Electrostatic interference:Don’t let it ruin your test!

Inaccurate test results canlead to costly mistakes.For years, maintenance engineers haveknown there’s a problem with testingpower apparatus in a substation: electro-static interference due to energized conductors. In fact, it’s the leading causeof inaccurate test results and can lead to erroneous and costly maintenancedecisions.

Test instrument manufacturers have tried to compensate for this problem, but theirattempts have been largely ineffectivebecause the interference level is never constant in the substation. Even automatedinterference cancellation techniques cannotkeep up with the fluctuations in the inter-ference level. And because the test signalis so small in some cases, even a slightfluctuation in interference can lead toinvalid results.

The M4100 eliminatesinterference problemsonce and for all.The M4100 uses a patented techniquecalled Line Frequency ModulationTM, in which the measurement is made at a frequency above and below the system frequency. This method eliminates theeffect of varying electrostatic interference.As a result, you get highly accurate andrepeatable measurements, and even a small change in the measurement can beused reliably for diagnostic purposes.

Generates its own clean signal for the most reliable results The accuracy of test results is directlyrelated to the quality of the test signal.While most test instruments use avail-able power lines or portable generatorsto generate the output test signal, theM4100 uses an internal waveform gener-ator to produce its own precise sine wavetest signal. As a result, the M4100 pro-duces reliable results and stable readings– thus the quality of the power source isnot an issue.

Turns Ratio Testing to detect shorted turns orwinding damage With the addition of the TTR Capacitor, the M4100can measure the turns ratio of power transformersat potentials up to 10 kV.

Detect Winding Movement Use the M4110 Leakage Reactance Module to per-form short circuit impedance tests on transformers– a vital tool in diagnosing winding deformation.

Test at potentials greater than 12kV The M4120 External Reference Module allows themeasurement circuit of the M4100 to be used withan external power supply and reference capacitor totest at voltages greater than 12 kV.

Test large specimens The Type C Resonating Inductor is an adjustable reactor designed to extend the charging currentrange of the M4100 to test larger apparatus.
