Das Stück hieß zuerst A Cool Exercise für Vibraphon und Klarinette, was es dann aber nicht war, da sich der Komponist etwas vertan hatte. Soll vorkommen, selbst in unseren Kreisen. Also habe ich nochmals von vorne angefangen, um daraus ein Triostück zu machen, und siehe da: Es wurde Licht! Manchmal sind die einfachen Dinge eben doch besser als die weit hergeholten, auch wenn ich mit dieser Meinung im sogenannten „Avantgarde-Business“ ziemlich alleine dastehe; deswe-gen werden alle meine Stücke von Musikern und nicht von Intendan-ten in Auftrag gegeben. Vielleicht sollte ich einfach mehr politische Statements in meine Stücke einfließen lassen? Zum Beispiel so:? Vor al-lem bestens vernetzte und vielreisende Musiker sollten gegen die Glo-balisierung und für die Wiedereinführung von Bezirkszöllen sein. Wei-ters müsste das kapitalistische Urheberrecht, das an die Urheber Geld ohne Leistung ausschüttet und der Allgemeinheit den Gratiszugang zur Musik verwehrt, unser Feind sein. Und warum sind alle andern so schlecht und nur wir so gut? Denken wir mehr in diese Richtung, es gibt großen Nachholbedarf. Und formulieren Sie bitte hier ihre ei-genen gesellschaftskritischen Thesen und lassen Sie sie mir doch per Mail zukommen: office@vao.at. Ich leite sie dann weiter.

Und wenn Ihnen nichts einfällt, dann fragen Sie einfach Ihre Kinder, die Ihnen wahrscheinlich antworten werden: Ich bin dagegen, dass mein(e) Papa/Mama dauernd übt, statt mit mir zu spielen. Ah, und apropos spielen: Empfinden Sie dieses Stück einfach als Genuss, und spielen Sie es jedes Mal noch cooler. Entdecken Sie die kleinen Schön-heiten wie die letzten drei Takte, die ich extra aus Memphis eingeflo-gen habe, oder mögen Sie vielleicht doch lieber die kleinen Fallen? Vergessen Sie einfach alles, was Ihnen auf der Hochschule in Bezug auf Interpretation beigebracht worden ist. Hauptsache: schön denken, schön sprechen, schön spielen!

slight miscalculation. It does happen, even in our select circles. So I have started again from scratch, and have made a trio out of it, and lo: the-re was light! Sometimes the simpler things are better than the more re-cherché ones, even if I am pretty alone with this opinion in the so-called “avant-garde business”; this is also why all my pieces are commissioned by musicians and not by Artistic Directors. Maybe I should simply intro- duce more political statements into my pieces? For example, like this: Especially the closely networking and frequently travelling musicians should be against globalization and advocate the reintroduction of district customs. Furthermore the capitalist copyright law – which channels money to the authors without any achievement and which bars the public from having free access to music – should be our enemy. And why are all others so bad and only we so good? Let us think more in this direction, there is a lot of catching up to do. And please formulate your own society-critical theses here and mail them to me:office@vao.at. I will forward them.

And if you can’t think of anything, then just ask you children. They will probably tell you: I am against my dad/mom constantly practicing instead of playing with me. Ah yes, a propos playing: please simply enjoy this piece, and play it a bit cooler every time around. Discover small gems like the last three bars, which I have especially imported from Memphis; or maybe you prefer the little hidden traps? Just forget everything your conservatory has taught you regarding interpretation. The main thing is: think beautiful, speak beautiful, play beautiful!
