Did You Know…• Three-fourths of the earth’s surface is covered with water?

• The earth is a closed system:The same water that existed on the earth millions of years ago is still present today?

• 97% of our water is salt water found in the ocean?

If you answered “NO” to any of the previous questions,

you should know…

• Our bodies are made of 75% water.• The average American uses 150 gallons of water a day!

– It takes 2 gallons of water to brush your teeth!– It takes 2 to 7 gallons to flush a toilet!– It takes 25 to 50 gallons to take a shower!

That’s a lot of water being used!!

Water exists in 3 phases.

The boiling point of water is 100°C.

Gas or Water Vapor(Clouds or Steam)

Water is a transparent, odorless, and tasteless liquid.

Liquid(Glass of water or Rain)

The freezing point of water is 0°C.

Solid(Ice cubes and snow)

The Never Ending Water Cycle• Water is constantly being used over and over

again!• The same tap water you drank from the fountain at recess may be the same water Dinosaurs drank millions of years ago!

• Evaporation, Condensation, and Precipitation are some of the important words we will learn about!

The Structure of WaterH2O

• A water molecule is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

• It looks like the Shape of Mickey Mouse’s head!

• The ears are the two hydrogen atoms and the face is the oxygen atom.

• We have often used more water than we need.

• We must learn how to recycle and conserve water because we use it over and over again.

• People have over-used water to carry away our waste.

• We have put hazardous materials in or on the ground where they seep into groundwater.

Water Journey through Our Community

• How does our community use water?• How can we conserve our water?• Why is it important to teach other adults and children living in our community how to conserve our water supply?

• What are some good ways to teach them?

We can IMPROVE our water resource by…

• conserving water at home and school.

• cleaning waste from our community before it returns to rivers or lakes.

• preventing pollutants from our homes and our community from washing into waterways with the rain.

The next few weeks, we will journey as

Water Scientists

and discover more about WATER!
