JANUARY 17, 2016 - SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
WHY DO YOU EAT AND DRINK?
The Master once offered a banana to an awe-struck visitor who so venerated the gift that he hardly knew what to do with it. When the Master was told of this, he said characteris-tically, “Tell the silly ass to eat it.” (Awakening, Anthony De Mello) The Lord Jesus enjoyed parties and dinners, and He even sat down with sinners and ate with them. He was the first to notice that the people who followed to hear Him were hungry. This human and down-to-earth manner appeared sus-picious to the Pharisees and religious leaders of the Jews, who questioned Him: “Why do your disciples eat and drink, and not fast?” Jesus said, “As long as the bridegroom is with them, they do not fast.” The kingdom of God, as Jesus preached, is a wedding banquet. As today’s Gospel story tells us, Jesus performs the first sign of His Kingdom by attending the wedding in Cana, where He turns water into wine for the celebration to be per-fected. This miracle is the foreshadowing of the mystery of the Eucharist Jesus will establish when His hour comes. Do you recognize the face of the happy Bridegroom in the daily meals and celebrations of your life? Do you have time to relish it? Fr. Peter T Truong.
