Bynowwewillknowifthegroundhogsawhisshadow,butaseasyaswehadwinterinDecemberandJanuary,Iwillconsideritanearlyspringeitherway.IhopeyouallhadagreattimeattheViaVecchiaWinerysocializerandarenowstartingtothinkaboutwakingupyourPorschefromhibernation.Icantellyouthatmanydayshavealreadybeenspentintheplanningandpreparationforthisyear’sdrivingseasonandthatyouwillnotbedisappointedwiththelineupthisyear.Wearereallyexcitedabouthavingour2012clubraceinAugust.Ithinkthatthechangewillimprovethewholeevent...anotherreallyneatthingisthatourMaydatecanbenowbeutilizedbythewholeclub,beginnerstoadvancedandafullcomplementofourfantasticinstructors.SomakeplanstocomeoutforourMayDE.It’sFridayandSaturdayonly,sothateveryonecanspendthatSundaycelebratingMothersDay.
PorscheAGhasclearlybeenbusy,too.I’vebeenseeinglotsofpressaboutthenew911,(the991)anditreallylooksfantastic,ifperhapsalittlebittoorefinedformytaste,butiswithoutadoubtatruesupercar.Wheneveranewgeneration911comesout,driversoftheoldermachinesfacethedilemmaofneedingtofigureouteitherhowtodrivealittlebitfaster,andalsomakingtheircarsalittlebitfastertoo.Thistime,theair-cooledcrowdmayjusthavebeensatisfiedthattheircarsareas“entertaining”todrive.AgesagowhenIfirstgotmy‘84Carrera,itwasactuallyoneofthequickercarsattheDE’s.Backthen,youjustdidn’tseethatmanypeoplewithbig-horsepowercarslikeyoudotoday.Therewere
lotsof914’s,944’s,and911SC’s,alwayssomeBMW’sandanarrayofRX7’s,Supra’sandsuch.Theywereallcapablecarswithoutadoubt,butnotliketheland-projectilesthatweseelately.Thisistrulyanexceptionaltimetobeacarenthusiast.ThephenomenalcarsthatI’vebeeninmakemeagreewiththepunditswhosaywe’reinthemidstofagoldenage.Andhowcanitnotbe?Thenewsportscarsaresogoodinthewaytheyjustabsorberrors,thattheymaketheaveragedriverlooklikehe’sreadytowinLeMans.Ireallyhopethatthesenewmachinesarestillbeingdrivenintimesless-golden,thewaymanyofouroldiesarestillseennow,butthecomplexityandexpenseofmaintainingthecurrentmachinerywillmakeitachallenge.ThegianttiresandbrakepadsthatcomeonthenewercarsaresoexpensivethatIanticipatethatpeoplewillthinktwiceaboutdoingdriver’sschoolsintheirPorsches.It’salreadyhappeningactually.WelaughabouthowmanyMiata’saredrivenbyPorscheClubfolks,butthejokewon’tbefunnyyearsfromnowiftherearen’talsoalotofPorschesattheDE’sandautocrosses.Usuallythefreemarketcomestotherescueandthat’swhatI’mcountingonforthesakeofmykidandyourswhowanttogoblastingaroundthetrackintheirown911’s.
Naturally,thisisallassumingthatit’snotcurtainsforuswiththisMayancalendarbusiness.I’mcautiouslyoptimisticthoughthatthingswillbeok,butIintendtohaveasmuchfunthisyearaspossible,justasahedge.Hopeyou’lljoinme!

