Preface

PREFACE

On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to welcome to all participants and speakers to the EurAsia Waste Management Symposium (EWMS) 2011. This Symposium is organized by Environmental Engineering Department of Yildiz Technical University.

Environmental Engineering Department of Yildiz Technical University organizes conferences biennially since 2007. The first two conferences were organized as

National Symposiums with the name “Waste Management in Turkey Symposium (TURKAY) ” in 2007 and 2009, respectively. The Symposium is organized as an international Symposium in 2011 which is the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Yildiz Technical University.

EurAsia Waste Management Symposium will provide a comprehensive overview of effective waste management strategies across the Asian and the European regions. Also, the symposium will provide the opportunity to discuss and evaluate the current and future regional waste management strategies and recycling projects. All parties of waste management such as universities, industrial organizations, public institutions and organizations, local governments and legislators are welcome to attend to the symposium in order to share their experiences and to bring a common body of knowledge for the solution of the waste management problems in the region. The topics of the symposium will include almost all areas of waste management including legislation, collection, transport, treatment, recycle and reuse options for municipal, hazardous, medical, and other waste types.

We received around 210 abstracts from more than 30 countries and 134 of them were accepted as oral and poster presentations after a review process by the scientific committee. Now, we have 5 keynote speakers, 74 oral presentations and 60 poster presentations.

It is my pleasure to thank to supporting organizations, Ministry of Forest and Water Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI), ISTAC J.S. Co., Istanbul Special Provincial Administration, International Waste Working Group (IWWG) and ISWA-Turkey (Turkish National Committee on Solid Waste). We have also 10 sponsor companies and I would like to thank to all sponsor companies attended to the Symposium. I would like to thank to all scientific committee members for their contribution during reviewing process of the papers.

I would also like to respectfully commemorate Prof. Dr. Ferruh ERTURK, Head of the Environmental Engineering Department, who died during the course of the Symposium.

Finally, I would like to thank to all organizing committee members of EurAsia Waste Management Symposium who made this Symposium successful.

I wish all participants to have a wonderful time in Istanbul and hope to see you again in Waste Management Symposium -2013.

Sincerely,

Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Sinan Bilgili Organizing Committee Chair Yildiz Technical University

Abstract

Bursa city is a big city in northwestern of Turkey, near Istanbul. Solid wastes of Bursa are landfilled in Hamitler Landfill Site since 1995 and will landfill by 2025. Landfill capacity is 80.3 hectares and 43 hectares were used. In this study, landfill gas was measured at sample points. Amount of production of landfill gas was predicted with an EPA model. As a result, it was determined that landfill gas is a suitable and sufficient for an energy conversion project for today.

Keywords: Bursa, energy conversion, Hamitler landfill site , landfill gas

1. INTRODUCTION

Bursa city is a big city in northwestern of Turkey, near Istanbul. Solid wastes of Bursa are landfilled in Hamitler Landfill Site since 1995. Hamitler Landfill Site is in northwestern of Bursa city 1.38 million tons of solid wastes are landfilled between 1995-1999 years in different areas in landfill site. Wastes are landfilled in X (3.7 hectares) and T (8.8 hectares) areas where in north of landfill. Amount of solid wastes landfilled is 408,000 and 971,000 tons. After 2000 years, wastes are landfilled in south of landfill. Amount of solid wastes landfilled is 4.7 million tons since 2000. Total of wastes landfilled is 6.3 million tons. Since 2000, the area is stored in the "Main Divide" is referred to as "2. Aşama" and "3 Aşama" in the form of two categories. “2. Aşama” is 18 hectares and “3. Aşama” is 12.5 hectares. This changed over the years has continued to storage areas. The location of the landfill site is shown on Figure 1, storage areas in landfill site are shown in Figure 2, amount of solid wastes landfilled by years is shown in Table 1, amount of solid wastes landfilled for all times is shown in Figure 3, type of solid wastes for winter 2008 is shown in Table 2 and general types of solid wastes of Bursa city is shown in Figure 4.

2. MEAS UREMENT OF LANDFILL GAS

There are 8 chimneys in 2. Aşama and 3. Aşama. Measurements were made with Geotec GA2000 Plus Gas Analyzer in july 2009. Measuring points are marked on the map in Figure 5. Photographs in Figure 6 are showing status of the chimneys. Measurement results are given in Table 4. According to the results, CH4 is %56-62 in new areas, H2S is 152 ppm, O2 is %0.5 and CO and H2 is trace concentrations.

3. GENERATION POTENTIAL OF LANDFILL GAS The amount of landfill gas formation changes depend on organic matter content of the waste and age of waste. Landfill gas starts formation at significant amounts between 1 and 3 years after landfilling. Peak gas production usually takes between 5 and 7 years. Gas production usually will be complete in 20 years. Very small amounts of landfill gas will be seen for 50 and more long years.

“Landfill Gas Emissions Model (LandGEM) Version 3.02” was used to gas production will be identified. For model, k=0,04/year, Lo=100 m3/ton values have been accepted.

Amount of landfill gas collected depend on adaption of rules of landfill. When performed rules of landfill, it can be collect between %60-85 of landfill gas (LFG). It usually is %75 but the degree of collection can be accepting %40 for Hamitler Landfill.

Production of landfill gas for X and T areas are shown in Figure 7 and Figure 8. Production of landfill gas for Hamitler is shown in Figure 9 and Figure 10.

4. CONCLUS ION Landfill site has potential criteria for using of LFG. Landfilling will continue by 2025. It can be make an energy conversion project from landfill gas. Landfill site has not got a suitable collection system. For this reason, it can be a problem that diffusion of LFG for residential of near the landfill site. Suitable precautions should be taken.

Considering the cost, should be considered the most efficient energy conversion technologies. Optimization can be tried for the mixed-energy groups. Cogeneration can be a good alternative.
