About 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes

Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 35% to 60% chance of developing diabetes in the next 10–20 years.

95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.

Who is Affected?

25.8 million people or 8.3% of the U.S. population.

Diagnosed - 18.8 million people.

Undiagnosed - 7 million people.

Clark County

The 2006 Clark County rate of adults diagnosed with diabetes was 8% which is similar to national rates.

In 2006, students diagnosed with diabetes ranged from 4-6% among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders.

Youth & Type 2

During 2002–2005, 3,600 youth were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes annually.

Type 2 Risk Factors

Over age 45. A family history of diabetes. Certain racial and ethnic groups (e.g., Non-Hispanic

Blacks, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and American Indians and Alaska Natives)

Women who had gestational diabetes, or who have had a baby weighing 9 pounds or more at birth.

Overweight . Lack of regular exercise. Low HDL cholesterol or high triglycerides, high blood

pressure. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and/or impaired

fasting glucose (IFG).