Porsche is putting spring centre stage at the North American Auto Show 2012: The new 911 Carrera Cabriolet celebrates its world premiere in Detroit. This marks a doubling of the new 911 model range within a half year period by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart. Developed in tandem with the Coupé, the Cabriolet offers the same benefits in terms of sportiness, efficiency and comfort, complemented by an all-new hood and the driving fun of an open sports car.
WhattheCoupébeganwiththenewaluminium-steelbody,theCabrioletcontinueswiththeuniquehood:Asaresultthetypical911rooflineisinitiallyretainedinitsentirety;theCabrioletalsocutsafinefigurewhenclosedup.Intelligentlightweight,evenincludingtheuseofmagnesiuminthehood,enabledtheopen-top911saswelltoreversetheweightspiralandmakethenewCabriomodelssignificantlylighterthantheirpredecessors.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart’s purist Gran Turismo is leaving the pits: the Panamera GTS. The clue is in the name. At Porsche, GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport, promising extraordinary Porsche performance ever since the legendary 904 Carrera GTS back in 1963.
Morepowerandupgradedbrakes,abodyloweredbytenmillimetresandtheespeciallysportilytunedchassiswithairsuspensionandPASMarethemajortechnicalmodificationsthatmakeitthePanameramodelcapableofcuttingitontheracingcircuit–withoutsacrificingpracticality.ThesportiestofallPanamerasalsoconveysthistooccupantsandtheoutsideworldbyitsstrikingsound.Intermsoflooks,thenewPanameraGTSsignalsitsindependencebydistinctivedesignfeaturesinthefront-end,sideandrearareaaswellasblackhighlights.Theinterioraswellisrigorouslytailoredtothesportypersonalitywithsportsseats,SportDesignsteeringwheelwithshiftpaddlesandexclusiveGTSleatherinteriorwithAlcantarasurfaces.

In2011,Porschesoldmorevehiclesthantheyearbeforeinallsalesregions.Asiatakesthetopslotwith42,971unitsdelivered(+44.0%).TheChinesemarketpostedthebiggestgrowthwithplus64.6percent.Themostsuccessfulsinglemarketin2011wastheUSA:atotalof29,023customersintheUnitedStatesoptedforamodelfromPorsche(+14.6%).InthedomesticmarketGermanyaswellthe911,Cayenne,Panamera,BoxsterandCaymansportscarswereverypopular,selling14,959units(+13.2%).
TheZuffenhausencompanymodelmostindemandworldwidein2011wastheCayenne,ofwhich59,897werehandedovertocustomers.WithsalesoftheCayenneSandCayenneTurbototalling18,126units,Porschedefendeditsleadingpositioninthehigh-performance,off-roadvehiclesegment.In2011,theStuttgart-basedsportscarmanufacturerdeliveredjustunderonefifthmorevehiclesthantheyearbefore.

Itbegan18monthsagoinJuly,2010,whenIwasdoingonlineresearchaboutmycar.Itturnsoutthatitisanunusualmodelthat,accordingtosomerecordsandonline-forumopinions,shouldnotexist.Youcanreadthearticleifyouwanttogetintothedetails,butsufficeittosaythatwhileonerecordsaidtwoweremade,noonehadeverseenone.OneoftheskepticsonlinewasPeteZimmermann,renownedPorscheauthority,mechanicandauthorofTheUsed911Story.IstartedexchangingemailswithhimandtoldhimIthoughtImighthaveoneofthoseversions.IsaidIwouldsharewhateverpicturesorinformationhewantedaboutmycar,andhesentmealaundrylistofthingstocheck.WhenIsentinfoandphotos,hewouldrespondwithevenmoredetailedrequirements.Eventuallyhecametotheconclusionthatmycaractuallywasoneofthosetwoelusive1984TurboLook911Cabriolets.
Aftergoingthroughthisexercisein“car-cheology,”IaskedhimifhewouldbeinterestedincollaboratingonanarticleaboutthecarforPanoramaorExcellence.Hethoughtthatwasagoodidea,sowepreparedadraftinAugust,2010.HethencontactedtheeditoratExcellence,PeterStout.Zimmermannhadneverwrittenforthembefore,buthisreputationwaswell-knownandExcellencewasdefinitelyinterested.ItwasnowearlySeptember,2010.
Excellencelikedthearticle,butwantedsomechanges,whichweworkedonthroughOctober.Excellencealsoneededpicturestoaccompanythestory.Theysuggestedsomeoftheirregularphotographers,butIknewsomeonewhowasabeginnerprofessionalphotographerandIthoughtitwouldbeagoodchancetogivehimsomeexposure.WesentwhatIthoughtweregreatphotosshotaroundDublin.ThiswasinlateOctober.
