In Puerto Rico the Holidays begin the day after Thanksgiving, when people start placing adornments all over their homes. With great en-thusiasm families and friends reunite, traditional Holiday music is heard everywhere and decorative lights brighten the Island. You can almost smell the Christmas Spirit. Parrandas, (a more energetic Puer-torican version of the Christmas caroling), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Epiphany, and Las Octavitas are all traditionally celebrated in the Island. On December 24th Noche-buena, families reunite for dinner followed by a big party. During dinner, traditional foods like lechón asado (roasted pork), arroz con gandules (rice with pi-geon peas), and pasteles are served. Another tradi-tion is to serve Coquito (Puerto Rican coconut eggnog). After dinner, dancing to salsa and merengue starts and the party goes on until sunrise.

BOSS Community CleanupOn November 20th, 2010, the BOSS Program conducted a Community Cleanup along the perimeter fence line of Fort Buchanan, by Road 28. Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, CBWTU and MEPS Soldiers collected over 4,950 pounds of trash, nearly 2.5 tons of garbage. Thank you to all BOSS participants!

Annual Turkey BowlThe 3rd Annual Turkey Bowl: Marines vs. Army took place on Nov 24th at Maxie Williams Jr. Field. The Marines team had the lead from start to finish. The Army team was not scared and put up a fight against them. In the end the Marines defeated the Army 30 to 0. This year BOSS program joined forces with “Toys for Tots”. Game attendees brought a new unwrapped toy for a child. Toys will be distributed to kids in need.

dilla include “Surfer’s Beach”, “Table Tops”, “Gas Chamber”, “Las Ruinas”, and “Survival”.The city also boasts some of the most color-ful and vibrant festivities such as Three Kings Watch every January, San Antonio and Kite Fes-tival every April, Beach, Tuna, and Music Festi-val from May to July and the Patron Celebration held every October.

these risks, types of chocolate with a more bit-ter taste tend to have a higher concentration of these toxins. For instance, baker’s chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate, which is more dangerous than white chocolate. If your pet ingests chocolate, it is important that they are seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.Other Toxic Foods: Macadamia nuts, grapes, chewing gum with xylitol, unbaked yeast dough. Household Plants: Some holiday ornamental plants can cause ill-ness in your pet if ei-ther the leaves or the stems are ingested. Clinical signs caused by household plants can range from mild to severe depending on the type of plant involved. Ingestion of lilies is very serious and can lead to acute kidney failure. Mistle-toe can cause mild GI upset, vomiting, diar-rhea or liver failure and seizures. If your pet ingests these plants, they should be seen by a veterinarian. Poinsettia ingestion can be irritating to the mouth and stomach, resulting in mild GI upset and temporary loss of appetite. In rare cases, blisters may form in the animal’s mouth. These signs are typically self-limiting and do not require veterinary care. Christmas Trees: Tree ornaments can present a hazard to pets. There are a wide variety of orna-ments on the market, and some look very similar to pet toys (especially to cats). Most of these or-naments have hooks that can cause injury to the paws or inside of your pet’s mouth. If ingested, they can also damage the intestinal tract. If your cat is tempted to play with the ornaments on your tree, decorate the bottom third of the tree with non-breakable, plastic, or wooden orna-ments that do not have hooks, or decorate only

the top two-thirds of your tree. You may feel your tree looks funny, but it will save you from spending the holidays at an emergency veteri-nary clinic.Animals are also attracted to Holiday lights, and will chew or pull on the cords. Electrocution or burns to the face and mouth can result when a pet bites an electric cord. Lights need to be hung out of reach of pets, and animals should not be left unattended around Christmas trees or other strands of lights. This is not only a dan-ger to the pet, but to the family. Frayed electric

cords are a hazard to the entire household and an overzealous cat at play can easily bring down a poorly secured Christmas tree. Trees should be secured to a wall or ceiling hook. This will help pre-vent the tree from toppling over should your pet decide to jump on it to get to a tempting orna-ment.The presents under the tree pose a similar risk as the ornaments hanging from it. Animals often see ribbons and string as toys and may chew on them. Eventually they may swallow them which can cause an intestinal obstruction.

This can be a life-threatening situation requiring emergency surgery to remove the foreign ma-terial. Keeping these types of items away from pets is a simple way to protect them. For more information or if your pet experiences any of these problems, call the Fort Buchanan Veterinary Treatment Facility at 787-707-2038. If it is an emergency or outside of the clinic’s business hours (M/W/F 8:00 am – 3:30 pm, T/TH 8:00 am - 5:00 pm), please contact your lo-cal veterinary emergency clinic. Our Holiday hours are 8:00 am-12:00 pm on December 28th, 29th, 30th. We will open these days for walk-in appointments. Closed on December 24th, 27th, 31st and January 3rd, 2011.

Discovering Puerto Rico and its AttractionsAguadilla

Aguadilla was the site of the U.S. Military’s Ra-mey Air Force Base for almost five decades. Dur-ing this period, Aguadilla was home to the Stra-tegic Air Command 72d Bombardment Wing, Heavy equipped with B-52s, a very significant facility during the Cold War. Though the infrastructure still exists, it was handed over to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in the 1973. The aerial facilities are now civilian controlled by the Puerto Rico Ports Au-thority, and now make up the Rafael Hernández International Airport. The old barracks now host the Faro Inn Suites, a 79-room hotel. The Offi-cer’s Club now hosts the Faro Conference Cen-

ter. The former hospital is now the Courtyard by Marriott Punta Borinquen Resort & Casino. There is still an active part of the Base that hosts the Coast Guard Borinquen Air Station and other government agencies based at Ramey. Ramey is also the site of the new “Mariposario” (butterfly farm). Two of the main attractions of Aguadilla are Las Cascadas Water Park and the Aguadilla Ice Skat-ing Arena, which is the only ice skating complex in the Caribbean.Aguadilla is also known for its world class surfing beaches. Aguadilla’s beaches, host a variety of amateur and professional surfing events every year including the ISA world championships in 1968 and 1988. Holiday Safety for Pets by CPT Taylor Opel, DVM

During the approaching Holiday Season, it is important we ensure that our four-legged family members can safely enjoy it as much as we do. Many things we look forward to for during Christmas can be hazardous for our pets. This article will address these dangers and ways to minimize risk if not prevent them altogether.

