Catholic Schools of Broome County

George L. Deuel, SCCHS Class of 1984, was recently

promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S.

Army. LT. Col. Deuel is currently serving with United

States Forces–Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Free-

dom/Operation New Dawn, an ongoing military cam-

paign which began on March 20, 2003, with the inva-

sion of Iraq.

Prior to deploying to Iraq, George was stationed in

Vicenza, Italy, where he was the Chief of Strategy and

Engagements for US Army Africa, developing plans and

programs for US Army engagement on the continent of

Africa emphasizing professionalism within African mili-

taries. Additionally, George published an article in the

Canadian military journal, On Track, titled “Crisis Pre-

vention: USAFRICOM, Partnerships, and the US Army”

Commenting on how his schooling at SCC impacted

his life, George recalled teacher Max Deus having the

biggest impact, academic-wise. “As my German

teacher, Mr. Deus got me very interested in places out-

side of the US.” While stationed in Stuttgart, Germany,

he recalled many of his classes which left him fairly

fluent in German. “It helped tremendously while in

eastern Europe working with militaries, needing a com-

mon language. I also believe that the sports program

was first class at SCCHS. That experience really

taught me sportsmanship and teamwork , and to

never quit, no matter how hard things seemed.

Those traits have really helped me get to where I am

today and to continue to ‘drive on’ under imperfect

conditions.” Lt. Col. Deuel also expressed the fact

that his experience at SCC prepared him to deal with

the difficult things in life and reinforced his moral

upbringing. “Now that I have a 7 year old who is

starting school, I especially appreciate my Catholic

School experiences. The teachers who are there be-

According to Livin’ Magazine there’s nothing small about the order that came into The Petite Café, Nutley, NJ several months ago: bake 15,000 of their signature stuffed cupcakes for the 10th anniversary gala of O Magazine in Times Square. The three-day celebration in May marked 10 years since the first publishing of the women’s magazine by talk show superstar Oprah, and Petite Café was selected to dazzle party-goers at the finale party held at the conclusion of a two-mile walk in Manhattan on Mother’s Day. "It’s all about Oprah; she’s had such an impact on people," said co-owner Maureen (Ruane) Jaret, SCC Class of 1978Maureen (Ruane) Jaret, SCC Class of 1978Maureen (Ruane) Jaret, SCC Class of 1978Maureen (Ruane) Jaret, SCC Class of 1978, with her husband, Keith. "This is so thrilling, opportunities like this just don’t happen to anyone." Last November, co-owner Keith created a pink ribbon cupcake to pro-mote breast cancer awareness for the Susan G. Komen Foundation charity dinner. Petite Café’s tasty and crea-tive cupcake caught the attention of event organizers, who remembered the company when it came time to plan the O Magazine celebration. Keith, who invented the café’s near 150 varieties even dreamed up a new flavor for the occasion: a peach cobbler "Gayle" cup-cake, named for the magazine’s editor and created with her favorite dessert in mind. The shop’s most popular flavor, Red Velvet, was renamed "Oprah" for the party. The cupcakes were placed on stage in Times Square on a special tiered holder showcasing many

flavors, with sparklers on top to make it appear as an anniversary cake.

Maureen and her husband, Keith, a Culinary Institute of America graduate, created the expanding cupcake empire in 2005, following the unexpected success of one of their catering business’s desserts. "We wanted something different, so we made a stuffed cupcake based on Keith’s favorite candy, Reese’s peanut butter cups," Maureen said. The little snack was a big hit. "People started asking us, ‘what’s tomorrow’s flavor?’" Five years later, the shop makes about 12,000 on a weekly basis, selling the cupcakes in locations around New Jersey and New York, including several places in

New York City.

The little cupcake shop from Nutley has been a part of many high-profile events, such as the recent second season premiere of The Real Housewives of New Jer-sey reality TV show. Petite created a polka dot ladybug cake for the debut party at the Brownstone in Paterson. Maureen’s favorite past catering experience was the premiere party at the Rainbow Room in New York City for My Fair Wedding with David Tutera. Maureen says, Maureen, "But this has to be the most exciting!" For

cently hired as an NBC News corre-

spondent in Atlanta. Mr. Truong

worked as a general assignment

reporter with KUSA since 2006 and

served as the president of the Asian

American Journalists Association–

Denver from 2008-2009. Prior to

his arrival in Denver, he worked in

New Orleans and Macon, Georgia,

as a reporter.

