Survey Requirements

- During Pre-Construction meeting

- Contractor should receive a survey packet with template for:

- Survey Statement of Work (SSOW)

- Survey and Quality Control Plan (SQCP)

- Weekly Project Status Report

- Final Project Report

- It would be fitting for the Contractor to submit the SSOW and

the SQCP for their project prior to the Pre-Survey meeting.

- The DIA Survey Section needs to review and approve.

- This process could take approximately a week or more.

Pre-Survey Meeting

– No survey work can commence until the SSOW and the

SQCP is approved.

– Best to be completed prior to the Pre-Survey Meeting.

– During this meeting, the DIA Survey Section will provide all

necessary data.

– NGS datasheets. (Do not retrieve them from NGS’ website)

– Current projection parameters.

– Coordinate list.

– Map of the points.

Page 4: DIA Survey Requirements - Denver International Airportbusiness.flydenver.com/bizops//documents/BIM_Survey_Requirements.pdfLevel of Development Matrix ─Organized by UNIFORMAT II –

Control Network

– Contractor set their control network for their project

– Submit all field notes, raw files and reports to the DIA

Survey Section for review.

– Raw files must be read by Trimble Business Office (TBC).

– Reports must be in MS Word or MS Excel format

– Control Network must have DIA Survey Sections approval

before any survey work can begin.

What is BIM?

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital

representation of physical and functional characteristics of a

facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for

information about a facility forming a reliable basis for

decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from

earliest conception to demolition.

- USNBIMS

*

BIM is an approach to design, construction and facilities

management that makes the information generated at each

step more usable and accessible at every other step.

Page 10: DIA Survey Requirements - Denver International Airportbusiness.flydenver.com/bizops//documents/BIM_Survey_Requirements.pdfLevel of Development Matrix ─Organized by UNIFORMAT II –

What does BIM at DIA mean?

─ All design work is to be delivered to DIA in an .rvt format for work and

as Civil 3D generated .dwgs for horizontal/civil work.

─ Contractors follow a VDC (Virtual Design & Construction) process for

laying out and planning their construction path.

─ Commissioning of all DIA systems designated as Assets is required.

─ DIA uses the final Reconciled Model to feed into our BIM database.

─ BIM database connects to our GIS and Maximo Asset Management

systems.

─ BIM database is in a neutral SQL database, enabling it to connect to

a number of other systems for future uses such as our condition

assessment program, commercial tenant management, and other

programs

─ When a new project occurs in an area with existing BIM work, the

team will have better information on existing conditions than

previously available. *

BIM Software

─ 3 Software Platforms

─ Autodesk Revit – Buildings and building systems

─ Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D – Site and site utilities

─ Autodesk Navisworks – Used for Spatial Coordination & Clash Detection

Software - Revit - About

─ Modeling instead of drafting|

─ Live schedules reflect actual counts, lengths, areas and volumes of elements, rooms and spaces in the project

─ Change something in one view and it is automatically updated in others. i.e. change door number on plan and it is updated in schedule, move a door in plan, it is reflected in elevation and sections

Page 14: DIA Survey Requirements - Denver International Airportbusiness.flydenver.com/bizops//documents/BIM_Survey_Requirements.pdfLevel of Development Matrix ─Organized by UNIFORMAT II –

Software - Revit - About

─ 4 Versions

– Architecture

– MEP

– Structure

– Revit - Three Previous in One

─ Not Backwards Compatible

─ Cannot open a Revit 2014 file in Revit 2013. Once you open a Revit 2013 file in 2014, it becomes a 2014 file permanently

─ DIA Upgrades versions first quarter each year

Page 15: DIA Survey Requirements - Denver International Airportbusiness.flydenver.com/bizops//documents/BIM_Survey_Requirements.pdfLevel of Development Matrix ─Organized by UNIFORMAT II –

Software - Civil 3D - About

– Surface and Site Utility modeling

– Very similar to standard AutoCAD using Object Based

Data Tables

– Live schedules reflect actual counts, lengths, areas and

volumes of earth, pipe, equipment, etc.

– Change something in one view and it is automatically

updated in others. i.e. change grading on plan and it is

updated in schedule

Software – Spatial Coordination/Clash Detection

─ Navisworks - 3 Versions

– Freedom - Free viewer. Good for most consultants

– Simulate - Premium Design Suites. Create/Track Clash Views

– Manage - Ultimate Design Suites. Automated Clash Detection

tools

– BIM 360 Glue – Cloud hosted option for Spatial

Coordination/Clash Detection with more advanced tracking

features

– Revit - Spatial Coordination can be done within Revit during

Design, though it is not recommended

Software – Other Recommended Tools

─ SysQue

─ Model Review Add-In

─ BIM 360 Field

─ Bluebeam

Wetware / Users

No hardware or software can compensate for a user knowledge base shortfall, while a knowledgeable user can get around many hardware and software limitations ─ Train existing staff

─ Hire new staff

─ Subconsultant

– In-House

– Out-of-House

─ Which approach? ALL!

Analytics & BIM Deliverables Tracking

─ Every proposal is reviewed for conformance to DIA standards

─ BIM model is evaluated at each deliverable

─ RFI's, Change Orders, Bulletins, etc. tracked

─ All reviews are documented and recorded in our cross referenced database for project and full project team evaluation, including internal DIA performance
