Old Christmas trees are used at the New Jersey shore to help create needed sand dunes! The Christmas trees act similarly to snow fences. Wind carries sand, which gets blocked by the trees’ branches, thereby creating a dune. The trees eventually decompose under the dune and become fertilizer that feeds the dune grass that is planted the following year. As usual, in order to make room in our Newsletter for important, start-of-the- year information, the Mayor’s Message is taking January off. We do, however, want to recognize the Post Office Museum, our Public Works Department, our Police Department, the Garden Club, the Parker Homestead trustees, and all our emergency volunteers for participating in and helping to create such a festive atmosphere during the holidays. A special thanks to our schools for allowing us to light the tree (partly in a virtual kind of way) in the Cafetorium during a very rainy December 1 celebration. And thank you to Trish McDerby for again organizing a wreath-placing ceremony to honor our veterans and their families during the holidays. The Message will return in February, reporting on the town’s reorganization meeting on January 6, 2020 and all the other news that’s fit to print. In the meantime, please call Borough Hall, or visit our Facebook site or www.littlesilver.org to find out about upcoming events or other town information. On behalf of your council members - Don Galante, Corinne Thygeson, AJ McNally, Chris Healy, Mike Holzapfel, and Chris Smith - we hope your holiday season was merry and bright, and we wish all of you a Happy New Year! Did you know…? Old Christmas trees are used at the New Jersey shore to help create needed sand dunes! The Christmas trees act similarly to snow fences. Wind carries sand, which gets blocked by the trees’ branches, thereby creating a dune. The trees eventually decompose under the dune and become fertilizer that feeds the dune grass that is planted the following year.

As usual, in order to make room in our Newsletter for important, start-of-the-year information, the Mayor’s Message is taking January off.
