Resilient Infrastructure
Resilience is “the ability to adapt to changing conditions and prepare for, withstand, and rapidly recover from disruption.”
Resilience is defined as “the capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and still retain its basic functions and structure.”
Resilience is the ability of a system to survive and thrive in the face of a complex, uncertain and ever-changing future. It is a way of thinking about both short term cycles and long term trends: minimizing disruptions in the face of shocks and stresses, recovering rapidly when they do occur, and adapting steadily to become better able to thrive as conditions continue to change.
It is a powerful companion to sustainable development thinking.

Creating Resilient Systems The creation of resilient infrastructure systems may require large scale changes to the way infrastructure is planned, designed, managed and maintained. In many cases, advanced technology and instrumentation can facilitate the development of systems with greater ability to withstand and respond to sudden impacts.

Creating Resilient Infrastructure
How do we understand what constitutes resilient infrastructure? How can we compare designs to see how they would contribute to resilient system? Is there a role for infrastructure rating systems in improving our understanding?
We can learn from some of the international rating systems: Australian Green Infrastructure Council (AGIC) rating system
These are early days and we can try to take leadership position

So how do we understand what constitutes resilient infrastructure? How can we compare designs to see how they would contribute to a resilient system? Is there a role for infrastructure rating systems in improving our understanding?
There are several infrastructure sustainability rating tools available: the Australian Green Infrastructure Council (AGIC)’s IS tool, the Institution of Civil Engineers’ CEEQUAL tool and the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure’s ENVISION tool. Other infrastructure rating tools are in development elsewhere. AGIC is in early discussions about establishing a ‘World Council of Sustainable Infrastructure’ to encourage the alignment of these different tools.

City-based residents and businesses depend on the effective and reliable operation of infrastructure systems. Cities need a new way of thinking about how they plan, design, build and manage this essential infrastructure under more challenging conditions. This can be understood by the principle of resilience.