Mr. Truong graduated with a Mas-

ters degree in broadcast journalism

from Syracuse University and a BA

in philosophy, politics and law from

Binghamton University.

moved to LA to start his dream, a

clothing line. His collection is called

DiLascia’s Bakery and is based on

his family’s bakery uniform. As of

April 2010, the product had been

launched a year and a half and were

sold in 130 stores around the world,

including Japan, England, Canada

and the USA. The collection is sold

locally at the Burlington Coat Factory

in the Oakdale Mall. Patrick reports

his excitement at having the collec-

tion sold in the city that it was in-

spired by!

Patrick shared that some of the best

years of his life were spent at Seton

Catholic Central High School! His

mother, the late Mary (Baker ) Di-

served as a catalyst for her son to

follow his dreams as he realized the

fragility of life and the fact that we

only live once! Mrs. DiLascia was a

graduate of CCHS Class of 1969.

Kristin Dupre, SCC 2002 Kristin Dupre, SCC 2002 Kristin Dupre, SCC 2002 Kristin Dupre, SCC 2002 , Ph.D. Candidate in Psychology at Bing-hamton University, was interviewed and filmed in her lab for BU’s Harpur College’s 60th Anniversary Celebra-tion for the University’s web site, called “Sixty Perspectives on Harpur at Sixty” plus a brief video that was unveiled at the 2010 Homecoming celebration. Sixty individuals, includ-ing professors, students, and alumni were invited to participate in the project. Kristin’s work has included research in Parkinson’s disease be-ing featured in BU’s annual research journal: Binghamton Research 2010 Edition. The article entitled, “Cultivating the Next Generation of

Innovators: In Labs and Far Beyond, Graduate Students are Vital to the Campus Ecosystem”, included infor-mation regarding Miss Dupre’s re-ceiving a competitive National Re-search Service Award in 2009 through the National Institute of Neu-rological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. The two-year grant of about $40,000 annually has provided her with more freedom to test possible ways to re-duce the abnormal movements asso-ciated with Parkinson’s disease treat-ment. Her work has been published in other sources such as the Journal of Neuroscience. Miss Dupre, ex-pects to receive her Ph.D. in Psychol-

ogy in 2011.

He will also take on content developing market-ing assignments. A.J. joined ESPN in May ‘06, working as a temporary em-ployee in Affiliate Marketing. He was hired full time as a Marketing Coordi-nator in 2007, and was part of the team that launched NASCAR’s return to ESPN. He also played a significant role in the early days of ESPN Rise. Most recently, AJ has assisted in exe-cuting their 2010 FIFA World Cup

campaign.

Kari holds an Associates degree in Graphic Design from Broome Com-munity College and a BA (summa cum laude) in studio art from Bing-hamton University. She was Program Manager for the former So. Tier Cele-brates and is now working for Click Smart Solutions as a Marketing Con-sultant, and owns Ovation Design Studio. She also donates services to the Red Cross and Community Op-tions. She is married to Brian Bayait 2002. The couple has a daughter

Thomas has an Associates degree from BCC and Bachelors in manage-ment with a concentration in finance and marketing, and was named the Intern of the Year for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, and is now among its top 40 new, full-time repre-sentatives in the region. He has served as marketing chair for the So. Tier Young Professionals, mentor at COMPEER Youth Mentoring Program and president of the Triple Cities Golf

Association.

This annual dinner, which began un-der the leadership and vision of the late Msgr. Peter J. Owens serves to raise financial support for the SCCHS Athletic Program, allowing friends to reunite while honoring outstanding alumni, coaches and benefactors in the program. This year, three alumni, Mr. William “Pete” Gallagher, Mr. Jim Miller and Mrs. Regina (Speicher) Hutchinson were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Mr. Gallagher, St. Pat-rick's, ‘44, served two separate terms as the local Superintendant of Catho-lic Schools and was guidance coun-selor and basketball coach at Seton Catholic High, Endicott. Mr. Miller, SCHS ‘66 is a former student athlete at Seton Catholic High and LeMoyne College, and has been the Varsity Baseball Coach at SCC for the past 18 years!
