Are there any side effects?

DEXA scans are safe. During your examination you will be exposed to a very small amount of radiation which is the equivalent of 2-4 days of radiation you receive normally (background radiation).

How long will the examination take?

The whole examination takes about 20 minutes.

DEXA is significantly more accurate than Bod Pod, bioelectrical impedance, hydrostatic weighing and skin-fold (callipers) measurements, routinely used in pharmacies and gymnasiums. A DEXA scan is a form of x-ray and it uses a very small amount of radiation.

Procedure

Patients are asked to arrive at the clinic 10 minutes before their scheduled appointment time to complete a medical questionnaire. You will be required to remove your clothing and put on a gown before the examination commences as any metal objects such as zippers, belt buckles, bra wires and hooks will interfere with the x-ray images resulting in an invalid result. Your weight and height will be recorded before you are positioned lying down on the examination table. The scan is quick and painless.

What do the results tell me?

As a result of diet and exercise, this client actually gained a kilo to her overall body weight, although as you can see in the "after" photo she is much healthier with a higher muscle mass and significantly lower fat mass
