Page 1: DETROIT TIGERS GAME NOTES - MLB.commlb.mlb.com/documents/8/1/6/227827816/Tigers_Notes_5_2_17_uqwax0w2.pdfDETROIT TIGERS GAME NOTES WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS: 1935, 1945, 1968, 1984 Detroit

YESTERDAY’S ACTION: The Tigers defeated the

Cleveland Indians, 7-1, at Comerica Park. Starter

Daniel Norris (W, 2-2) threw 6.0 strong innings,

allowing one earned run on fi ve hits with four walks

and a season- high eight strikeouts. Detroit took a 2-0

lead in the 1st inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by

Nicholas Castellanos and Victor Mar nez. In the 2nd,

Tyler Collins crushed a three-run homer to right-center

fi eld to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead. Alex Avila added a

two-run single in the 5th and the Tigers bullpen closed

the door with three scoreless innings in relief.

TIGERS TRANSACTIONS: Prior to today’s game, Detroit

reinstated 1B Miguel Cabrera (right groin strain) from

the 10-day disabled list and op oned C/1B John Hicks

to triple-A Toledo. Cabrera, a .320 career hi! er in 15

Major League seasons, was ba" ng .268 (15x56) with

a .369 OBP, two doubles, three home runs and nine

RBI in 16 games at the me of his injury. Hicks fi lled in

admirably in Miggy’s absence by pos ng a .423 (11x26)

average with three doubles, one home run and seven

RBI in seven games for the Tigers.

POCKET ACES: Jus n Verlander will do ba! le with his

fellow ace, Corey Kluber, tonight at Comerica Park. It

marks the second matchup this year of the two talented

righthanders. Their last mee ng didn’t go quite as

planned, however. On April 15th at Progressive Field,

Verlander and Kluber combined to allow 15 earned

runs, the most by opposing former Cy Young winners

in a game in Major League history (source: Elias Sports

Bureau). Verlander hasn’t won a start since Opening

Day in Chicago (4/4), but he also hasn’t received much

run support since then. Over his last four starts (since

4/10), Detroit has scored only nine runs combined

while Jus n is in the game, including two starts when

the Tigers scored only one run of support.

BULLPEN BOUNCE BACK: Detroit relievers have not

allowed a run in their last two games (both Tigers

wins). They’ve given up just three hits and one walk

over 7.0 scoreless innings during that stretch (.125

opp. AVG) with 10 strikeouts (12.86 SO/9.0IP). The

Tigers pen allowed at least one earned run in each of

their previous 11 games (6.95 ERA, 33.2IP/26ER from

4/18-29).

CENTRAL PERK: Currently at 9-6 (.600), the Tigers have

the best intra-division winning percentage among all

teams in the American League Central. The White Sox

are a close second at 12-9 (.571), while the Indians are

7-6 (.538) and the Twins are an even 10-10 (.500). The

Royals, who the Tigers have yet to play, have really

struggled against the AL Central this year, going 1-8

(.111) versus their division foes.

SIX RUNS FOR THE SIXTH CITY: The Tigers have gone

3-1 (.750) over their fi rst four games against the

Indians this year, pu" ng them one win shy of their

en re win total vs. Cleveland from the 2016 season.

Last year, Detroit went 4-14 (.222) against the Indians,

which was their third-worst winning percentage ever

vs. Cleveland (0-12 in 1996, 2-8 in 1994). The Tigers

have posted double-digit hit totals in three of their

four games against the Indians this season and are

averaging 6.00 runs per game (24R/4G).

ON THIS DATE IN TIGERS HISTORY: 1901 - A# er the

Tigers scored fi ve runs in the top of the 9th inning at

Chicago’s South Side Park, the White Sox slowed down

the pace of the game in hopes the contest would be

rained out. Umpire Tom Connolly was not impressed

and forfeited the game, the fi rst in American league

history, giving Detroit a 7-5 victory.

TIGERS ON THE DL: OF JaCoby Jones (le# lip lacera on,

10-day DL on April 23); OF J.D. Mar! nez (right midfoot

sprain, 10-day DL on March 31 (retro to 3/30).

ABOUT JV: In his 12th full season with the Tigers, Verlander will make his

sixth start of the season tonight vs. Cleveland.

on Thursday vs. Sea! le, allowing an unearned run on fi ve hits with two

walks and eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

VS. CLEVELAND: Verlander has faced the Indians more than any team in his career as tonight will mark his 50th career start against Cleveland. In his previous 49 starts vs. Cleveland, Verlander has a 19-22 record with a 4.68 ERA (307.2IP/160ER) and 330 strikeouts. He started against the Indians earlier this season on April 15 in Cleveland and took the loss, allowing a career-high nine runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 4.0

innings.

AT COMERICA PARK: Verlander has made 176 career starts at Comerica Park and has a 91-48 record

with a 3.20 ERA (1182.0IP/420ER) and 1,094 strikeouts. In two home starts this season, Verlander

IMPRESSIVE OPENING DAY START: Verlander made his ninth career Opening Day start on April 4 at

Chicago (AL) and earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in

6.1 innings. The 10 strikeouts were # ed for the most by a Tigers pitcher on Opening Day since 1913,

equaling the mark set by Jean Dubuc in 1914 vs. the St. Louis Browns and Mickey Lolich in 1966 at

the New York Yankees and 1970 at the Washington Senators. Verlander’s nine Opening Day starts

rank third in Tigers history, trailing Jack Morris, who started on Opening Day 11 # mes, and George

Mullin, who made 10 Opening Day starts.

PILING UP THE PUNCHOUTS: Verlander established a career high with eight double-digit strikeout

performances in 2016, the most by a Tigers pitcher since Max Scherzer also had eight games with

10-or-more strikeouts in 2013. Verlander has 38 career games with 10-or-more strikeouts, which

ranks second among Tigers pitchers since at least 1913, trailing only Mickey Lolich, who posted 54

games with 10-or-more strikeouts during his Tigers career. Verlander fi nished the 2016 season with 254 strikeouts, the most strikeouts he's had in a season since 2009

when he struck out 269 ba! ers. His 254 strikeouts were the most by a pitcher in his age-33 season-or-older since Randy Johnson struck out 290 in 2004. Verlander

eclipsed 200 strikeouts in a season for the sixth # me in his career, becoming just the second pitcher in franchise history to have six-or-more seasons with at least 200

strikeouts, joining Mickey Lolich, who had seven such seasons.

REACHING 2,000 STRIKEOUTS: Verlander reached a career milestone in 2016 as he struck out Eddie Rosario to end the fourth inning on May 18 vs. Minnesota for the

2,000th strikeout of his major league career. Verlander became the second pitcher in Tigers history to reach 2,000 strikeouts, joining Mickey Lolich, and the 76th in MLB
