48 Indian Gaming September 2006 T his month Indian Gaming magazine traveled to the recently opened Riverwind Casino in Norman, Okla- homa, located about 30 minutes from Oklahoma City. Owned and operated by the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, Riverwind Casino offers numerous gaming options, a high-tech theatre, and lots of dining options. With 219,000 sq. ft. of gaming and event floor space and situated on 15.5 acres, Riverwind is the largest and one of the most exciting casino properties in the state. Before our tour began, we learned some of the history of the Chickasaw Nation. The Chickasaw people were one of the last tribes to move to Indian Territory during the “Great Removal,” traveling on the “Trail of Tears.” The Chickasaws suffered hardships after the Civil War, but regained prosperity and built some of the first schools, banks, and businesses in Indian Territory. After Oklahoma statehood in 1907, the President of the United States appointed the principal officers of the Chickasaw Nation. In 1970, legislation was enacted allowing the Chickasaw Nation to elect its own principal officers. Upon our arrival at Riverwind we met with Bill Anoatubby, Governor of the Chickasaw Nation, who gave us an overview of the tribe's economic growth. When Anoatubby was first elected governor in 1987, the Chick- asaw Nation employed 250 people and had an $11 million budget. Today the Chickasaw Nation employs more than 9,000 and operates on a $350 million budget. “Striving to accomplish our primary mission ‘to enhance the overall qual- ity of life of Chickasaw citizens’ has the welcomed ripple effect of enhancing the quality of life of all Oklahomans,” said Governor Anoatubby, referring to the growth in employment and economic opportunities in the region. Next we met with Brian Campbell, CEO of Chickasaw Enterprises, which oversees the operation of all the tribe's businesses. He explained that the tribe currently owns 18 casinos, of which Riverwind is the newest and largest. “This casino was designed and built in just eleven months from the time it was approved,” Campbell said. “Fortunately I have a tremendous team that worked on this project, from the architects to the contractors. They made all of this all come together.” Designed by The Hnedak Bobo Group of Las Vegas and Memphis, the property represents a new wave of casino design that focuses more on abstract ideas rather than concrete themes. Riverwind stands as an architectural testament to the native prairies of the state, inspired by the South Canadian River on the northern border of the Chickasaw Nation and Oklahoma's prairie wind. The architectural swoops found at the building's entrance represent the bend of prairie grass and the sapphire blue facades stretch out to capture the energetic environment without overpowering the native prairie fields. Because of its proximity to the freeway, the designers used kinetic lighting that gives the building a different look both day and night and also emulates the energy inside the casino. The lights on the outside of the building also mimic the motion of cars as they travel along the interstate. Additionally, the property boasts an 85-ft. pylon with a beacon and video screen to entice drivers to visit the casino.