Holiday Table Scraps: We tend to enjoy lots of rich, fatty foods during the Holidays. Since our pets are not accustomed to abrupt changes in their diet, a sudden increase in fat content can have a negative impact on their digestive health. Feeding things like ham, turkey, and sweets are common causes of vomiting, diarrhea, and pan-creatitis, which can be very serious, even fatal. Also the juices from cooking these foods can sometimes have enough fat to make your pet very sick. Foods with bone fragments are espe-cially dangerous. Since bones are not digested by the body, they can become lodged in your pet’s intestinal tract causing an obstruction and potentially requiring surgical removal. If the bones have sharp points, they can poke through your pet’s stomach or intestines and cause a se-vere and life-threatening bacterial infection. It is important to keep Holiday treats and candies out of your pet’s reach. Additionally, remem-ber gifts under your tree that may be food items and may be very tempting to curious pets.

Chocolate: Many of us are aware that chocolate can be hazardous to our pet’s health, yet it con-tinues to be the most common toxic ingestion in our pet population. It is not at all uncommon to see a bowl of chocolate candy on the dining room table in the home of a pet owner. It’s this accessibility and sweet taste that makes choco-late a very enticing toxin for dogs and cats. The primary toxins in chocolate are caffeine and theobromine (a compound related to caffeine). Depending on the dose, these compounds can cause hyperexcitability followed by weakness, loss of balance, seizures, and ultimately coma and death. The doses of theobromine and caf-feine are dependent on the amount and type of chocolate ingested. While all chocolate poses

The Twilight Saga: New Moon (PG-13)Thursday, January 20th at 5:30pmThe Twilight Saga’s second installment finds Bella and Ed-ward feeling pretty good - or at least a little less broody about the state of things after having ironed out some of the finer points of interspecies dating. Naturally, it doesn’t last long. Bella’s 18th birthday party turns into a bit of a fiasco when Edward’s brother nearly kills Bella in a fit of blood-lust. It’s an awkward situation, to be certain, but while Bella is willing to forgive and forget, Edward elects to leave town - permanently. The decision sets off a chain of miscommunications that lead to, among other things, cliff diving, a visit with vam-pire royalty, a supernatural love triangle, and a close call with a scorned vampire whose mate met a gory end at the hands of the Cullens.

Gift Buying, Food Preparations, Parties and Decorations What About Exercise?

Turkey 5k Run Results The Holiday Season is HERE! This the time of

year, especially after Thanksgiving, were most people tend to forget about exercise and focus on buying gifts, food preparation, par-ties, decorations and other Holiday related issues. This is also the time of year when many take a well deserved vacation and that proba-bly means traveling to visit family or friends. During this time, people gain five to ten or even more unwanted pounds and go into the New Year with New Year’s resolution of get-ting in shape. Bottom line is that other things take priority over exercising during the Holi-day Season and that should not be the case. If for some reason you can’t make adjustments to your schedule and become pressed for time, here are some things you can do to maintain your current fitness level during the holidays:

1. Have an alternate plan – To make this work you would have to make a plan if time is a challenge during the holidays. Anticipate the days you can get a time to work out or even to prepare your meals in advance.

2. Set short term goals – If you set short term goals and be realistic you are more willing to stick with it. Do not get discouraged by falling short. Remember this is maintenance until you get back to your regular schedule.

3. All or nothing – This relates to the pre-vious two bullets. The common phrase “I will start Monday” or “I will start in the New Year” is familiar to all. If something happens and we can‘t comply then we get discouraged and decide to do nothing until once again our conscious will call upon the need to get healthier.

4. Do something each day – Even if it for half an hour do some type of physical activity. It could be walking, stretching, pushups, abs workout, aerobic or Zumba video anything to make your blood circulate.

5. Moderation when “cheating” – If you are going to cheat with some sweets, high calorie food or alcohol keep it in moderation you won’t feel as guilty later.

6. Use an Elastic band – If you’re traveling an elastic band is easy to take with you. This sim-ple tool can help with a total body circuit and it can be done in 15 to 30 minutes.

Hope these tips can help during the Holiday Season. We look forward to seeing you soon Fitness Center. From All of our Staff: “Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year!!! By: Nancy Copeland-Payton As family and friends gather to celebrate the Holidays and music of the season surrounds us, our longing for a loved one who has died or for the shared times that have passed may intensify. Our culture encourages us to hurry through remembering and grieving a loved one, particularly during seasons of celebration. But this rush minimizes the gift of their life and the depth of our loss. This holiday season, give yourself with time set aside to intentionally remember and celebrate your loved one.A ritual or ceremony combines tangible objects with actions as a powerful way to remember a per-son and their life Place a new candle in a special place in your home – perhaps on the dining table, in the living room or in the bedroom. Light the candle each day or evening, signifying time consecrated for remembering the one you loved. In the light and warmth of the candle, sit with your memories, giving thanks for the person’s presence in the past and the memories that accompany you now. When you don’t have any place to go… when you don’t know who you can talk to… when you just need a friend… we are here to help you!
