Sparky Anderson is more than a major leaguebaseball manager with charisma. He's got theflgures to back up his reputation.

At th€ start ol lhe 1983 se6son, Anderson hadthe highest winning percentage among majorleague m6nagers current ly in th€ game.

His r€cord in 13 years - the last four withDstroit - showed 1,146 victories and 842 losses fora .576 pe.centage. That is good for eighth on theall-tim€ lllL list for those wilh at least 10 vearsexp€fl€nc€.

And€rson's victory total was third on the listarnong curr6nt managers behind former Tigermansger Rslph Houk, now with Boston, and SanDi€go's Oick Wil l iams.

While the manager usually is the one who getsthe €ttontion, he knows he must have a top-drawerstaff of coachss. They must be talented at not onlymolding young up-and-comers, but also motivating

Anderson is bless€d with six of the finer coachesin Gatos Brown, Bil ly Consolo, Roger Crsig, AlexGrammas, and Dick Trac€wski.

Tracewski has been with th9 Tiggrs tho longost- since 1972 - while Brown is next in Detroitseniority, having ioined the Tigers in 1978. Consolocame aboard in '1979, while Craig and Grammasboth became Tiger coaches in 1980.

Talk about great f i rstimpressionsl After a sol id butunspectacular six-year career withthe San Francisco Giants, Herndonmoved to the American L€ag!e lastYear and became one of th€ mostoutstanding and consistent Tigers.

The r ight-hand€d hi t t ingoutfielder, a former Tennesseestate university student, enjoyedhis f inest season with personalhighs in nearly every batt ingcategory- He hi t .292, with 614 atbats,92 runs, 179 hi ts,21 doubles,23 homers, and 88 RBl. He evenstole 12 bases, had a 17-gamehit t ing streak, and t ied a majorleague record by hi t t ing lour home

runs in consecut ive plate

But whi le hi t t ing stat ist ics arethe easiest to document, in lef t f ie ldHerndon also was sensat ional. Hecovered a lot of ground and mademany potent ial hi ts appear to berout ine outs. He also made twogame-saving, over-the-fence

Herndon, acquired in December,1981, in the trade that sent DanSchatzeder and Mike Chris to theGiants, was fhe Sporting News'Nat ional League Rookie of the Yearin 1976. He was San Francisco'slv ivP in 1981.

For the third straight season,Petry last year had the lowestearned-run-average on the Tigers,3.22. That went along with a fine15-9 rscord.

The 6-4, 200-pound right-handerfrom Anaheim Hil ls, Cali f . , hasbecome one of the better pitchersin the feagus and, at only 24, couldbecome a stalwart starter for many

l f he ever can avoid inlurieswhich have plagued his louryearmajor league career, Gibson couldput some phenomenal hitt ingstatistics on the books.

The left-handed hitting outfielderhas displayed raw power that hasexcited Tiger f€ns sinco he broke inwith Detroit in September, 1979.

But injuries, particularly a severeleft wrist injury lirst suffered inJune, 1980, have soured hisprogrsss,

Last year he was limited to 69games, having been sidellned by asore left knee, strained left caifmuscle, stomach ailment, and oncoagain the 16ft wrist problem.

He was on th6 disabled l ist fromJuly 15 to the end of the season,

Early in the season cibson had a12-game hitt ing streak. He had afourhit game and six thrss-hitgames. Despite the partial season,he collocted six game-winning hits, eight homers, 16 doubles,35 RBl,and 25 walks, plus a .278 average in266 at bats,

How could a 5-11, 160-pounderfind the upper deck in r ight c6nterfield so often? Who knows, butWhitaker did. And he wound upwith 15 home runs last y6ar.

Add the dimension of power tohis already larg€ array of talentsand it becomes clear how valuablea player "Sweet Lou" is.

He hit .286, s6t a team recordwith 11 game-winning hits, drove in65 runs, and l6d American L€aguesecond basemen with a ,988fielding p€rc€ntage.

He even stole 11 bases, including home at lMilwaukeeduring a game in September.

Known as one of the finestfielding shortstops in the majors,T.ammell needs only to dsvelopsome hitting consistency to becomea lruly great player,

Now that he's had a season tosettle down in Detroit, big thingsare expected from Lemon - whogave indications in the second haltof the 1982 campaign what mightbe expected.

A roturn to his 1979 End 1980form would put Lopez back in theclas6 with the top reliel pitchers inm6 96m0.

And there were some indicationstrom last season that theachievement certainly is possible,

In 1979 and 1980 the burlyMexican right-hander earned thenickname "Sefror Smoke" bycombining tor a 23-11 record and42 saves. He was used as a spotstarter and rel iever in 1981, then

And what a job he did, posting a4-0 record and impressive 1.76 EBA.
