Our picturesque countryside is interspersed with individually unique villages and hamlets set amidst a stunning landscape

of rolling hills, deep valleys, and clear running streams. Weaving throughout is the historic Genesee River. Dense state and county forestlands and open fields beckon those who wish to experience the outdoors which highlights our spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife. Allegany County is nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. We have a relaxed, unhurried way of life with a full menu of seasonal activities including hunting and fishing, fairs, holiday celebrations, outdoor sports, and annual special interest events such as a Trout Derby, an Artisans’ Tour, a Hot Air Balloon Rally, County Fair, Heritage Days, a Garlic Festival and a Fall Ridgewalk and Run to name just a few. Accommodations for visitors include a wide range of choices from motels to bed and breakfasts, and from campgrounds to rental cabins. Large and small game hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking, back-packing, skiing, birding, photography, canoeing and swimming can all be enjoyed in our wonderful outdoors. For others, we have a full range of cultural activities, shopping, dining and sightseeing. Actually, we’re not just a single destination, but a variety of wonderful destinations for the entire family to enjoy. As you go through this guide, you will find all we have to offer listed by village. In some instances neighboring hamlets are included with those villages for your convience when travelling in those areas. Please refer to the map on the back cover to ensure that you take full advantage of those special little gems tucked away in our county. If you have any questions, feel free to visit discoveralleganycounty. com or contact the Office of Tourism at 800-836-1869.

Genesee Valley Greenway St. ParkThe Genesee Valley Greenway rolls through towns and countless landscapes from Rochester south to Cuba, New York, takes you through Allegany, Cattaraugus, Livingston, Monroe, and Wyoming counties. The 68.8 mile greenway is a multi-surface work in progress, but there is a long, continuous segment (37 miles) between Rochester and Sonyea that provides an off-road experience. As of spring 2012, 60+ disconnected miles of the trail are open to the public; several more are planned that will link the disconnected sections. For the latest trail information, visit Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway.

Trail end points: Tibbetts Hill Rd. (Black Creek) to Genesee St. at Vixette St., Genesee Valley Park (Rochester)

WAG TrailThe WAG Trail is a 9-mile multi-use recreational trail and historic transportation corridor in Allegany County, extending between the Village of Wellsville and the Pennsylvania state line. It follows the route of the former Wellsville, Addison and Galeton (WAG) Railroad along the upper Genesee River, which is where it gets its name.

The WAG Trail is open for all non-motorized uses, as well as snowmobiling in season. The trail is also popular with fishermen for access to the Genesee River.

Finger Lakes TrailThe Finger Lakes Trail system, over 950 miles in length, runs from the Pennsylvania-New York border in Allegany State Park to the Long Path in the Catskill Forest Preserve, with branch trails to Niagara Falls, the Genesee River valley, the Great Eastern Trail south of Corning, the central Finger Lakes, and the Syracuse region. From the PA border to the northeast end of the Onondaga Branch, the Finger Lakes Trail is also the North Country National Scenic Trail. This system is built and maintained almost entirely by volunteers. Covering some of the most scenic land in New York, we welcome you to hike it, and volunteer to keep it beautiful.
