PICNIC CONCERT Saturday 8th Dec @ 2PM!

JOEL FAFARD: Canadian multiple award-winning guitarist and singer/songwriter is in South

Africa to appear in a series of shows for Tony Cox’s International Guitar Night South Africa.

See www.internationalguitarnight.co.za for all show times and booking details.

Joel Fafard performs Southern roots and blues classics with the soul of a purist and the

showmanship of a seasoned entertainer. He sings with the sexy, sandpapered-sounding vocal

style of the new-generation bluesman. He tells his hilarious between-song stories with the

confidence of a late show host Delivering his monologue and when he lets rip a solo on his

resonator guitar, it’s easy to hear how he earned both a Juno nomination and a Western

Canadian Music Award for his skills on the axe.

‘Fafard has begun to set himself apart from the legions of folksy Prairie singer-songwriters with the sort of instrumental

prowess you'd expect from a fingerstyle deity. His style isn't overly busy, but there are moments of pure genius’ - Bartley

Kives, Winnipeg Free Press

TONY COX: Multiple SAMA award-winning guitarist Tony Cox returned to

South Africa after 2 years away touring and performing around the world and

in that time has developed a loyal fan base far and wide, particularly in the UK

and Canada where he performs annually. Known throughout South Africa as

one of its finest acoustic guitarists, Cox's shows are filled with humour and

stories from his life that often reduce his audience to fits of laughter and then

gasps of amazement at the sheer power of his guitar playing. Do not pass up

the opportunity of witnessing for yourself just why this guitarist regularly

moves foreign audiences from Italy to Canada, from the USA to Scotland, to

jump to their feet shouting for more...

'Phenomenally talented' – What's On Cape Town – July 2011 'The strength and precision of what emerges from this man's

Mervyn Davis guitar is quite breathtaking' Andrew Smith, The Press and Journal, Scotland, Jan 2010

MILES SIEVWRIGHT : Miles Sievwright draws that most delicate of lines between a

headlong plunge of feeling and the conscience of shrewd realism, an ambivalence of

fugitive content which makes his music no lazy consumable for the listener. Both

contemplative and restless for the errant and visceral, his music confronts the heart

without the keening schmaltz of she-done-me-wrong lament, but searches for genuine

answers in the thorny passages and inviting cul-de-sac’s of the interior’s beguiling

maze. Cobbling the sylphlike finger picking of a sunnier Nick Drake, the vaulting

textures of Jeff Buckley’s boho-cool and some idiosyncratic takes on the acoustic

songbook, Sievwright is blue-blooded nu-folk with as much substance as he has style.

And that’s a lot.

Opening the Picnic Concert are Guest artists: Christine Weir and the Flying

Lizards: Christine Weir and the Flying Lizards – aka Richard and Jonathan Tait,

perform a folk/rock set which pays tribute to such greats as Shawn Colvin, Leonard

Cohen, Joan Baez, Eva Cassidy, as well as some haunting original tunes. Golden

voiced Christine Weir, who is well-known for her work in the award-winning “Not the

Midnight Mass” will be on lead vocals with The Flying Lizards providing sterling

guitar accompaniment, vocal harmonies and beautiful solo work.

This event is one of our community’s largest fundraising events of the year, a significant portion of the funds raised are used for fee relief for our community, support of the school’s wish list and support of our sister

schools.

costs, to ensure the success of the day.

Entertainment R 18 000,00

Material R 3 000,00

Tables and chairs R 5 000,00

Cold drinks &

water stock for class stall R 5 000,00

Staff wages R 4 000,00

The sponsor pad will have 20 places for sponsor contact details and logos at a cost of R 2 000 per sponsor place. The sponsor pad will be a free give-away to ticket buyers on entrance and based on last year’s attendance figures, we are estimating 4,000 people will attend this event. Some days summer is here in full force, and the garden seems to rest in stillness as it waits for the heat of the day to pass. And then

a cool day arrives, and some welcome rain and the plants can soak this in and revitalise. The first of the summer fruits have

arrived – yesterday we picked our first tomato, and there is gem squash hiding under some leaves waiting to be discovered. The

granadillas are growing out of their intricate flowers, and arti-chokes are dotted all over the garden. Visit the Outdoor

Classroom to see a huge artichoke in flower, calling to the bees

and the beetles with it’s sweet scent and purple plumage.

Thank you!

The Estate Team would like to say a very spe-cial thank you to Saskia Johnson for her initia-tive in tackling the flower beds around the front of the school. Together with a team of gardeners Saskia pruned, weeded and fertilised the areas bordering the car park and tuckshop. This took a significant load off the Estate Gardeners who were short of manpower due to injuries. Thank

you Saskia!
