FIREFIGHTERS SKY TOWER STAIR CHALLENGE 2016.Each year the Halcombe Fire Brigade sends a team up to Auckland to take part in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Climb Challenge. 2016 will be the brigade’s fifth year competing and they are hoping to take their combined fundraising total on behalf of Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ to over $100,000! Mark on the calendar the Fundraising Auction, 7:30pm Saturday 14th May at the Halcombe Tavern. As a new fundraising initiative for 2016, Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) have produced a commemorative tea towel (view at the Halcombe Tavern for a limited time) containing images of the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge drawn by patients and their supporters. One of the images was drawn by Tyler Bisset, a 6 year old student from Halcombe School suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, and depicts a Halcombe firefighter completing the climb in 2015. Tea towels cost $10.00 with $6.00 from each towel sold going to support the work of LBC. To order, please contact Kevin Darling (027 244 5407, [email protected]) or order at the Halcombe Tavern. Tea towels should be available for collection in approximately 2-3 weeks; payment required in advance.

Sometimes things happen that affect people within our community, be it the arrival of a new born, a devastating fire, illness or the passing of a loved one. A bit of baking or some meals for the freezer are often greatly appreciated. If you would like to be included on the list of people who can be contacted when things like this arise, please email [email protected] . Please also email if you know of someone in our community that could do with some belly warming community spirit.

CREATIVE COMMUNITES PROJECT – ANZAC DAY POPPIESThe response to this project has been hugely positive and the finished poppies look incredible! The group of about 8 core people (with others popping in when they could) began making the poppies on the 4th February and for 5 weeks, met every Thursday at 7pm in the Halcombe Hall. Between them they have made around 210 ceramic poppies! This ANZAC day the poppies will be placed in one of the grass quadrants of the Halcombe cenotaph to simulate the ‘Fields of Poppies’ at Somme, France.Everyone had a lot of fun making the poppies, learning about the pottery processes, but more importantly, getting to know one another a little better. A HUGE thank you to Jeannette Henderson for making this happen . The group are thinking of other workshops that could be run – so watch this space! The poppies can be purchased after ANZAC Day and look amazing placed in the garden.$6 each or 3 for $15. Email [email protected] to reserve yours as only a limited number are available for sale.

ANZAC DAY 2016 – 25th April.ANZAC 2016 planning is well under way. The commemorations will start with a march (from the Halcombe Rugby Club rooms this year), at 10:45am. There are a few new things happening this year so keep an eye on the Halcombe community Facebook and webpage for more details. If there are any areas you may be able to help with please contact Richard Bain (328 8627) or Wayne Short (328 8768). We would love to have some people to help with the cup of tea/coffee and organising the finger food in the hall following the service.
