    A Tribute to Jaya

Born in 1945 to Hendrik and Jane Jayakody to a family of 6 siblings, Rathnasiri, more popularly known as ‘Jaya’ became the 'father' of his siblings at the tender age of 23 when his father passed away. Two years later when his mother passed away, Jaya became the head of the clan, responsible for everyone that bore his family name. Thus began Jaya's life's mission to be the 'Arakkha Deva' (god of protection) to anyone who needed his support.

However, Jaya was an invisible figure- always behind the curtain, always holding the helm. Wherever he went, Jaya 'made community' by bringing people together with his immense capacity to understand people, his kindness and generosity, his humility and his sense of fairness and that particular gift for making friends. These qualities made him an endear-ing personality respected by all.

Jaya never held caste, creed or race as makers for discrimination. During the riots of Black July of 1983, Jaya not fearing the wrath of hooligans gave protection to the Tamil cobbler who lived down his street, holding him safe in his home, hosting him as a guest.

He had scant regard for titles and positions. To Jaya a person was valuable to the extent he gave of himself. As such he never accepted positions in organisations opting to offer support, nameless, title-less.

However, in spite of all the accolades that could be bestowed on Jaya, the one that would please him most would be that ' he was a simple man'. Jaya wore simplicity as a crown.

    Soulful...

Nadanaanjali School of Dancing proudly staged its 25th annual con-cert on 19th May, 2018. Barathanatiyam lovers were taken to a won-derland by the mesmerising dancers. The rich cultural heritage which had descended over many thousands of years was once again in full bloom, under the skilful patronage of founder Guru Smt. Chitra Yogi Srikantha.

The first half of the performance, presenting classical items was vi-brant and the latter presenting folk dances was dynamic. However the show stealer was "Shiva Anjali", an exhilarating dance drama skilfully performed by senior and graduated students.

If that stole the show, what moved the soul was the dedication dance performed by the seniors for their guru. The guru's guru Smt. Balasundari, had choreographed and trained the seniors to stage a divine dance showing their love and respect to their teacher Smt.Chithra. The "Gurukulam" tradition was heart warming to watch.

May "Natarajan", pleased by the offerings of "Nadananjali" bless guru and shishyas through his blissful and joyful cosmic dance.

    Let peace prevail.

Dancers of Nadananjali have performed at 'Saralanga', the cultural show hosted by the Sinhala Association of Queensland.

Agricola Scientists Help Combat Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Sri Lanka

If you have recently visited Sri Lanka, you may have heard about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), which unfortunately has become a major health concern in rural communities. First noticed in the North Central Province several years ago, then traced in the Uva province, currently CKD has spread throughout several areas in Sri Lanka. Its detrimental effects have led to over tens of thousands of deaths, as well as hundreds of thousands of victims across the past two decades. The World Health Organisation stated that the dis-ease has killed approximately 20,000 people and diagnosed up to 400,000 people. Although there have been records of women and children subject to this disease, males, typically middle-aged farm-ers, have primarily fallen victim. Patients with CKD usually live approximately for 2 years after the initial diagnosis. The detrimental effects of the disease affect the lives of those victims, as well as their families and communities. Families, who are the victim of losing a loved one to CKD, especially if the primary breadwinner has de-ceased, most likely will face a range of social, emotional and financial difficulties.

While the root cause of this disease has not been traced yet, the quality and composition of drinking water in such areas is to blame. Based on evi-dence, scientists, researchers, and activists believe that polluted ground water; typically that from shallow wells is a plausible cause for CKD. Exposure to high concentrations of pollutants/toxins resulting from sub-stantial usage of substandard agro chemicals for farming has been preva-lent since the 1960s, and is believed to have contributed to water quality is-sues within these areas.

Local and international authorities have suggested implementing safe drinking water measures as an alternative source to prevent or ultimately minimise CKD. As a compromise, a team of scientists based in Australia, among many others, representing Agricola (Association of Sri Lankan Agricul-ture and Veterinary Science Graduates in Queensland) has stepped up to the challenge to derive a pragmatic, sustainable and reliable solution. A safe drinking water alternative will be developed using Australia’s advanced rain harvesting technologies. For more than 200 years, almost every rural community in Australia have success-fully used harvested rainwater for drinking purposes. Australia has the contemporary technologies and experience to collect, store and use rainwater as a potable water source. Based on Australian tech-nology, Agricola’s scientific expertise has designed and developed a reliable and safe rainwater harvesting system that matches Sri Lankan conditions.

This project is a collaboration between Agricola Queensland, Uni-versity of Peradeniya, Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum (LRF) and National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS). Two proto-types of rainwater harvesting system were constructed using Aus-

tralian standards at the Fac-ulty of Engineering, Univer-sity of Peradeniya, as well as in Badulla in collaboration with LRF. The water quality of these prototypes is being tested and the results so far indicate that the quality is comparable or better than the WHO recommended drinking water quality stand-ards (please see table 1) With the proven success, Agricola has initiated a pilot project for further testing and evaluation of this sys-tem using purposefully se-lected families in a CKD affected village in Badulla district and provided funding for con-structing of 15 rain water harvesting units. This pilot project will include the study of reliability of water supply, improvement of human health, change of community attitudes and socio-economics aspects as a result of consumption of rainwater for drinking. The findings and outcome of this project will be for-warded to the Sri Lankan Government and/or private enterprises for large scale implementation.

Agricola Queensland has raised funds for this project through several community activities in Brisbane. All attendees and spon-sorships for these events have contributed to raise funds for the Rainwater Harvesting Project.

If you would like to hear more about this project or if you are in-terested in supporting this project; please contact Agricola via [email protected]. If you wish, you could also donate a rain harvesting unit to a less fortunate family in a CKD affected area and help saving lives. We sincerely acknowledge all the gener-ous support received thus far and we look forward to what is still to come.

