DFCC ACTION TEAM TO PREVENT MARIJUANA USE A SAFE AND DRUG FREE GARRETT COUNTY! 16.4% of Garrett County high school youth used marijuana in the past 30 days. (MD YRBS 2014) Between grade levels, the percentage or marijuana users increased steadily – from 13.0% in grade 9 to 22.9% in grade 12. (MD YRBS 2014) Garrett County high school youth see smoking cigarettes as riskier than smoking marijuana. (72.2% vs. 53.1%) (Garrett County Core Measure Survey, 2015) By 12th grade, less than half of all youth see marijuana use as risky (39.1%). (Garrett County Core Measure Survey, 2015) Statistics: Research proves that 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 6 youth who try marijuana will become addicted to it. In the past 15 years, marijuana potency has tripled and since 1960 it has grown five times stronger. Today’s marijuana is not the marijuana of the 1960’s. Marijuana use directly affects the brain and these effects can last up to 28 days after last use. Marijuana users have a higher risk of depression, anxiety, psychosis and schizophrenia (6 fold increase in risk). Marijuana users have many of the same respiratory problems tobacco smokers have, such as chronic cough and more frequent chest colds.
