Happy New Year and welcome to our 2019 spring programme! This season we bring to you quite possibly one of the most dynamic programmes since we opened back in 2015.

We start the season with a NT Live broadcast of The Tragedy of King Richard The Second on Tuesday 15 January starring Simon Russell Beale. Speaking of which, he will be in person at The Quarry Theatre on 10 February as part of the Sharnbrook Mill’s Reverie: The Life & Loves of Debussy!

The winner of Britain’s Got Talent, Lost Voice Guy, returns with his brand new touring show ‘I’m only in it for the Parking’ on Monday 25 March. Be aware that this is close to selling out! Other highlights for us are ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’ (Sunday 3 March), which will have (for the first time at The Quarry) BSL interpretation at the 2.00pm performance. We hope to have more performances with interpretation so do look out for these in the coming months. We also have the utterly hilarious Tom Neenan (writer of Mash Report, Mock The Week and The Last Leg) with his Edinburgh 2018 hit ‘It’s Always Infinity’ on Friday 26 April… highly recommended by the Quarry Director!

Many thanks once again for your continued support of our theatre and I hope you enjoy the season ahead. Remember to check the website occasionally as this printed programme can be subject to change.

Simon Russell Beale plays Shakespeare’s Richard II, broadcast live from the stage of London’s Almeida Theatre in this visceral new production about the limits of power.

Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the King’s divine right to rule.

Directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins (Little Revolution, Almeida and Absolute Hell, National Theatre).

The Ephebe Chorus of Ancient Greek TheatresMonday 28 January, 6.30pm

The role of the chorus in ancient Greek tragedy was performed by ephebes: young Athenian men, idealised for being in the prime of their physical lives, who would soon embark on two years of compulsory military service.

Drawing on Dr Shüler’s recent publication ‘The Greek Tragic Chorus and Its Training for War’, from War and Theatrical Innovation, this lecture begins by arguing that tragic choral training and performance functioned as a surrogate military training for these young men. Furthermore, the lecture introduces Dr Shüler’s current research into how same-sex desire from the predominantly adult male citizen audience might inform their reading of the ephebe’s dancing body.

Good DogTuesday 5 February, 7.30pm

Mum’s promised him that bike so even when school or home life bites, he knows to keep his chin up, his head down and his shirt clean. No harsh word, no sudden push to the ground will distract him from growing up to be a good man. Because in the end, everyone who’s good gets what they deserve. Don’t they?

Set during the early noughties, good dog tells the story of growing up in a multi-cultural community, and the everyday injustices that drive people to take back control.

Delicately observed and fearlessly told by writer Arinze Kene (actor in Netflix’s Crazyhead, BBC’s Eastenders, Channel 4’s Youngers, West End smash Girl from the North Country, and Misty at Bush Theatre), good dog embarks on its second national tour following its acclaimed première in spring 2017.

Splendid Productions present this ancient, epic, murderous tale of family, history, vengeance and honour.

Condensing Aeschylus’s classic trilogy into an hour, the cast of three retell the story of King Agamemnon, his queen Clytemnestra, and their children, Iphigenia, Electra and Orestes. A legendary family born to power, but destined to rip itself apart in a bloody cycle of tragedy.

Splendid’s new adaptation explores the place where rage meets justice in an artful, political, physical, musical, entertainingly furious – and furiously entertaining - piece of theatrical magic.

“Imagine Greek drama performed by The Three Stooges on speed and you’ll have some idea of what this production was like... a matchless way of introducing ancient theatre to the young.”

The record-breaking beatboxer and collaborator with Ed Sheeran, Björk and Damon Albarn turns electronic singer-songwriter on his album tour, blending his innovative live-looping and breathtaking beatboxing with epic synths, crushingly honest lyrics and lush electronic layers. Massive Attack meets James Blake.

Simon Shlomo Kahn knows how it feels to be on top of the world. For over a decade, the genre-defying, award-winning, recording-breaking beatboxer, producer and live-looper has set new standards for his craft.

