the timbers:

KWilaWe use a timber called Kwila. It is commonly found across southern Asia and the Pacific. Because of its stability and its resistance to decay and insect attack, it is commonly used in wharf construction, house pilings, decking, and of course, outdoor furniture.

Devon was the first manufacturer to recognise Kwila’s potential for outdoor furniture and over 30 years later it is now the favoured timber for the “Down-under” markets of Australia and New Zealand. Kwila has a rich golden brown hue with many varied grainpatterns. The timber colour may vary from “blonde to brunette”. Each table is hand made, so we can select and match the table planks, so the varying colours are complimentary.

teaKTeak (Tectona grandis) is a durable tropical hardwood timber. It has been regarded for centuries as the ideal timber for boat building and furniture making where strength and longevity are required. The extractives in Teak are highly water resistant and repellant to insect attack, consequently Teak wood will survive for many years outdoors with little or no structural deterioration.

What to expect:

Re-oiling your furniture is your choice. If you don’t, the timber will weather naturally to a silver-grey colour. This process can take up to a year depending on your local climatic conditions. Sun and rain cause the weathering so if your Classic is “undercover”, this weathering process will probably not occur. If you want the “silver grey” look, do not oil your furniture. If you prefer to prolong the original colour, oiling 2 or 3 times a year with either Devon Oil or, if unavailable, any high quality teak oil will assist in colour maintenance.

What’s it made of?

the fabrics:

Planasol from Austria and Sunbrella from the USA. “Sure it’s expensive, but there is no future in putting cheap fabric on a quality frame”. Planasol and Sunbrella are used extensively across Europe for awnings and for marine applications such as spray dodgers and boat cushions. Devon was the first company to combine wood and fabric for outdoor furniture. We chose Solution dyed 100% acrylic fibers of Planasol and Sunbrella for their ability to withstand the elements. Solution-dyed acrylic fibers are created through a unique process that adds pigment during fiber production. These fibers are then spun into yarn resultingin permeated color throughout the fabric. Color and fibers are one complete product - so the color lasts as long as the fabric does. Our chair covers have been known to last upwards of fifteen years outside but on average you can expect between 7 and 10 years before re-covering is recommended. The fabric is air permeable so it’s cool to sit on. Being acrylic, it’s rot resistant and the colour is fade resistant too. The umbrella fabric, which is also Planasol and Sunbrella is very tightly woven with minimal light transmission resulting in excellent UV protection.

“The Shiny Bits”. A lot of outdoor furniture suffers because of inferior fittings. The ability to withstand outdoor exposure in varying conditions is paramount, particularly in salty coastline conditions. “Rust can be a real killer, ask anyone with metal furniture”. All Devon fittings are made from stainless steel, aluminium and zinc alloy and will retain their natural finish in all climatic conditions.

caring for your devon1. Tighten fittings once a year. An allen key is provided for the purpose.

2. Check chair and table footpads annually for wear. The footpads are designed to protect the wood and your patio from damage caused by abrasive surfaces such as concrete.

3. If you choose to re-oil your furniture, clean timber surfaces with either a waterblaster or scrubbing brush. This will remove any moss or lichen growth on the timber. Once timber surface is completely dry, apply two coats of Devon Oil or if unavailable any high quality teak oil. (Instruction on the bottle)

4. For best results and the timber to its original colour prior to oiling. Oiling “grey” kwila or teak will not restore its original colour. The timber will darken with each application of oil.

5. Clean your chair and umbrella covers annually with either a waterblaster or a slightly diluted household bleach and a soft brush. Bleach will not damage the fabric. Avoid getting bleach on the woodwork as it could “mark” the timber if not washed off immediately.

6. Tighten chair covers and fittings as required, normally once a year. The velcro strap system enables quick simple tightening without the need for complicated knots.

7. When new, frequent hosing will accelerate the “bleeding process” of kwila. Place new furniture on grass for this purpose. The sap stain will wear off patio surfaces but you can clean the sap off with concrete cleaner, if you prefer.

8. Minor cracking, particularly in end grains can be expected on any wooden outdoor furniture. These cracks will “open and close” with climatic changes. If a major crack occurs, (the thickness of a credit card) contact us on-line or your nearest retailer. Cracking normally occurs on horizontal surfaces such as table top and chair arms.

umbrellasUmbrellas by their very nature can suffer through wind damage. We recommend leaving your umbrella down in strong winds. In harsh winter climates it is also a good idea to store your umbrella inside over that period.

You can expect minor cracking on the finial, as it has no protection from the elements at all.

Make sure you use the locking pin to hold your umbrella in the table.

All the umbrella components are available to facilitate in-home repairs.

devon Warrants to the original purchaser that it’s timber frames are free from manufacturing defects in materials or

workmanship. surface coatings are not covered by Warranty as both rely on the customers maintenance program to

ensure their performance. all fabrics, chair and umbrella covers are warranted for five years against loss of color

or strength under normal usage and exposure conditions. umbrella frames are covered by a two year warranty. devon will replace or repair such defects for a period of five years (excluding umbrellas) from the date of purchase provided

that the product has not been subject to accident, abnormal use, or lack of reasonable care. the warranty does not

cover product sold as “seconds” or for product damaged in transportation or furniture used in commercial, contract, or

non residential use.
