The Institut of Recherche for Development (former ORSTOM) is a French state-owned science and technology research institute under the joint authority of the French Research and French Foreign Affairs ministries.
The IRD is conducting scientific programs focusing on the relationship between humankind and the environment for southern countries.
The aim of these programs is to contribute to the sustainable development of these countries.IRD covers a wide variety of research fields organized into more than 80 research units in 30 countries on the 5 continents.
What is IRD ?
Budget200 millions of Euros
Staff2083 employees, including
900 researchers, 778 non research staffand 545 other status
939 of permanent staff posted overseas in 39 countries : Africa, Latin America and Asia, French Tropical overseas dependencies (Dom-Tom ’s),.
Research 80 research and service units
including 40 joint units
IRD-ESPACE Unit develop innovative methodologies
based on earth observation and integrated approaches for natural resources management
transversal and pluridisciplinary research team (63 scientists and engineers) specialised in developing spatial applications in the context of development
principals direction of research : earth observation in tropical region
(spatial indicators, real time monitoring) integrated approaches (spatial
analyses, actor representations, participative approaches),
environmental information systems for decision support.
thematic applications : marine ressource, littoral (ICZM), health (spatial survey), land use and land cover changes
international network of receiving stations (NOAA/AVHRR, SeaWifs, SPOT-VGT, SPOT, ENVISAT) as regional space observatories for research science and environmental survey
Potential contributions to CB tasks
Open Source Software (CB 0701e) MD-Web sofware Thematic DSS OSS software (water, heath, land degradation, fisheries)
Knowledge Sharing IRD expertise (health, environment, …)
Contributions to the CB Portal/GEO Portal Thematic data (water, ocean, health, …) Spatial products and tools
GEOSS data sharing principles Long term observatories for regional environmental survey : SEASnet Regional receiving station to access to HR data for research, training and
development projects : SEAS-Amazonia/Caraïbes, SEAS-Indian Ocean.
=> A way to define specific data policies for sustainable develoment finalities=> Demonstrate the benefit of provinding « full and open » regional access to data,
metadata and product in developping countries
Spatial data, tools and knowledges sharing to produce thematic products
- A regional network based on 5 receiving
stations (L-Band : NOAA-AVHRR, Seawifs)
to survey the intertropical regions
- A partnership with France (IRD), Spain
(Canaria Univ.) and institutions in developing
countries
Specificity :
- Independent data sources
- Control data sets quality
- Observation on long-term
- Genericity in methodology
- Participative way (users, managers and
scientists) to develop long term applications
SEASnet project
SEAS-GuyaneSEAS Guyane project : Survey of the Environment Assisted by Satellite
Ground receving station for high resolution remote sensing applications Technological plate-form for acquisition and treatments of space datas (SPOT, ENVISAT, …)
for resarch, formation and regional development projects
A long term project to develop regional capacities to built regional environmental observatories
