“Summer suns are glowing over land and sea” At last we have had a taste of summer. When the sun shines we all feel so much better both physically and mentally. This made me think of the many things which can lift our spirits even if the sun is not shining – a baby’s smile, a child’s laughter, a chat over a cup of tea with a really good friend, a favourite piece of music, a beautiful view. I am sure you

can think of many more examples which raise your spirits. Our God designed a wonderful universe which He entrusted to us to care for and enjoy but we have been poor stewards over the centuries and are only beginning to realise that we need to do more to protect the environment and the many species of animals. As it is now one of the main holiday seasons I hope that if you get away you will be able to appreciate some of the wonders that this world has to offer – inspired buildings, beautiful views, and different cultures. Whether you have an active or a relaxing holiday I hope that you will return to Abbey Hill much refreshed in body, mind and spirit with plenty to share with others. I wish you all a safe and happy July and August whether at home or away. May God richly bless us all at this time. Winnie.

Commitment for Life Update - ZIMBABWE

How does your garden grow? An exciting scheme run by Dabane Trust, a CforL/Christian Aid partner, involves solar-powered water pumps helping communities to establish thriving market gardens. We’re pleased to report that the gardens continue to flourish. In Ntandokazulu, 70% of the land is under cultivation, compared to 40% before the solar-powered pump was installed. The farmers now produce a diverse range of crops including green leafy vegetables, onions, beetroots, tomatoes and carrots. Ethel Ndebele told us how her life has changed: “I have regained my health and weight as I have a nutritious and balanced diet from my own garden.”She has just harvested a bumper crop of maize, which is the first time that maize has ever grown at this time of year. Successes and lessons learned. Dabane Trust has now provided solar-powered water pumps to rural women in 18 irrigation schemes. People who had previously given up growing crops because they struggled with carrying heavy loads of water over great distances have been able to return to farming. “Watering our gardens using solar-powered engines has been such a relief,” explains Shylet Siziba, who grows a range of vegetables in Asenzeni Garden, Gwanda. “We no longer spend excessive hours drawing water; the pump does it for us.” The past few months have shown that some of the pumps are too small for the gardens they are irrigating. All the units were installed with 0.5 horse-power pumps. Dabane Trust would like to replace some of the pumps with at least one or two horse-power pumps, which would cost an extra $250 per pump. But, as Shylet explains, even the smaller pumps have been invaluable in saving the women time. “We now have free time for other chores and for our family.”

Christian Aid This year Abbey Hill managed to collect a total of £1435.96, the total for the whole of Kenilworth was £12641.

Considering all the other appeals going on at the same time (Nepal, Comic Relief to name but two) this is a splendid amount. Well done to everyone involved.

Bishop of Birmingham appointed as new Convenor of Lords

Spiritual

The Bishop of Birmingham, David Urquhart, has been appointed by

the Archbishop of Canterbury as Convenor of the Lords Spiritual. A

former BP executive with a degree in business studies, Bishop David

takes over the role of coordinating the work of the 26 bishops in the

House of Lords with immediate effect. He succeeds the Bishop of

Leicester, Tim Stevens.

Bishop David said: “A new Parliament and new Government brings

with it fresh challenges and opportunities. I look forward to playing

my part in helping frame the response of the Bishops’ Benches to the

legislative programme, debates and discussions to come over the

next five years.”

Miscellaneous observations:

~ I’m supposed to respect my elders, but it’s getter harder and

harder for me to find one now.

~ If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

~ A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train

stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

~ Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for

President and 50 for Miss America?

~ To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is

research.

~ In filling out an application, where it says, “In case of emergency,

notify ...” I answered, “a doctor.”

~ ~ I didn’t say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
