Why was an ironworks built in Boxholm? Learn this and much more at the Ironworks Museum, Bruksmuseet. Drop in and learn more about the regions history from the 16th century on. See how the Swedish steel industry evolved.

And theres plenty more to see and experience here. You simply must try Boxholm cheese, enjoy the deep Smland woods, Lake Sommen and its natural setting.

Boxholm has plenty of opportunities for activity: golf, walking trails, swimming holes, canoeing, fishing and skiing on artificial snow, to name a few.

Just north of Boxholm, where the sbon River branches off from the Svartn, you have the picturesque sbodalen Valley. Plsbo ng is a traditional old farm landscape on the slope down to the sbon River. Its an unusually species-rich meadow and pastureland with tall birches. In the south-east is the Tuddebokllan Spring, an idyll written about by the poet Atterbom, who was born in Plsbo.

On the other side of Road 32 another small river, Lilln, branches off from the Svartn and rushes over the landscape. Next to these rapids is a veritable artists haven in the form of pottery and basket-making workshops in the idyllic little village of Linnefors.

And dont miss the towns of Malexander and Blvik on Lake Sommen south of the central community of Boxholm.

Discover Sweden from its very best side, in a classic church village. Though only a few hundred people live here, the villagers run a country store, a farm shop, a flea market, a gym and a downhill ski slope all with excellent service. If Andrew Peterson, the emigrant on whose journals Vilhelm Moberg based his Emigrants series of novels, had known what would happen in the future, he might have stayed in this idyll. Now his life is the stuff of an exhibition at the Emigrant Museum, next to the School Museum and the newly restored Hedners Park. Take the kids to the nature playground, or see how many people need to join hands to get their arms around Swedens oldest known spruce tree.

How about a picnic and a swim? Pick up what you need at the country store and head a few kilometres north to Asby Sand in Lake Sommen. There are several excellent walking trails around the village. Thanks to close collaboration between clubs, churches and the country store, you can also enjoy markets and summer evenings in the village.

Watch the lively boat activity in the visitors marina. Visit Naturum Sommen or test your nerves on the high-altitude course. If you take the car ferry across to the mainland, you can make a pit stop in Blvik to browse elegant creations in silver and unique home deco items, then pass through nearly untouched wilderness before returning to civilization.

If you follow the Torpaslingan Route south, the winding roads and breath-taking look-out points at Bodaberget and Holksa offer amazing views of the Swedish countryside and you simply cant miss stopping for ice cream at Stebbarp.

If youre a culture buff, dont miss a stop at the Rs Kvarn mill or Torpa Church Village, which dates back to the 13th century. Continue on to the Brostorp cheesecake bakery for a genuine Smland snack, and also sample and buy delicious cheeses.

The VtternSommenleden cycling route goes across Torpn and is marked with red signs. The walking trail is nearly 30 km long and takes you around the whole island. Spend the night at the campsite at the ferry station or at the newly renovated Solviken hostel.

    A nostalgic journey

Southern sunden out among the islands on your own. Why not visit the spectacular stone ship at Gumhem? The campsite is always open, as is the visitors marina.

sunden is known for its excellent fishing, so you cant go wrong with a guided fishing tour. Hunting trips can also be arranged according to season.

Bjrkfors The little village of Bjrkfors is hardly more than a crossroads but it has a lot to offer. Apart from the annual open-air market Bjrkfors Marken, always the Saturday before Midsummer and the rockabilly festival at Nostalgimacken in July, theres always live music on Sundays at the Val Summer Caf. Sometimes theres dancing, too.

The village boasts a rich cultural life, with art galleries, courses and active artists who welcome you into their studios.

If you feel like paddling, the intersection of Lakes Bjrken and sunden is the perfect spot. You can rent a kayak for a day from Bjrkfors Kajak & Hostel, or a canoe from Hornbergs Camping. Ryda Grd has boats to rent for fishing or just chilling on Lake sunden.

HornCome on the second Saturday in July and youll find the otherwise peaceful gem that is sunden, bubbling with the Horn Market. On Wednesday evenings youll be joined by hundreds of classic cars. On the third Wednesday in July the village rocks to rockabilly music and 1950s nostalgia.

At other times of the year, the lake and beautiful natural setting are what draw people to this idyllic community where the Kinda Canal flows into Lake sunden. Rent a canoe for the day and head

KisaEmigrant history, crafts and wilderness life Imagine swimming in a different lake every day! The municipality of Kinda has more than 400 of them. Combine that with the Kinda Canal, the Stngn River and its lake system, and youve got an amazing adventure world for fishing, canoeing and boating.

    Kisa is the central town.

The great wave of emigration to North America started here in 1845. An exciting history that you can delve into at the Kisa Emigrant Museum, perhaps after taking in a cup of coffee and a snack at the Caf Columbia in the same building.

To see what life was like for those who stayed, visit the Hembygdsgrden or Kisa Square preferably on a Friday, which is market day. This is the home market of the HargOdlarna growers, whose farm shop and caf a few kilometres north of the town is open the whole summer season.

