LIONS CLUBS INTERATIONAL DISTRICT 410 B

District 410B January 2013 Issue 7

Helen Keller was a remarkable woman, born in 1880 and died

in 1968 at the age of 88. At age two, she contracted an illness

that left her blind, deaf, unable to speak, and was considered

backwards of intelligence. She lived in a dark and hopeless

world of her own, until age 7, when she was placed in the care

of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Through being taught letters

spelt out in her hand, she came to realise the correlation be-

tween those words and their meaning. From then on, using her

dogged persistence, she went on to bring forth her intellectual

and emotional abilities, being an avid learner, and despite the

social obstacles of her time, became the first deaf/blind person

to graduate from college. As an adult, she travelled the world,

campaigned for civil rights, world peace, human dignity and

women's rights, and authored many books and essays. She

became a prominent figure in her lifetime, whose accomplish-

ments attracted awe, respect, admiration and inspiration.

And what an inspiration she is, still today!

Welcome!

Bedfordview Christmas Meeting

Mass Ride—Toy run.

Page 3

Mass ride ended a fun-filled day in Benoni the toys were redistributed to needy children by Lions Service clubs—Lions Clubs Interna-tional.

Bedfordview Lions club held a different meeting—it was their annual year-end Christmas party meeting held at the home of PDG/LP Derek Edward.

We thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality – not to forget the wonderful meal provided.

LP Derek holds up the hospitality banner for DG Ivan to present to a club, at the end of his year in office who he feels made him feel the most wel-come and he enjoyed the most on his visits!

The following Clubs have already received this banner so far: Florida 2008/09; Pretoria City 2009/10; Standerton 2010/11; and Bedfordview 2011/12 Who will be next?

Lion Lionel Chasm had this to say:

“The Bethany house project, I can only say Wow!! I left Bethany House and felt as though I was going to burst with pride. The way in which the prospective club members all pulled together, the spirit of camaraderie and the standard of service shown would have made any club proud, and for a first major project it was simply phenomenal.

Edenvale Lions Improves Literacy!

Lions hand out

children books The Lions Club of Edenvale joined 65 children at the Normonde Home for HIV and Abandoned Children for lunch recently.

The visit was done in accordance with a year-long initiative called the read-ing programme, which was introduced by the Lions International president, Wayne A Madden.

The programme aims to improve literacy levels and promotes reading. Books were handed to each child by Lionesses Evelyn and Rita.

The books were also read to the children whilst they waited for their lunch.

For more information about Lions International and their various community projects, contact LP Marilyn on 011 609-9756.

107 Emergency services of Magaliesburg are always on standby to assist in medi-cal or other emergencies. The Lions wanted to thank them for the selfless and often dangerous work they do on our behalf, and so presented them with Christmas parcels to enjoy with their families. Centurion Lions Christmas party of note!

21 Ways to kill your club! We can learn from this... 16. If you’re asked to help, always say you don’t have time. 17. Never read any mailings or seek information. You might find out what’s going on. 18. If appointed to a position, never devote any time to it. Let someone else do it all.
