This morning is at leisure to wanderthrough the cobblestone streets of Cuzcoexploring the cathedral, museums orshopping for local handicrafts. Later thisafternoon we depart by horse, riding to thenearby ruins of Kenko, Tambomachay andPucapucara. Our final destination isSacsayhuaman, a spectacular mountaintopfortress overlooking Cuzco. After breakfast we depart for Chacan,located at 3,500 meters / 11,500 feet. We’llbe greeted by a local shaman who will leadus through a spiritual ceremony of Quechuarituals. Later this morning we hike up to theChacan mountain range and set up topropes to climb the limestone walls, rangingfrom 15 to 45 feet or 5 to 14 meters inheight. There are easy-moderate-challengeroutes to accommodate all climbing levels.Early afternoon we return to Cuzco andhave the remainder of the day at leisure, anespecially good time to explore thenumerous artisan markets in the streets. We switch gears today and head to the “putin” on the Urubamba River, rated class II-IIIon the difficulty scale. Donned in lifejacketsand helmets, we cast off the shoresnavigating 6-person rafts through theboulder-choked current. We take out beforelunch and feast on a snack beside the river.We’ll then head to the town of Pisac, famousfor its hilltop ruins and artisan market. We’llhave lunch in this village and explore thetown on foot. Today is a favorite for those in search of arich cultural experience. We start the daywith a visit to the Pisac archaeological site.Once we've explored the ruins we'll set offon a 3 hour hike to Pisac town. We'llwander through the local market ofhandicrafts in Pisac and then have lunch intown. Afterwards we'll drive tothe community of Taray where we'll tradehiking boots for bicycles and cyclealongside the Urubamba River throughan agricultural region. We'll ride past cropsof potato and quinoa. After 18 km / 11 miwe'll reach the village of Huycho where ourdriver and vehicle will be awaiting totransfer us back to Pisac for the night. Today’s fat tire adventure is an absolutelythrilling day of single and doubletrack ridingin the Andean Highlands. We’ll start in thetown of Chinchero, known for its handicraftmarket. From here we’ll cut along amountainous trail zigzagging past colonialhaciendas where farmers are frequentlyseen herding their livestock. We climb tothe ruins of Moray, famous for the circularterraces and then glide down a dusty roadto the Maras salt works located at 3,379meters / 11,086 feet. These salt mines havecaptured salt water from a natural springbefore pre-Inca times. After lunch in thetown of Urubamba, we’ll drive toOllantaytambo and walk up the steps ofthis impressive fortress. This morning we set off by vehicle brightand early towards Huaran at 2,840 meters /9317 feet, a small village in the SacredValley and the start of the trek. We'll meetup with our pack llamas and begin ourbeautiful hike through the lush valley,following the gentle uphill route of theCancha Cancha River. It will take usapproximately 5 hours to reach thepicturesque village of the same namewhere we'll set up camp for the night at3,940 meters / 12,925 feet.  Hiking Distance: 8km / 5miHiking Duration: 4 - 5 hoursAscent: + 1,100m / 3,608ftAccommodation: TentMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After having a hot breakfast, we'll leave thecampsite and begin our steep ascent toPachacutec Pass at 4,700 meters / 15,416feet, the highest point of the trek. From thetop of the pass there are spectacular viewsof the surrounding mountains, valleys andPachacutec Lake. After the pass, we'llcontinue our trek and descend into the nextvalley to reach Quiswarani village at 3,700meters / 12,138 feet, where we'll spend thenight. Along the route, the scenery isdramatic with glacial lakes, waterfalls, andsnow-peaked mountains. This area is alsorich in birdlife and there is a possibility ofseeing Andean ibis and geese. In theevening, we'll enjoy traditional Peruvianfood and spend time with the local childrenand women weavers. Overnight camping. We have another early start this morning!We'll begin with a 3 hour ascent to reachHuillquijasa Pass at 4,400 meters / 14,560feet, the second highest pass of the trek. Theviews are impressive and well worth theeffort. We'll then descend towards the villageof Cuncani at 3,700 meters / 12,140 feetpassing turquoise lakes along the way. Thiswas the last refuge of the "Royal Panakas", anInca sect. Overnight camping. After breakfast, we'll walk down a fertilevalley, passing typical vegetation and highaltitude crops such as beans and potatoes.Along the trail we'll see native flowers suchas begonias and wild orchids. After walkingfor around 3 hours we arrive into Lares at3,230 meters / 10,594 feet, capital of thedistrict. Lares is a large village whose mainattraction are hot springs. We'll treatourselves to a well-deserved soak. We'llthen transfer 3.5 hours by bus to the townof Ollantaytambo to board the train toAguas Calientes, the gateway to MachuPicchu. We have a full day dedicated to exploringMachu Picchu. There is also the option toclimb Huayna Picchu, a young peakadjacent to Machu Picchu. If you are keento climb this, only a certain number ofpeople can climb Huayna Picchu a day aspermits are required. These permits sell outwell in advance and are subject toavailability at time of booking. The hike is achallenging one, but the views are wellworth the effort! A much less busyalternative is the Sun Gate, where the IncaTrail finishes. We highly recommend thisoption. Afterwards, our guide will give us atour of Machu Picchu explaining the historyand significance of the major sites. The tourtakes about 2 hours after which you willhave free time to explore the ruins on yourown. In the afternoon, after lunch in AguasCalientes, we'll take the train through theUrubamba valley destined for Cuzco.
