High silicon aluminum die-cast blocksdo not require a steel or cast iron linerin the cylinder bore. Pure particles ofsilicon, about .001" (0,03 mm) indiameter, are dispersed in thealuminum alloy. To achieve a propersurface finish, the cylinders should beprepared so piston and rings contactonly silicon. Silicon is very hard, sothere will be very little wear in thecylinder bore. The aluminum’s functionis merely to “hold” the silicon particleswhich actually form the wall.

Excessively scored or worn cylinderscan be reconditioned to acceptoversize pistons. A special“Conditioning” operation is neededto remove aluminum from andbetween the silicon particles so thewall will be a silicon wall.

Lifter Bore Honing in V-6 and V-8Cylinder BlocksSpecial mandrels are available for honing lifter bores inV-type engines. The mandrels are extended length keywaytype. A keyway type mandrel is the best mandrel for thistype of bore because it adds stability for this hand honingoperation and also because of the typically large oil portsin the sides of the bore. The recommended power sourceis a 3/8" (10 mm) chuck capacity air drill with anapproximate speed of 250 rpm. Honing oil is required.
