PREFACE

The first edition of this dictionary was published in 1964, and the revised second edition appeared in 1968.

Since then electrical engineering has made great progress and has enlarged rapidly along with its associated fields. Accordingly, the terms required for electrical engineering have greatly increased. Therefore the publishers, Ohmsha, Ltd. decided to publish this extensively revised and enlarged third edition.

The original editor, Dr. Yuichi Ishibashi, who is my father, devoted great energy to compiling revisions after the appearance of the second edition, but he passed away in 1969 leaving his work in the form of a mass of manuscript cards. Since my speciality is the same as my father's, Mr. Sato, the managing director of Ohmsha, Ltd. approached me with his request to compile this third edition, to which I agreed to bring my father's efforts to fruition.

Following the trend of the first and second editions, in addition to the customary technical terms of electrical engineering, electronics, and communications, this third edition attempts to include relevant terms from the basic sciences of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as from automation, data processing, instrumentation, nucleonics, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, architecture and economics. Also I have tried to include as many verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that appear frequently in general engineering literature as possible. The result is that this third edition contains over 42,000 vocabulary entries.

All technical terms have been first entered in English, in strict alphabetical order, and then in Japanese, German, and Russian in that order. An Index enabling users to find entries in any of these latter three languages has been provided following the main body. In this Index, Japanese words have been arranged in the order of the Japanese syllabary, while German and Russian words are arranged in the alphabetical order of those languages. Supplements provide lists of customary abbreviations and units in the four languages.

To find technical terms which corresponded exactly in these four languages was very hard, and sometimes almost impossible. I will be very grateful to receive users' comments and criticisms about this dictionary, and earnestly hope for feedback for reference and incorporation in future editions.

I hope that this work may prove helpful to people in Japan and overseas, and particularly to researchers, engineers, businessmen, and those who engage in technical cooperation and trade in electrical engineering and related fields. I gratefully acknowledge the support provided by the editorial staff of Ohmsha, Ltd. and Mr. Kenichi Shimizu, who has furnished me with references in Antenna Engineering, and particularly thank my wife Y oshiko for her invaluable assistance.

October 1985

Editor Seiichi Ishibashi, Doctor of Engineering

FOREWORD

Although a few terminological dictionaries for Electrical Engineering with explanations have been published in Japan, including an Electrical Engineering terminology book being prepared by the Ministry of Education for the use of scientific researchers, it is very rare to find a dictionary with the features of this one edited by Dr. Ishibashi. There are various dictionaries being published for this field in many countries and they are very useful as references for research. In the USSR, especially many terminological dictionaries for specific fields in Electrical Engineering have been published as well as for other technical fields. This is indicative of Soviet efforts to make the scientific advances necessary to achieve technological parity with Europe and the U. S. A. It has been my sincere hope that such dictionaries will be published in Japan. In addition, the rapid growth of industry in Japan is attracting the attention of many countries in the world and many people in these countries are becoming interested in studying the Japanese language.

Under these circumstances, it is well-timed to have this dictionary being prepared. It contains 25, 000 vocabulary entries in English, Japanese, German and Russian, not only in the field of Electrical Engineering, but also in the Basic Sciences and Mechanical Engineering pertinent to Electrical Engineering, Nucleonics and others. It is hoped that this dictionary can be useful in referring to various scholastic records. Moreover, considering the rapid growth of foreign trade, this dictionary will contribute a great deal as a business reference book for those involved with trade. Dr. Ishibashi, the editor of this dictionary, joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory after graduating from university and is well known in the world for his long study in electrical standards. He later became a Professor at Shinshu University, and is presently teaching at Tokyo Electrical Engineering College. I have long cherished a strong admiration for Dr. Ishibashi and his achievements. He is so bright and diligent that I believe him to be the most suitable editor for this dictionary. I believe beyond all doubt that this dictionary, to which Dr. Ishibashi devoted all his energies for 7 years, will be more than satisfactory to all users. However, it is sincerely hoped that a revised edition of this dictionary will be prepared in the future for new terms resulting from the latest technological advancements.

PREFACE

The Ministry of Education, with the assistance of many scholars and specialists, has recently standardized a large number of technological terms in specific fields at the Science Encouragement Council. Books of terminology are gradually being prepared. It is known that these books have greatly contributed to the progress of scientific studies in this country.

The editor had been interested in compiling simple electrical terminology cards, and was incidentally designated to edit this Electrical Engineering Terminology Dictionary of four different languages, English, Japanese, German and Russian by Ohmsha, Ltd. that compiled this dictionary.

The editor initiated this work in the spring of 1957. It has taken almost seven years to complete the entire work because it had to be done in addition to school affairs.

In addition to customary technological terms in general Electrical Engineering, including Electronics, this dictionary contains terms from basic sciences such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as well as from Nucleonics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture and Economics, not to mention the terms used at conferences. Furthermore, as much as possible, entries were also made for the verbs, adjectives and adverbs that are expected to appear frequently in general engineering literature. As a result, this dictionary contains over 25, 000 vocabulary entries, and without a doubt will also be able to serve as both a Nucleonics and a Mechanical Engineering Dictionary.

However, due to insufficient references, the editor regrets that some words were not entered in all four languages. Further study is required to complete this dictionary.

Individual users of this dictionary are sincerely requested by the editor to relay their opinions on this dictionary and to point out any mistakes for future reference. The editor shall be very pleased if this dictionary should prove helpful to electrical engineering researchers, businessmen, and those who are engaged in foreign trade.

All technological terms have been entered first in English in strict alphabetical order, and then in Japanese, German and Russian, in that order. An Index enabling users to find entries in any of the other three languages besides English has been made following the main body, and words in Japanese, German and Russian have been arranged in order of either the Japanese syllabary or alphabet. There are Supplements which provide a list of customary abbreviations and units in the four languages.

The editor would like to take this opportunity to express his deep appreciation for the assistance and cooperation rendered by Lecturer Hajime Yamada, Shinshu University, in Russian language, Assistant Professor Kazuo Iwai, ditto, in Mathematics, Professor Kenkichi Sat6, ditto, in Civil Engineering and Dr. Yasuo Komamiya, the Electrotechnical Laboratory, who has furnished this editor with invaluable references in Electronic Computers. In addition, the editor would like to express appreciation to Mr. Tomosuke Hayashi and Dr. J unichi N agamura, the Electrotechnical Laboratory and the 37 others listed below for their assistance extended to him in publishing this dictionary.