If youre an aficionado of beautiful things, Hjortslunds Keramik and the delsmedjan goldsmith shop will be right up your alley.

In the mood for activity? Then get ready for a day of adventure! Visit, for example, Lake Fllingen, where you can swim, golf, fish or rent a bike, electric moped, canoe or kayak for a day. You can even rent scuba gear. If youre having too much fun to go home, you can spend the night at the Fllingen Hotel and ask them to put together an experience package for you.

In winter, stergtlands biggest ski lift system, Tolvmannabacken, is the place to go. If youre looking for more relaxing activities, try roaming through our crafts shops, farm shops and other stores.

Make your way through the canals locks. Cruise or paddle on some of Swedens most beautiful lakes. Ramble or cycle through northern Europes biggest oak woodland. The Rimforsa region has a plethora of natural assets. In wintertime, you can hunt, go ice fishing or try out ice touring with or without a guide. You can rent the equipment on site.

Youll also find plenty of culinary experiences both in and outside the central community. Keep an eye out for the stgtamat sign, which is a promise of local delicacies such as Kinda pickles, Smland cheesecake and beestings pudding. Farm shops and cafs as well as fancier restaurants all focus on regional cuisine.

On the shore of Norra sunden lies the Hallstad ngar Nature Reserve, a unique meadow with lobbed lime trees and rich floral beauty, as well as a great diversity of herbs and grasses.

To the west are the Trollegater Caves, one of Swedens biggest interconnected cave systems (140 m). If youd like to be guided around the triangular labyrinth, guides are available year-round.

Continue along the winding roads into the wilderness and you end up in Ulrika, a charming village whose wooden-shingled church and the adventure land at Amundebo Sdergrd Farm are well worth a stop. Not to mention the Ulrika Market on the second Thursday in September! The Oak Woodland east of sunden boasts impressive erratic blocks giant boulders deposited here by the receding Ice Age glacier. We warmly recommend a visit to the 13th-century church ruins at Hgerstad.

Visit a furriers studio or a fish smokery, or go on an enchanting boat ride. Road 133 between Trans and Grnna features several nostalgic gems. Just look at the Bjrkens Cykel- och Mopedmuseum, packed with all sorts of old two-wheelers, or the Gripenberg Moped Rally, where you can watch the tried-and-true machines at work.

If youre inspired by pedalling through the summer landscape, drop in and rent a bike at Hemma p Hult, which can also suggest routes for you, serve breakfast and pack you a picnic basket. Caravan and motorhome pitches are also available.

If youre drawn to the water, you can rent a boat or canoe for the day (or two) at BauerGrden on Lake Bunn. Also a great place to have a superb meal and spend the night.

Or perhaps youd like to hike a part of the 59-kilometre Holavedsleden Trail between Trans and Grnna, either on your own or in the company of guides from Hemma p Hult.

And dont miss this peaceful oasis: Uppgrenna Naturhus, which opened for business in 2015, boasts an amazing lemon grove and a breathtaking view of Lake Vttern.

No matter how you decide to travel, you can immerse yourself in biodiversity, from picturesque, moss-edged riding trails in enchanted forests straight out of a fairytale, to sunny hay meadows surrounded by charming old wooden fences along winding motorcycle roads.

Not to mention the glittering string of lakes all along the Cultural Road. Lake Bunn is a slice of Swedish countryside at its best, and its part of a system of six lakes in a glorious natural setting. The lakes are also excellent for sport fishing especially for pike, perch and zander. Why not book a guided fishing tour with Fishing-in-Sweden.com and turn your trip into an unforgettable fishing adventure!

TransSwedens best small-town shoppingWith a lively open-air market on Fridays, marching-band parades on Saturdays and classic-car cruising in late summer, Trans is a true small-town idyll. In summer the irresistible little shops in its city centre compete with the popular Httebadet beach area as visitors favourite place.

One of the top attractions is the wood-burning paddle steamer the S/S Boxholm II, from which you can feast your eyes on Transs most important natural resource, Lake Sommen.

Rent a kayak or boat for a day at Htte and you can seek out your very own bathing rock in the island-rich lake. If you purchase a fishing license at the same time, you can catch your own dinner of pike or Sommen char.

If youre more of a landlubber, you can go on a foot tour of the city or follow winding walking trails along the Svartn Rivers path through the city centre.

Transs Golden Age as a hub of the fur industry is now firmly relegated to the annals of history, but the fur museum Plsmuseet describes its rich history. This and the open-air museums Gammelbyn Hultet and Hembygdsparken are among the most popular excursions. But the little ones are probably more interested in the skate park and climbing silo, or the childrens theatre production of Kapten Nemmos Pirates at Kraftverket.

In addition to this, Trans has excellent walking and cycling trails, which will take you all the way from the Illern Nature Reserve to Lake Vttern if you dont step on the brake.
