20th running of the 48-HOURS-At-Sebring. It has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. In the first two days of registration we signed up over 130 Advanced Solo drivers and 235 racers. This means we will need you more than ever. Why should you care? The Club race raises thousands of dollars for charity’s (Ronald McDonald House) each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. From a what’s in it for me, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night beer and wine party. You also just might Meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. What can you do to help? The Grid, we have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are.1.Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring.2.Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured, etc. 3.Check the driver to ensure that he or she are buckled in, helmet on and secured.Timing and Scoring, we need about 5 more volunteers each day, you will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but is the heart beat of the race. Tech and Scales, we need a couple more volunteers each day to help check Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales. The Corners, we still have quite a few corners with no volunteers assigned, Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 professional SCCA corner workers. Here we assign a maximum of 2 volunteers to each corner to assist the SCCA corner worker. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!!The responsibilities for the corner are,1.You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track2.In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag.3.Assist with any reporting of an on track incident.Notes.At no time would you go over the wall! ,Long pants and closed shoes are required. ,Please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour t-shirt are perfect.Pit Marshalls, This is a Sunday only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the steward. This position is needed during the Enduro. Each driver is required to make a 5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro. We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are,1.Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc. 2.Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment 3.Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded. 4.Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes. Long pants and closed shoes are required. Training will be provided by PCA officials.Miscellaneous Positions. We need 6 volunteers to help with the Saturday night auction, this is where we raise the most money for the charities. We need a few other volunteers to take on whatever task that may come up.To Volunteer go to http://www.48hoursatsebring.com/Volunteers/VolunteerSignUp2013.aspx.For more information please contact Jerry Daily [email protected] or Joe Shukys [email protected]

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Tech Corner: Gear Oil & ATF
Another one of the neglected fluids in automobiles. It must be that out-of-sight, out-of mind, because the gear oil in modern Porsches is set to be replaced every 90,000 miles. Most modern Porsches aren’t even close to that mileage (with few exceptions).
First, all transmission fluid is not created equally. There is a difference between the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) used in automatic transmissions and Gear Oil used in manual transmissions, because the transmissions themselves are quite different, as you can see.
ATF is typically colored red or green to distinguish it from motor oil and other fluids in an automobile. This fluid is a highly specialized oil engineered to perform in automatic and self-shifting transmissions. It is typically a highly-refined hydraulic oil which must be made to conform to multiple tasks. In order to do so, special addiyives must be added, such as: anti-wear, rust and corrosion inhibitors, detergents, dispersants, surfactants, kinematic viscosity and viscosity index improvers and modifiers, seal swell additives and agents, anti-foam and anti-oxidation compounds, high-temperature thickeners, cold-flow improvers, gasket conditioners, pour point depressant and petroleum dyes.
On the other hand, GEAR OIL is a lubricant made specifically for transmissions, transfer cases and differentials in cars and trucks in other words, cars with manual transmissions.Gear Oil is of higher viscosity to better protect the gears and generally has a strong smell of sulphur. Most lubricants for manual gearboxes and differentials are hypoid gear oils. These contain extreme pressure and anti-wear additives to cope with the sliding action of hypoid bevel gears.

You also have a choice between Synthetic and Dino Oils. Generally, synthetic gear oils are used whenever mineral oils have reached their performance limit and can no longer meet the application requirements; for example, at very low or very high temps, extremely high loads, or in extraordinary ambient conditions.
Synthetic lubricants continue to gain market share thanks to their higher performance properties that most often than not trump higher costs.
As in motor oil, the trick to getting the best out of your lubricant is by periodic changes based on time, mileage or continuous track use.

Bahamian Grouper
Skin and bone, 2 pounds grouper or other large fish and prepare cutlets. Dredge in seasoned flour. Heat 2 tablespoons fat in heavy iron pan; add paprika till fat appears red. Saute lightly ¾ cup sliced onion. Brown fish on both sides. At the last minute, top with ½ cup sour cream mixed with a dash of Worcestershire sauce and heat through.
Alta Dean plain yogurt is an excellent substitution for the sour cream. Available at health food stores. Bette Helms, Big Cypress Region
Corn Meal-Coated Flounder Fry
2 Tbsp. flour 1/3 c. seasoned dried bread crumbs1 egg 1 lb. flounder, thawed, if frozen1/3 c. corn meal 1/3 c. salad oil
About 15 minutes before serving, put flour on one piece of wax paper. In a pie pan, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon water. Combine corn meal and bread crumbs on another piece of wax paper. Dip fillets in flour, then in egg, then in corn meal mixture until coated.
In 12 inch skillet over medium heat, in salad oil, fry fillets, carefully, turning once with pancake turner for 8 minutes or until fish flakes with fork. Makes 3 to 4 servings.
Serve with horseradish sauce.Greta Baldwin, Big Cypress Region
Heavenly Fish
Good for most types of Florida saltwater fish, particularly trout, redfish or red snapper.
1 filet (1 to 4 lb.) 1 egg¼ stick of butter ½ tsp. salt3 large Tbsp. mayonnaise 4 Tbsp. chopped onion1 ¼ oz. Parmesan cheese 1 lime6 shakes Tabasco Paprika
Blend ingredients less lime, fish and paprika to make a sauce. Place fish on open broiling pan. Broil 3 inches from unit for approximately 5 minutes per pound, basting with lime juice. When filet is almost done, remove from oven and spoon sauce over. Sprinkle lightly with paprika. Return to broiler for approximately 2 minutes. Watch closely. Fish is ready when sauce turns light brown. Serves approximately 4 per 3 pound filet.
This is a famous (but little known) recipe for fish which I learned from an old sea dog at Boca Grande.
For a side dish, the same old sea dog recommends: Sea Dog Onion:1 large onion (yellow or white) 1 Tbsp. butter½ beef bouillon cube
Cut top (approximately 1 inch square) from onion; place bouillon cube in hole and pack to top with butter. Wrap in aluminum foil and bake for approximately 1 hour at 350°. Remove from oven, let set until fish is ready.
Hard to overbake, it just seems to get better till it burns. Old sea dogs swear by these.Bob Johns, Suncoast Region
