DIABETES MELLITUS

Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot make or cannot use insulin properly

Types of Diabetes Type 1: The type where a person is fully unable to make insulin. The patient depends on insulin administration.It is diagnosed mostly during childhood, and so often called: Juvenile DiabetesType 2:Type 2 diabetes also called non-insulin-

dependent diabetes mellitus or adult-onset diabetes

Gestational Diabetes: This type is characterized by hyperglycemia, or raised blood sugar, which is first recognized during pregnancy. Usually goes away after the baby is born.

TYPE 2 DIABETES

-Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes

-It is Responsive to oral hypoglycemic medications

-Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, as well as the Elderly

WITH DIABETES MELLITUS,

- The stomach empties 50% faster than normal

-Muscle cells and other tissues are resistant to insulin-Liver puts too much sugar into

the blood-Pancreas can’t make enough

insulin
