Two days later, while he was on his way to the Moon mission, a failure of the electrical system of one of the oxygen tanks of the service module caused an explosion that caused damage to both oxygen tanks and a waste of electricity.
The Command Module remained in service on its batteries and its oxygen tank, but they were usable only in the last hours of the mission. The crew stopped the command module and lunar module used as a "lifeboat" while en route back to Earth.

• Despite difficulties caused by limited power, cabin heat loss, and lack of drinking water, the crew arrived safely back on Earth, and the mission was considered a "successful failure."
