Ph.D Thesis summary

The doctoral thesis is entitled “Synthesis and properties of spinel like Ferrites.”

Gamma Ferric Oxide which is a vacancy ordered spinel having the structure Fe3+

A[Fe3+

5/3

1/3]BO42-

is a widely used tape recording medium employed in video and audio tapes. Most

of the literature is patented and hence the exact route of synthesis is obscure. Gamma ferric was

prepared starting from synthetic geothite via the reaction route.

-FeOOH dehydration -Fe2O3 reduction Fe3O4 oxidation -Fe2O3

Acicular ferric oxide was prepared by decomposing ferrous oxalate dihydrate in an

atmosphere of nitrogen employing a complexing medium for the precipitation of acicular ferrous

oxalate crystals. Tape quality acicular ferric oxide was synthesized and characterised by experimental

techniques viz , DTA, TG, XRD, TEM / SEM. Hysteresis Loop Tracer , Initial Susceptibility

Measurements, Gas Chromatography and Mössbauer Spectroscopy Measurements . With a view to

improving the various magnetic properties of -Fe2O3 this was doped with dopants like Mg, Co, Cu ,

and Ni in the atomic percent range (1-16) and their properties were studied and characterised

employing various experimental techniques.

The mechanism of the formation of -Fe2O3 via the oxalate method was elucidated and the

role of dopants in improving the magnetic properties and stabilising the structure of ferric oxide was

established with the aid of Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements and lattice energy calculations.
