Preamble

“These are the words of the Sun Mursilis, the great king, the king of the Hatti land, the valiant, the favorite of the Storm- god, the son of Suppiluliumas, the great king, the king of the Hatti land, the valiant.”

Deuteronomy 1:1-5 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel . . . . 3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had commanded him to give to them, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law.

Treaty Between Mursilis and Duppi-Tessub“Aziras was your grandfather, Duppi- Tessub. He rebelled against my father, but submitted again to my father. When the kings of Nuhassi land and the kings of Kinza rebelled against my father, Aziras did not rebel. As he was bound by treaty, he remained bound by treaty. As my father fought against his enemies, in the same manner fought Aziras. Aziras remained loyal….”

Treaty Between Mursilis and Duppi-Tessub“Should Duppi-Tessub not honor these words of the treaty and the oath, may these gods of the oath destroy Duppi-Tessub together with his person, his wife, his son, his grandson, his house, his land and together with everything that he owns. But if Duppi-Tessub honors these words of the treaty and the oath that are inscribed on this tablet, may these gods of the oath protect him together with his person, his wife, his son, his grandson, his house (and) his country.”

Deuteronomy 28:1-2 Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God . . . 15 But it shall come about, if you do not obey the LORD your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.”

To impress upon the Israelites the importance of keeping the covenant which they had made with the Lord. Just as nations were bound to keep their covenants with foreign kings or face the consequences, so Israel is bound to honor the terms of her covenant with the Greatest King, the Lord, or face the consequences.

Interestingly, Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy frequently throughout his ministry. During what must have been one of the most trying times in his life, his temptation in the wilderness, he quoted Deuteronomy from memory.

In a sense, Deuteronomy is a summarization of the Bible so far. It describes just what has been going on between God and the world. The essence of that interaction is the covenant with Israel. God has rescued Israel and Israel must respond with faith and love and obedience. Ultimately, she does not succeed in this demand and is judged accordingly. By contrast, Jesus Christ does succeed in fulfilling this demand of the covenant, but is still judged as a substitute for all those who do not succeed, including you and me.