As Shlomo, he burst in to the mainstream collaborating with Björk and performed with famous fans from Damon Albarn, Lily Allen and Jarvis Cocker to Imogen Heap, Martha Wainwright and Rudimental. As the first ever World Looping Champion, he taught his friend Ed Sheeran some tricks. He was Artist in Residence at London’s Southbank Centre for years, has played the main stages at Glastonbury more times than he remembers, won rave reviews for his autobiographical one-man shows, and even had a feature film made about him.

Come into the forest; dare to change your state of mind.

Director Kimberley Sykes (Dido, Queen of Carthage) presents a riotous, exhilarating version of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, broadcast live from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Rosalind is banished, wrestling with her heart and her head. With her cousin by her side, she journeys to a world of exile where barriers are broken down and all can discover their deeper selves.

Berk’s Nest in association with Ebdon Management present

Tom Neenan: It’s Always InfinityFriday 26 April, 7.30pm

Quarry Theatre Director’s Edinburgh Fringe 2018 pick! Highly recommended.

Tom’s girlfriend has vanished… So he has done what any right-minded man (and “theatre-maker”) would do in this situation, and turned his search for her into an “important” piece of “art”. Come “witness” it. (Nobody went missing in the creation of this show.)

It’s Always Infinity is a narrative-driven character comedy show about toxic masculinity and the questionable role of the male creator, presented by a version of Tom who sees himself as ‘one of the good guys’ but is anything but. It combines projection, storytelling and character comedy to tell a story where ‘Tom’ reveals what an awful person he is.

Tom Neenan is the writer of The Mash Report, A Girl’s Guide to TV, Mock The Week (BBC2), The Last Leg (Channel 4), Spotlight Tonight, The News Quiz, The Now Show (BBC Radio 4). He’s also the writer & star of Tom Neenan’s The Hauntening (BBC Radio 4)

“Clever, elegantly constructed, and builds to a twist that you really won’t see coming”

TELEGRAPH

“A sharply-scripted character study… an elegant show that builds to a wonderful comic twist”

CHORTLE

“A razor-sharp hour of character comedy”

Bedford School Modern Languages Department Presents

YermaFriday 26th & Saturday 27 April, 7.30pm

Spanish language with live translation

Performed by students of Bedford School & Bedford Girls’ School

Young couples have everything to look forward to.

A few years enjoying each other’s company before finally bringing a new life into the world. This is all that Yerma desires. But she has not been blessed with a child and, as years of childless marriage turn into decades, her obsession with motherhood grows.

Federico García Lorca’s most famous work Yerma explores the plight of a young wife desperate to conceive, and the bitterness that mounts when desires are thwarted and dreams are slowly crushed by the passing of time.

Summer SEASON 2019 On sale now on the website

RADIO ACTIVESaturday 25 May, 7.30pm

Angus Deayton (Have I Got News For You, One Foot In The Grave, Nighty Night), Helen Atkinson Wood (Blackadder, The Young Ones, QI), Michael Fenton Stevens (Benidorm, My Family) and Philip Pope (Who Dares Wins, Chelmsford 123, Only Fools and Horses) reunite to take classic scripts from the award-winning BBC Radio 4 show on the road following a sell-out and critically-acclaimed run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Among other classic characters, expect to catch up with long-suffering radio host Mike Channel, original foodie Anna Daptor, and the accident-prone Martin Brown, as well as the cast’s original musical creations, responsible for such parody bands as The Hee Bee Gee Bees and Status Quid.

ASHLEY BLAKER AND IMRAN YUSUF: PROPHET SHARINGWednesday 29 May, 7.30pm

Two great religions. Two great comedians. The descendants of Abraham may have gone their separate ways but now stand-up comedian friends Ashley Blaker and Imran Yusuf – both stars of their own BBC shows – are joining forces in the most unlikely double act since Kermit and Miss Piggy (who neither Ashley and Imran can eat!) Originally brought together by a passion for the same football team, the pair are travelling the UK uniting people of every faith and none for an evening of laughter.