Request for Volunteers: The Policy Development Office of the Prime Minister’s Office, Sri Lanka

A message from the Head of Policy Development Office in Sri Lanka to the Sri Lankan community overseas.

22nd June 2018 H.E. Mr. Somasundaram Skandakumar High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia Your Excellency, The Policy Development Office (PDO) of the Prime Minister’s Office has openings for a few volunteers who are graduates of Sri Lankan origin of foreign universities looking for opportunities to gain skills and experience in the field of their interest. This may offer them the prospect to exchange their services for valuable work experience during their holidays or a break from studies, working with an active research community.

The selected candidates will be engaged as interns and will not be entitled to any remuneration, the period could vary from 3 to 6 months. Their presence will compliment a program of interns PDO already has established with graduates selected from the universities in Sri Lanka. We have also had a few volunteers in the past from outside Sri Lanka and the experience has been positive. We would be thankful if this opportunity is given wide publicity in your Newsletters and official web pages. You may also disseminate the message to any known student papers and Sri Lanka Associa-tions as they may find this to be of interest.

All prospective candidates who wish to have further information may be requested to contact us direct on email: [email protected]

I thank you for your cooperation on this matter. With my best regards.

    J. Charitha Ratwatte Head Policy Development Office

    Domestic Violence and Support Available

Domestic violence can take many forms including emotional, eco-nomic, physical abuse and threatening and coercive behavior. Below there are some examples of what domestic violence may look like.

Emotional abuse is when your partner doesn’t let you go out with friends, calls you names or swears at you. Economic abuse is when your partner makes it difficult for you to attend work or doesn’t allow you to make decisions about the household finances or misus-es money. Physical abuse is when your partner hits you, damages property or hurts your children or pets.

Threatening behaviour is when your partner makes you feel afraid by saying things or acting in a way that scares you. Coercive behav-iour is when your partner makes you sign documents you don’t un-derstand or against your wishes or forces or manipulates you to do things you don’t want to do.

Domestic violence also includes children seeing or hearing the abuse.

The Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 states that, regardless of gender, people affected by domestic violence are two people who are or were a couple, married, engaged, in a de fac-to relationship, the parents of a child, or in a legally recognized rela-tionship. Other relationships include family relationships and infor-mal care relationships.

For more information on domestic violence or free and confidential support, please contact the Immigrant Women’s Support Service on 3846 3490, Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. They can assist you to access free legal advice and other support. They provide free and confidential interpreters when required.

For emergencies, contact police on 000.

If you need safe accommodation contact DVConnect on 1800 811 811.

The Immigrant Women’s Support Service is funded by the Depart-ment of Child Safety, Youth and Women.

Somaweera: The Calm Man with Great Human Qualities

    By Dr. Nimal Sedera

A kind, soft spoken man was he. There was never a rush in his life. A man of few words and simplicity was his vision of life.

The great personality Somaweera Senanayake is no more. As one of his best friends, right now away from the motherland, I get over the grief moment by writing a few sentences not of his creative writing and Teledramas but thinking of his great human qualities.

Our friendship goes back to forty-one years to be precise. I recall meeting him for the first time at Lake House in the company of Dr. Edwin Ariyasasa. Our minds clicked, and a friendship began to grow so quickly that our families associated so dearly. Rupa his beloved wife, and two children, daughter Madubhashini, and son Akalanka were like our family members.

He is from a rural background, the son of an Ayurvedic doctor. I have joined him when he visited the two schools he studied to par-ticipate at special meetings and felicitations, the Seethawaka Maha Vidyalaya and the Rajasinghe Central College.

His greatest quality was his capacity to listen. He would allow the other person to finish talking and even ask ”Have you finished”. “I hate wearing shoes and coat and tie. It does not suit this country, our climate”, he said. We were born in the same month in different years 1943 and 1944. I was just a day early and a year ahead, so we arranged joint birthday celebrations sometimes.

He, like Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa and Dharmasiri Gamage, was a man I looked for advise in relation to my work with the National Youth Services Council pertaining to cultural activities. We travelled the country for such activities. We escaped death having attended a cultural project in Vavuniya during the LTTE days.

Best part of our association came when he invited me to join his team of journalists at Little Rose publications where he was ap-pointed the Editor in Chief. Anula de Silva and Muditha Kariyakarawana were the oth-er two editors. Udayakantha Warnasuriya, the film personality was our layout artist and Soma Hettiarachchi was our circulation Manager.

He was a wise man who was able to dele-gate responsibility and not mix-up friend-ship with work. There were times he was critical on my work and addressed me as if I was a stranger to him. “We can be a small company, but we can be an example to the industry” was his vision.

I spoke to his wife Rupa, Somaweera’s wife, and to Akalanka, his son after the news of the death. I reminded of a photograph that was by the dining table at Somaweera’s house at Embillawatta, Boralesgamuwa, taken with Akalanka and our two sons Daraka and Darshana on horsebacks in Nuwaraeliya when we made a fam-ily trip to World’s End. Akalanka replied “Yes it is still there”.

He was a quality Sinhala writer with seventeen novels to his credit and received national awards for some of the novels. He was a popular film script writer and no doubt the best of all television drama script writers of the era. “Palingumenike”,” Du Daruvo” and “Yashoravaya” stand out as best of the best. ”Sitha Nevena Katha” series is a landmark script writing power of Somaweera. Dr. Lester James Pieris directed some of his scripts. Two days before he was admitted to hospital we had a long conversation over the phone. He suffered from diabetes for many years specially with weak vision. He was an ardent Buddhist.

    May he attain Nibbana.
