DfE Sports Funding
This year (2014-15) additional funding is provided by the Government to improve the
provision of physical education (PE) and Sport in primary schools. Schools are free to
determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport
provision. This is turn contributes to the national longer term aim of increased participation
in PE and sport, thus encouraging pupils to develop healthy lifestyles and reach the
performance levels they are capable of.
How are we spending our sport funding?
In collaboration with Uplands Primary, Harrison Primary and Cams Hill Secondary School we
have used this additional funding to employ a sports specialist within the local cluster.
The aims of the project are:
• through coaching and team teaching with the sports specialist, to deepen
understanding and confidence in teaching PE across all primary age classes,
•to monitor the quality of teaching of PE in order to measure the impact on pupils’
learning and progress
• to improve assessment for learning in PE to accelerate progress in PE lessons
•to provide professional development for primary teachers
• to support and engage less active children in PE sessions
• to develop a skills progression across the local primary schools to ensure continuity
of provision
• to implement a baseline assessment for primary pupils to ensure smooth transition to
the secondary phase
• to improve standards of attainment for all pupils in PE
• to increase opportunities to participate in county sports competitions
• to provide enrichment and extension activities for more able pupils
For the academic year 2013-14 additional sports funding is £10,975.
For the academic year 2014-15 additional sports funding is £11,085.
Details of PE provision at our school:
All children participate in 2 x 60 minute sessions of PE or Sport per week
Swimming and Water Safety is taught for one term in Year 4
Children experience a variety of sports including invasion games, net/court/wall based games,
striking or fielding games and athletics.
All children are taught the competitive nature of sport and the importance of aiming to win
when entering competitions. All children are encouraged to compete at a variety of levels
and to become involved in clubs where appropriate.
We offer extra curricular sports clubs at school in a variety of sports including Netball,
Football, Cricket and Tag Rugby. The clubs on offer though are subject to change.
We also offer children a number of opportunities to be involved in outdoor and adventurous
pursuits through our programme of residential visits. Children take part in orienteering, low
rope type courses, archery, caving, rock climbing, canoeing and hill walking at a number of
different levels during their time at the school.
We have also used our Sports funding money to provide resources for the physical activities
that children take part in at lunchtimes and to support the continuous provision for children’s
physical development in Year R.
