Mans marriagedivides friends
Dear Annie: My hus-band, Rick, had been closefriends with Edward for 30years. We used to get togetherfrequently, and Edward wasalways kind and consider-
ate and someone we highlyrespected. Then, Edward gotengaged to Michelle.
I was pregnant at the time, and my doctor put me on bedrest because I had alreadybeen hospitalized once. Icould not travel out of statefor any of the fes-tivities. However,Rick was gonenearly every week-end attending theengagement party, bachelor party andwedding. He saidEdward was notacting like himselfduring these vis-
its, saying he wasuncharacterist i -cally inconsiderateand strange.
Two monthslater, I gave birth to a girl, and we invited Edwardand Michelle to the bap-tism. Edward called to saythey would not be attend-ing because Michelle washurt that I didnt come tothe wedding. She said myabsence meant I did not sup-port their marriage, and theyneeded time to heal fromthis insult. Michelle also wasoffended that Ricks weddingspeech did not make enough
mention of her.Rick and I were livid. Not
only did my doctor forbid mefrom traveling to the wed-ding, but Rick spent a longtime composing a thoughtful, funny and heartfelt speechand even delivered some of itin Michelles native language.Rick angrily confrontedEdward and disinvited themto the baptism. Edward thenclaimed it was a miscom-munication. When Edwardand Michelle announced thatthey were pregnant, we senta thoughtful baby gift, whichEdward and Michelle did notacknowledge.
Rick is determined torebuild the friendship. Hecalls Edward at least oncea month, but the calls areoften unanswered and unre-turned. Its been a year sincethe phone call, and Im stillfurious, but Rick is grieving.Edward does not deserve myhusbands loyalty and for-giveness, but for Ricks sake,I want them to reconcile. What can I do? -- Scornedand Angry
Dear Scorned: We are sosorry that Edwards marriagehas thrown a wrench into hisrelationship with Rick, butthese things happen. The only
one who can fix it is Edward.Be supportive of Rick bysympathizing without beingnegative about Edward orMichelle. Encourage newfriendships by introducingyourselves to other coupleswith young children. The bestthing you can do for your
husband is to help him moveforward one day at a time.
Dear Annie: I am a skilledprofessional and have beenunemployed for a year. I haveapplied for many positions via
online postings that are oftenanonymous. After sendingmy resume and cover letter, Iam frustrated that I never hearback. I have no idea whetherthey received my informa-tion or read it, and there is noway to follow up, as I have
no idea who theyare. I know theyprobably get a lot ofapplications, but ashort courtesy notewould be nice, evenif its thanks but nothanks. -- Oregon
Dear Oregon:We completelyagree. Unfortunately,
because these sitesdo not have a contactperson, no one feelsa personal obligationto respond. Even
an automated response say-ing your resume was receivedwould be a step in the rightdirection.
Dear Annie: SiblingSupport said her motheris always asking for moneyfor the younger siblings, butspends it on herself. Thenext time she has occasionto talk to her mother, sheshould open the conversationby saying, Mom, Im a littleshort this week. Could you
possibly lend me a few dol-lars? I guarantee this willnip those requests for helpin the bud without having torefuse her outright. SiblingSupport can then buy treatsfor the younger siblingsdirectly, leaving Mom outof the loop. -- St. Maarten,Dutch Caribbean

A discarded interest from the pastmight be resurrected and revitalized inthe year ahead, and it could turn out tobe surprisingly profitable. This will bedue not only to the correct timing, butto some new allies who know whattheyre doing.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) --A friend who is in need of a strongshoulder to cry on is likely to cometo you with some frustrating burdens.Fortunately, among all his or herpeers, you are the best one to lean on.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)-- Most of the effort you expend onbehalf of others will go unrewardedor unappreciated, even though youprobably wont mind. A few people, however, will offer thanks.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)-- Direct your creativity towardgratifying a personal objective thatyouve been fearful to try. Chancesare that what you do will be cleverand fun and will give you muchsatisfaction.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)-- Something that has caused younothing but frustration recently canbe taken care of if you make it yourprime target. If its a priority, you canwrap it up once and for all.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) --Be sure to acknowledge those who
assist you. Although youll be willingto work hard, the success of a projectis likely to be due in part to a fewothers who pitch in and help.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) --Although your goals might be a bitdifficult to achieve, the rewards theyoffer could be so enticing that theyllimpel you to at least try. Give thingsyour maximum effort.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)-- There is plenty of justificationfor your positive outlook. If your
hopes and expectations appear to bea bit high to others, dont let theirnegative thinking cause you to believeotherwise.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) -- Your chart shows manypossibilities for large gains at thistime. Thus, if you have to work hardfor what you hope to get, remember: itwill be well worth it.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)-- If you truly believe in your ideas, you shouldnt have any problemconvincing others of their worth --discuss their potential with possiblesupporters.
