2015 HOMICIDE REPORT

January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015

All below information was received from the Consolidated Crime Analysis Database (CCAD), Crime Analysis Mapping System (CAMS), and the Los Angeles Police Department Homicide Report.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS OF HOMICIDE STATISTICS:

In 2015, the City of Los Angeles had 283 Homicides. As compared to 2014, City-wide 2015 homicides are up 8.8% (283 vs. 260). Operations-South Bureau experienced a decrease in homicides as compared to 2014. Operations-Central, Valley and West Bureaus experienced an increase in homicides as

compared to 2014.

As compared to 2013, City-wide 2015 homicides are up 12.7% (283 vs.251). All Bureaus, except Operations-South Bureau, experienced an increase in homicides as

compared to 2013.

GANG RELATED % 58.3% 61.5% 57.8% 2015 CITY-WIDE HIGHS AND LOWS FOR MONTH AND DAYS OF THE WEEK:

February (15 homicides) was the lowest month, accounting for 5.3% of the 2015 homicides. August (39 homicides) was highest month, accounting for 13.8% of the 2015 homicides. Tuesday (28 homicides) was the lowest day, accounting for 9.9% of the 2015 homicides. Sunday (51 homicides) was the highest day, accounting for 18.0% of the 2015 homicides.

HOMICIDE WEAPONS: The three weapons used most in City-wide homicides remained constant in 2015, 2014, and 2013.

1. Firearm was the weapon most used for 2015. 2015: 192 (67.8% of City-wide homicides) 2014: 185 (71.2% of City-wide homicides) 2013: 192 (76.5% of City-wide homicides)

2. Cutting instrument was the second most used for 2015. 2015: 34 (12.0% of City-wide homicides) 2014: 27 (10.4% of City-wide homicides) 2013: 31 (12.4% of City-wide homicides)

3. Bodily Force was the third most used for 2015.

2015: 24 (8.5% of City-wide homicides) 2014: 32 (12.3% of City-wide homicides) 2013: 14 (5.6% of City-wide homicides)

Note: The Department’s gun buyback program has taken 15,392 guns off the street since

the inception in 2009. 746 firearms in 2015* 1728 firearms in 2014 1989 firearms in 2013 *There was only one gun buyback conducted in 2015 versus two gun buybacks for 2014 and 2013.




HOMICIDE MOTIVES: The top three motives used in City-wide homicides remained constant in 2015, 2014, and 2013.

1. Gang Related: 2015: 165 (58.3% of City-wide homicides) 2014: 160 (61.5% of City-wide homicides) 2013: 145 (57.8% of City-wide homicides)

2. Dispute/Acquaintance:

HOMICIDE PREMISES: The top three premises where City-wide homicides occurred remained constant in 2015, 2014, and 2013.

1. Street/Parkway was the most in all three years. 2015: 99 (35.0% of City-wide homicides) 2014: 77 (29.6% of City-wide homicides) 2013: 93 (37.1% of City-wide homicides)

2. Sidewalk was second most in all three years.


3. Multi-Family Dwelling was third most in all three years.






HOMICIDE CITY-WIDE CLEARANCE RATE*:

* It should be noted that for the purposes of this Homicide Report, clearance rates are attributed to the 21 Geographic Areas regardless of which entity was the investigating unit, ie. Specialized Units.

2015: 64.7% 2014: 72.3% 2013: 67.0%

NOTE: Of the 183 cases cleared this year, 138 were homicides that occurred in 2015.

The most recently available (2013) national average for homicide clearance is 64.5%. SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS AND TRENDS: The top two homicide Victims in the past three years remained the same. Hispanics followed by Blacks.

1. Hispanic victims were the highest. 2015: 130 (46.0% of City-wide homicides) 2014: 119 (45.8% of City-wide homicides) 2013: 115 (45.8% of City-wide homicides)

2. Black victims were the second highest.

NOTABLE MULTIPLE INCIDENTS:

The City had one (1) triple homicide this year that occurred in Newton Division. The suspect is in custody and this investigation has been “Cleared by Arrest.”

There were seven (7) double homicides that occurred: (1) 77th Area (2) Foothill Area (1) Southeast Area (1) Newton Area (1) Hollenbeck Area (1) Olympic Area

MURDER/SUICIDE INCIDENTS:

The City experienced five (5) murder/suicide incidents in 2015. Two (2) incidents were related to Domestic Violence:
