Let the Dialogue BeginWOSU is excited to announce a new collaboration with the OSU John Glenn College of Public Affairs to develop a series of public forums through 2018 on interesting, topical issues. The Glenn College is committed to inspiring and developing students to become leaders who can handle complex issues and make change a reality in civic life. Their mission dovetails nicely with WOSU’s goal to enrich lives through unique experiences and content that informs and inspires.

We kick off the first Dialogue conversation on March 6th at 6 pm at the Fawcett Center Auditorium with NPR’s Sam Sanders coming to Columbus to lead a discussion with guests and the audience on “The New Age of Entrepreneurship.”

This first Dialogue special will be live streamed online and broadcast later on WOSU Ohio (34.2), but the fun will be in actually being there to meet Sam Sanders, the host of It’s Been a Minute, airing on 89.7 NPR News Sundays at 10am. If you miss the gathering, look for more to come as we build more experiences and programming with Trevor Brown and his team at the Glenn College throughout 2018!

Q: Why did you choose 89.7 NPR News?

NE: I wanted to move to a bigger city and work in a newsroom where I could spend more of my time following long-term stories. Columbus is different from the other places I’ve lived. But the newsroom staff was warm and welcoming and they seemed excited about the kind of work I want to do.

Q: What guides you as a journalist?

NE: Storytelling. I really, really love tackling a subject you’ve already heard about 1,000 times before and finding a way to reveal something new or portray it in a different light.

Q: What’s the most interesting story you’ve covered?

NE: It’s tough to pick one so I’ll just go with the first. In 2014, Florida wound up in court over its congressional and state senate district maps. For two years, I followed the fight through the courts and legislature. The day-to-day coverage was unwieldy, but it was a crash course in nuts and bolts explanatory journalism.

Q: What’s an Ohio story you can’t wait to cover?

NE: One of things I really enjoy is breaking down government policy and then finding people it directly affects. Health care, environment, and agriculture beats have been good places to find stories so I’ll probably start there.

Q: You moved from warm, sunny Florida to cold, gray Columbus; how have you adjusted to the weather?

NE: I have coats, ill-fitting boots, and gloves so getting to work is just fine, and I’ve got a pile of books and a Netflix account so hibernating until spring should be fine, too.

Q: You’re a native of California and have a degree from Florida State…you know you have to root for the Buckeyes, right?

NE: Well, I went to UC Santa Cruz first, so I’ll always be Banana Slug at heart. Good news is UCSC doesn’t have a football team, so I guess y’all are safe for now.

The American Sound

March is Women’s History Month, and all month The American Sound will showcase music by women composers. Enjoy brilliant musical gems by some of today’s most prominent women composers, including Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw performing her own hauntingly beautiful arrangement of spirituals with the Calder Quartet, selections from Melissa Dunphy’s astonishing Norse-inspired songs

Hervararkviða, A Jazz Nocturne by “the girl Gershwin” Dana Suesse and the sparkling Sapphire for saxophone and wind ensemble by Catherine McMichael. And be sure to watch Classical 101’s blog for special online features with some of these composers. Celebrate Women’s History Month with host Jennifer Hambrick and The American Sound, 6pm Saturdays and 7pm Tuesdays.

Symphony Showcase

Symphony Showcase also marks the important contributions of women this month with five programs featuring notable conductors. Hear American conductors Marin Alsop, JoAnn Falletta and Jeannette Sorrell with the orchestras they lead or, in Sorrell’s case, founded. We’ll also travel across the pond to revisit two important British conductors…Jane Glover with the London Mozart Players and Iona Brown with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Women wield the baton this month on Symphony Showcase, Thursday nights at 7pm.

Musica Sacra

Palm Sunday is March 25 and Musica Sacra will feature a performance of the sublime Brahms Requiem with Marin Alsop leading the Leipzig Radio Choir and Symphony. Join host Christopher Purdy for Musica Sacra every Sunday night at 8pm.
